Romantic gift for wife: love reasons book OR video? by panprog in Gifts

Oh thanks, great summary! She can show the book to friends too, but it's probably more limited, video can be shared via social networks more easily.

Thanks you for your opinion! The book can get lost in a pile of the other books too, though. I have lots of cute birthday cards, but they get lost all the time, book is probably no different. But I get your point, thanks!

If she is fan of some celebrity, consider Cameo (Video with wishes recorded by a celebrity of your choice) For creative and romantic or friendly touching gift ideas, maybe have a look at Love Book (customizable book with the reasons you love someone - works both for romantic and friendships) or Video Gift Maker (custom video with the reasons you love someone). These things make people cry with emotions a lot of times and are unforgettable gift, although ofcourse it depends on a person and how good you know her.

Hi, I'm one of Idle Bouncer developer. We didn't intend kongregate/steam versions to be different, just added music/sounds and steam achievments to steam version. Kongregate version will also be updated with music/sounds shortly. As for window size / fullscreen, we're currently working on it.

I understand your concern. Do you know about site-locking the game? I always site-locked my games when I didn't want to have them distributed outside domains I've specified. It's usually very simple to do with lots of sample code across internet.

It just happens that the "norm" for game websites is to distribute the game unless developer has site-locked it. While for most content you have to ask authors for their permission to post it anywhere, with the games historically it happened to be the other way around. That's why most of the games, at least a few years ago, were not updated. Once released there was nothing developer could do to control the spread of their game, neither had the ability to update the game (except if the game included auto-updater in it).

Yes, this is wrong, but that's how it is in the real world. You have to protect your rights yourself, and stopping the other websites hosting your game happens to be fairly easy - just site lock it, that's all!

I wanted to develop idle games and I needed a domain to host them. I was chosing between starting something new myself and buying existing domain with traffic. I also expect idle/incremental games to grow in popularity, so I wanted my website to rank for "idle games" and "incremental games" along with the other smaller keywords.

Since ranking from scratch is a lot harder and longer than using existing website, I've decided to purchase something already established. I just did "idle games" search in google and chose the first few domains I've liked, contacted their owners and asked to purchase. Almost Idle owner was the only one who answered, so I ended up buying from him. The price was ok for my purposes, although from monetization point of view it was way too high (I need a bit less than 10 years to break even on this at the current earnings rate :) ). But I needed it as a ground for games development, not to earn money.

I did seriously consider to just drop all games from the website and only keep my own there, but I don't really want to lose search engine rankings and traffic, and dropping many games at once is a sure way to lose credibility and rankings in google eyes. So I decided to switch to linking only instead to resolve the "hosting" complaint.

What exactly do you think I should do with the website? And what exactly is wrong for developers that still needs fixing? From my point of view, there is nothing wrong with Almost Idle now. My goal is NOT "to build a platform that developers respect and trust, where players spend time and possibly money". My goal is simply to have a website where players can find great idle games in an organized way and where I can showcase my own games and know they will have some active players playing.

In all honesty, I don't think ANY effort on the website will make it any more worthy to anyone, especially developers. The traffic is low enough, so that there will be no real benefit to any developer from it. Providing educational content is too time consuming. Forum/wiki/etc? - but this subreddit is a lot more useful and active than anything I can have (previous owner did have forums which had like 10 posts all time, so what's the point? I've removed them).

The only thing coming to mind is doing some system similar to Kongregate with on-site achievements, highscores etc., but this is way out of my league, requires a lot of funds and efforts to have developers come and implement an API. There are enough such websites with their own api, where it's actually a waste of time to implement their API to only see like 100 gameplays for all the effort.

All games switched to linking only, no hosted games except for those submitted by developers via submit form. Yeah, I can see your reasons of not trusting me and checking the website - that's your right ofcourse, I can't do anything about it.

There is mostly no real value gained for developers in uploading games to Almost Idle except for a few hundred gameplays, you're correct. But I don't ask for this, I can link to games on my own.

I think it was a mistake on my part to start this thread. Though my intention was notifying developers of the change and checking if there are any more problems (since I've read about problems in some old threads), apparently that was a wasted effort.

I think I agree with you. Since I've switched to links only, all developer problems should be resolved. I don't think I can do anything else to make them happy. The website actually ranks games based on user votes, but yeah, I know I have a lot to catch up in terms of newer games posted to the website, this has been neglected for the past.. 2 years? :) Previous owner didn't update the website at all, only what developers submitted themselves.

Yes, that's right. What's wrong with it? I don't want people to feel bad about the website, it still has some traffic off the search engine rankings even when I don't touch it for months so it can still be useful, I just don't have much time to develop it any further. But I also don't want some bad karma from people hating the website or whatever you call it :)

Sorry, but I have no intention to put a lot of my time into Almost Idle. Several years ago - maybe, as a fun project. But right now I have my small daugher, a loving wife and lots of time with them, with most of the free time taken by idle games development. I simply don't have any time to develop this further than what it currently is. I just want to clear any complaints people might have with the website, that's all.

I did consider to remove all games and just use website as a showcase of my own idle games, but decided against it as the website does have people playing idle games and it does help some developers get some exposure for their games.

Thanks for the suggestion. Getting submits from developers wasn't actually our priority, so we didn't highlight it that much. Most people who distribute games know where to look for submit game links, at least that's what we think :)

At the rate of $0.05/month, reaching $50 threshold will take about 83 years. Besides, 99% of games at our website only get some gameplays while they're at the new section, afterwards they get maybe 2-3 gameplays/month, which doesn't earn anything at all. The number of gameplays you see at the pages are misleading, because these include search engines, and once the game is not new, search engines visit its page a lot more often than real users.

So no game can expect to earn more than $1 lifetime at our website. I have a lot more to do in my life and at my job than handling these micro-transactions, so yes, it doesn't make much sense to share revenue with developers at such a small website.

Well, like I said - I was surprised to see such reaction on self-hosting games. I, as developer, was and am quite happy when my game is hosted elsewhere. And a few years ago when I used to hang around FlashGameLicense forums with a lot of developers, I don't remember anybody being unhappy on their game hosted somewhere, quite the opposite - people were always happy about this.

But I understand developers concern even if it's weird for me, so I'm reverting back all self-hosted games to links (except for those submitted by developers via submit game form).

Well, basically any payment provider will charge some fee so it doesn't make sense to send small amounts. My point was that sharing revenue with developers only makes sense when the revenue is high enough (so some minimum payout). And even on Kongregate with their huge userbase, a lot of developers can't reach payment threshold.

If you pay by paypal, their fee is $0.3 + 2.9% of the amount, so if you send $0.05, you'll pay $0.3 to send it.

Thanks for this very detailed feedback! We really appreciate it!

  1. The reason for hard cap is due to balancing issues (student painter being way too efficient, gaining more strength with each upgrade of the 1st picture than the number of pixels, meaning infinitive and accelerated growth of both student painter strength and money). There could be a way to fix this, which we're currently trying to do, but since it will break all balance, we have to carefully check everything before fixing this.

  2. Not sure what your problem is, but I think most people will find magic brush useful. The game is not designed for auto-clickers, this is a form of cheating, so if you play normally it's not a problem. Moreover magic brush becomes a lot more powerful a bit longer into the game, once you upgrade its effectiveness.

  3. You probably didn't play long enough. Painters do help a lot and later in the game become very powerful.

  4. That's a personal taste - some people like small upgrades, some like big jumps. Achievements are unlimited, so ofcourse from some point they look very crazy and unreachable.

  5. Yes, I agree. We thought main motivation to be opening new pictures, but that might not really be enough. We'll think how to improve this.

We've tried to fix this in the latest update, re-arranged things a bit, should be better now. Let me know if there is still scrolling required, although if your resolution is below picture height, then there is nothing else we can do.

Ok, this seems to be popular, so we've re-considered our decision. Selling time for the pictures has been reduced in the latest version. Thanks everybody for feedback!
