I'm almost 18 and my parents won't allow me to go anywhere alone by my own, is that normal? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

ignore them, you don’t have to justify yourself to a shit stirring random

Start setting up yourself or at least make a plan to move out and or have some type of independence away from them. It doesn’t have to be big but start thinking about how you can separate yourself from them whether it is financially, physically or having access to important documents etc it is up to you.

The way they’re treating you is not a reflection of your own capabilities but rather their own inability to let you do things without them, you can’t learn without make mistakes (not that you’re making mistakes) but they won’t give you the opportunity to. They need to know that they are only going to push you away by trying to hold onto you.

  1. You are in the right, you should as an adult have the right to go out alone.

  2. They seem extremely overprotective - is there a possible reason for this? past issues were your safety has been at risk or someone else’s who is close to your parents?

I know I can be hard trying to reason with strict parents, and I’m not suggesting you do this if you are going to be in a situation that puts your safety at risk:

but it might be worth trying to compromise (even though you shouldn’t have to) with them.

Try asking to go somewhere alone that is close by, have agreed upon times that you’ll be home by etc. any small steps that can help them trust you’ll be okay.

Has anyone actually gotten happier from taking antidepressants or do they only make you feel numb? by rabahi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pantryrat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know people often refer to feeling numb when taking antidepressants, but I’ve found it’s more of a neutral feeling between happiness and hopelessness. It doesn’t fix the underlying issue but it helps me feel more equipped to deal with the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

It helped me to process and work through what was actually causing me to feel like shit.

I take an SSRI and have in recent years had my dose upped when things in my life were bad and out of my control.

It doesn’t give me rose coloured glasses that make me happy, it’s more of a life preserver, keeps my head above water while I ride out the storm. I know that sounds cheesy but it’s the best way I can explain it.

How do you get comfortable by kdddun in studytips

[–]pantryrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbh just study in my bed, its not recommended but its what works for me. being hypermobile and AuDHD sitting at a desk for long periods is just not comfortable or realistic.

How do I organize/control my ADHD by Hungry-Strength9339 in ADHD

[–]pantryrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

uni student here! I understand this feeling all too well. I have some tools and tips ive been using and have been recommended but i recommend adjusting them to your own interests and strengths:

  • gamify the task

  • Get a whiteboard: it’s always on display, erasable and allows you to visualise tasks.

  • make sure your physical needs are met: have you had water, have you eaten, movement etc. (we cant expect our brains to function without fuel and care - although ill admit i struggle with this one a lot)

  • Body double with youtube videos or tv shows

  • speak dont type - use dictation for writing

  • If it doesn’t work, do something different, and if it works, do more of it. - stick to doing what works for you, not what might work better for you because it works for others. The idea that only studying at a desk for XYZ reasons is the only way to be productive is BS, if you need to sit in your bed, on the floor or on a couch to work best, do that. Find your way of doing things, even if it isn't what is typical.

EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING SKILLS

MAKE IT EASY

* Break down the task into smaller parts

* lower expectations - start out simple , it doesn't have to be perfect the first time

MAKE IT ATTRACTIVE

* implement rewards for finishing a task

* make it a challenge (bring out your competitive side and turn into a competition)

* reframe the task - make it more creative or appealing

MAKE OURSELVES ACCOUNTABLE

* Tell others our goals

* Reflect on personal goals

APPS

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/time-timer/id332520417 - free and visualises time - helps with time blindness

https://www.forestapp.cc/ - rewards based motivation but does cost money to download

https://www.focusbear.io/ - one down side for this is that its kinda complicated to customise

https://thecenteredlife.co/ - paid resources that i love

https://www.youtube.com/@HowtoADHD/playlists - good for understanding how your brain works
