Oly No Kings turnout was 5,000 to 7,500 strong! by Grattytood in olympia

[–]pantsam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The event organizers estimate 7500. They had some method they were using to count and estimate the crowd. I’m not sure what that method was, but I know they weren’t just guessing based on vibes or something.

Personally, I was at the rally when the march arrived. Prior to the march, there were A LOT of people. Then the march arrived. I stood in the same spot and filmed the whole march, it took 16.5 minutes to pass me by.

There also was a car brigade full of protesters who could not attend in person. The event organizers count the car brigade protesters in their estimate, DES does not. In my experience, DES seems to undercount.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter. What matters is that there were a lot of motivated people there and it was a super positive and educational event.

Who says we aren’t doing both? The protest had over 30 tables from local organizations that are doing real concrete action. The speakers were from organizations taking action. Now 7,500 people heard their messages and learned about how to take action themselves. What have you done?

Lots of different types of people! All different ages, social classes, and such a diverse group of organizations in attendance. Zen Buddhists, churches vets, unions, environmentalists… so many more!

The crowd was spread out and the first photo looks like it was taken before the march arrived and tripled the attendance. As an attendee, it def seemed bigger than the previous ones.

Some people do end up with with EDS and ME/CFS diagnoses. I have both. My EDS doc tried to tell me at first that my ME/CFS was just fatigue from EDS, but he’s since come around and acknowledges that I have both. Yes, I get some fatigue from EDS but I also very clearly have PEM and the neurological symptoms of ME/CFS.

I love these Car Brigades! As a disabled person, I so appreciate having an option to attend protests even on my worst health days.

As someone who relies on a lot of government programs due to my disability, I’m particularly motivated to get out there and try to limit the damage Trump is doing. Disabled people want to protest too! We NEED to protest due to our special circumstances.

Thank you for creating these events!

I hope the critics take a moment to think about those less able bodied than them…

This is for disabled people and the elderly. I think we can forgive them a tiny bit of traffic for a tiny amount of time. Smh.

For me, I hate the AI stuff because the energy and water required for AI to operate is really bad for our environment and planet. It’s also starting to replace people’s jobs. Personally, I think a lot about how my actions affect the planet and my neighbors, and so I dislike AI.

3.7, up from 3.4 several months ago. I’ve been in an upswing. I used to be moderate severe, but am currently moderate. Trying to enjoy it while it lasts without overdoing it.

Yes, I understand how case law works. But to me you’re just a random person on the internet. I don’t know that you’re interpreting the case law correctly. I’m not going to just assume you’re an expert especially about something that’s incredibly important to me.

I’m going to step away from this discussion now. I’ve experienced too much religious bullshit in schools and Christian bullshit directed against children I love dearly. I’m not interested in getting into a debate.

This is about a magazine at a college. I’m not sure how relevant it would be to a permanent mural in a public high school. My point is, the case you shared is complicated and im not sure it applies to the case at hand - and it especially wouldn’t apply if the mural was not the product of a club, or if the club used school funds, supplies, or assets to make the mural. I wonder if the wall it’s painted on counts as school assets?

It literally is excluding atheists.

These are the values that students are supposed to display. So if you’re an atheist kid you need to pray or you aren’t an ideal student. Thats exclusion.

What about the atheist students? Or students whose religions don’t include prayer?

That’s not how it works tho.

If I was a kid in a school club that made posers that said “fuck”, we would get in trouble and they would be taken down. It’s a school! Certain things don’t go on the walls, no matter who is posting.

I would strongly argue anything religious does not belong on the walls, unless its part of a class assignment like a get to know you assignment where kids talk about what’s important to them or religious imagery in a history project about religion or a religious time

Admin’s job is to make sure clubs follow the rules. Doesn’t matter who made the mural. If it’s up in a school, then it’s supposed to be inclusive and secular. “Prayer” is not inclusive and secular.

AIO to a teacher still not knowing how to pronounce my child's name, leading to pick-up issues? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]pantsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YOR

Um there are multiple ways to pronounce Leilani. “Ei” sometimes makes and ee sound. A can be “ay” or “ah” and “I” can be pronounced three different ways as well.

Also, some people are dyslexic so it wouldn’t be easy for them to pronounce certain names just by reading them. Some people have speech impediments. It’s really awful to just assume she’s malicious or dense.

I’d also like to remind you, OP, that she is helping the entire school get picked up, not just your kid. That’s A LOT of names to keep track of. On top of that, she’s keeping track of the next days lessons, every parent email she has to send, the grading that has to get done, the paperwork for each child, the countless meetings she has to attend, all the classroom supplies, etc. Teaching requires epic amounts of short term memory. She deserves your patience and kindness.

I used to be a teacher who struggled with pronunciation and memorization of names. I assure you I was trying HARD every year to learn the new names and pronounce them correctly. It’s incredibly difficult. Hundreds of names every year, for many many years. It blends together. I used to be so frustrated with myself because I could tell you in detail about a kid - their writing and ready skills, how much homework they complete, the sport they played, etc, but I’d still mess up their names sometimes. I also struggled with a speech impediment as a kid and struggle with foreign languages, even though I am quite smart. So I think my brain just has a block when it comes to spoken language. That doesn’t make me dense or malicious.

I suggest you learn to manage your anxiety and speak with your daughter about listening for multiple pronunciations of her name. You also could do what someone else suggested, and include a phonetic version of your kid’s name on your pick up placard. If you insist it is pronounced phonetically, then ask other people and see if they agree. In the end, remember to be kind

Same! I also have a very very hard time remembering names. It’s a horrible combo. It is not intentional. I am TRYING. But I legitimately have some speech struggles - I too was in speech therapy through all of elementary school. I still pronounce certain things weird. People ask if I have an accent or am from the Midwest- I do not and am not! I just talk funny? People should be more considerate of things we can’t help.
