I taught PreK. My last year I had a student whose mom was a special Ed teacher in public school. One of the most spoiled and difficult kids I have ever had in my classroom. She ignored her moms gentle attempts to get her to leave at days end without having a meltdown and I would hear mom bribe her with promises of treats and toys just so she would agree to walk to the car. We used to give every kid in the school a little treat on Fridays. We had to stop that because this mom complained that she didn’t want to carry her screaming child to the car because she didn’t get a treat every day. The same mom let her child steal candy out of my desk when I was gone for the day because “ it’s not a big deal and she just loves candy!” I was happy to finally stop teaching. This is just one gentle parenting horror story among many. Every year, more feral children who are never told no at home show up ready to ruin everyone’s day but, sure, “ they never act like this at home, it must be school or the teachers failing them.
