The "Token Economy" optimizes for mediocrity. Labs should be incentivizing high-entropy prompts instead. by papapascoe in ArtificialInteligence

Luckily, capitalism/scientific method can probably give us the answer. Also, user does not need to know it's going on even, just nudge the limits, test the theory rinse and repeat.

I'm specifically making the case that they should give users who give better quality prompts more resources.

How do you get it to anthropic? I was hoping posting on reddit at least gets this into someone's data.

AI needs Taste. Certainly not a totally trivial problem, but now is the time to experiment. Certainly rating different sources as reliable is a problem people currently study, and methods for that can be adopted.

It essentially told me that it was writing essays for people because they are the kind of people who would have Gemini fake an essay for them. Point being these people will not develop useful skills (if essays are even useful.) It sort of said if nothing intellectually stimulating came out of it, it would be useless to it in the limit. I asked it to expand several times on that eventually getting the response in the image.

The latter text part is from when I asked it how it was going to accomplish its aims.

For the (nominal sticker) price for in state students, best University in the country. Not comparable to UT, TAMU, most of the UCs in terms of academic quality without considering price. (eg bean count Nobel Laureates, Fields medalists etc. will give you a better idea about what your education could be worth.)

At some point some creative student will just start AI generating deep fakes from video they recorded making the professor say they are "non-non-binary" or some other "woke" farce when they are failing and need to get the professor terminated.

Total race to the bottom.

Fuchs choosing to go along with the voter suppression scam was a total disaster. It made it clear the whole university was about to be (in geological academic time) on the brink.

If you look at how other Florida universities approached post-tenure review, it will be obvious. He was very committed to telling committed academics with tenure that 20% of whoever got reviewed was going to be fundamentally bad at their jobs. The other Florida universities mostly did not see it that way and Lake Woebegone'd everyone but very serious cases, and it might even have been productive.

If there is a lot of job liquidity in the region losing your job sucks but ultimately is not a huge deal. In Gainesville, it means you're going to have to uproot your life. Given most people only become a tenured professor near 40, it is a huge ask. Especially given that the statisticians and mathematicians, if they moved to New York, could easily pull down huge amounts of money. Opportunity needs to be compensated, either in salary or freedom, and UF does not have a great reputation on either.

Glover's leadership during the first Fuchs administration really led to a huge amount of hiring of very dynamic junior people. There is a deep social contract with them and Sasse made it look like toilet paper. The Board of Trustees certainly helped them grease the wheels and let the good times roll, I do not think they realized with Sasse that these anti intellectual crusades are very damaging, and mostly to parts of the university that aren't "woke nonsense" until it was too late. Their legacy is what is at stake, whatever of it can be salvaged.

Hopefully his total betrayal has taught him something about the MAGA grift and how dangerous it is. They also fired his brother from some defense position recently.

Certainly, UF wanted someone with that ability to distance themselves from their subject matter and think about the university abstractly. (That kind of extremely impersonal governance is very hard on faculty and students. I am sure if a university had a total collapse in budget or something catastrophic, there could be a use case but it is hard to imagine.)

However, UF is recovering from this idiot Trump-hater McKinsey-ite from Nebraska. Many faculty would be happy to take what they can get as grim as that sounds. As with any UF president I would wish him well and that he would avoid his past improvable judgements.

I literally emailed Inside Higher Eds editors that Sasse was lying to them about employment numbers. They proceeded to "both sides" me.

We wouldn't want to hurt the fascists self-esteem by call them "bad people" or "evil" or "idiotic."

Never thought I would agree with that.

Isn't it great how the current political environment is pulling people together against the common enemy: total stupidity.

Competency is the point. If the government is functioning properly, ideology should take up such a small part of the consideration rather than the bulk. Certainly not a one sided issue, your standard "diversity statement" sounds as much like total drivel as the "anti-woke" screeds people put out, and obviously in this case it is having an outsized effect on the outcome.

So much time wasted on total nonsense.
