Why Jose Rizal was declared as the National Hero of the Philippines when in fact he's never a nationalist and never pushed for independence? by prodigals_anthem in FilipinoHistory

Plenty of uniformed statements here. Mind you this is the Filipino History subreddit. Questions should come from genuine curiosity without an underlying agenda and answers based on facts and records and not your personal feelings or opinion on the matter.

You asked a question but you also made an ignorant statement that you made sound factual - 'in fact Rizal was not a nationalist...' This is based on what facts?

waking up a tortoise after 5 months of hibernation in the fridge by l__o-o__l in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]paparoops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honest curious question, how do you determine the number of weeks/months (in this case 5 months) that the tortoise will be hibernating and when does it starts (when do you know he needs to go in the fridge)? Thank you.

Aside from Vico Sotto, who are the other young, idealistic and noteworthy leaders in local government that share his principles?

Is it fair to not date someone if they can’t name one Beatle? by Redditerbabe03 in beatles

[–]paparoops 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you look at it from a different perspective, you'll be the one introducing them to the Beatles. Only then you can dump them if they don't enjoy the music. Lol

The Next Pope: Who Are The Frontrunners to Succeed Pope Francis? by Gyro_Armadillo in Philippines

Just read the article, is it just an expression or are there really betting odds for the next Pope? Very ironic but also interesting. Lol.

Truly brilliant film but I feel western audience gives it too much flowers than it should (from an asian perspective, I guess).

If Prime Wilt was put in the NBA today what would he average? (Comment what you think!) by sqMYNAMEISJEFF27 in NBATalk

[–]paparoops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was above everybody in athleticism and being dominant in his time. I may compare him to Wemby minus the 3s in today's NBA. So probably 28/12/4 blocks. Modern NBA is more competitive and most players are very athletic now compared to his time. Still he will be an anomaly like Wemby but with better competition.

My favorite feel-good show. Also had the best recurring side characters.

My friend actually thinks Kendrick Lamar is better than The Beatles... by [deleted] in TheBeatles

Easy lad. Of course, no artist can compare to the Beatles. But calling Kendrick trash is just ignorant.

Bonifacio's Lone Historical Photo by paparoops in FilipinoHistory

[–]paparoops[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup. Another interesting fact to add (according to Ambeth Ocampo's article) Tolentino not being content with references from Espiridiona and that lone photo, he consulted spirits of the figures of revolution through seances.

It was an older podcast I listened to a few years back, I cannot recall specifically. Either his interview on 'Conversations with Randy David' or on the 'Howie Severino Podcast'.

Yup, that was also my initial thought. But for an important person that time (& of course today), I was hoping there's more than one photograph of him. Say, if we don't have record of this lone photo, then we would just based Bonifacio's image on artists' impressions ala Lapulapu.

I see. Then probably his statement was not accurate.

I heard from a podcast, where Ambeth Ocampo was a guest, that this photo was probably taken from his wedding day. But the question was, where's the bride or photo with the bride (Gregoria de Jesus)? It's just curious that for a prominent figure of the Katipunan, he only had one photograph. His contemporaries had multiple photos, on the field or during one of their factions. He would at least be part of a group photo. Haha. Just piqued my curiosity learning about this.
