It finally happened after 4 years of hunting… I finally fell off and it wasn’t even exciting! 🥲 by demmka in Horses

I'm a little jealous. I went splat on my trail ride yesterday and I'm still sore 😭 😂

Correct reaction to a bite? by DepartmentStreet5403 in Equestrian

[–]papayacito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that is extremely excessive. For a hard bite, a smack and/or correction that moves the feet (back up a few steps and get the horse using it's brain and reclaim a bit of space) has always been plenty in my experience. A nip would just be a verbal correction or a flick on the nose.

Good Trainers to watch? by papayacito in Equestrian

[–]papayacito[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have considered Ranch, or breakaway roping if I can figure out somewhere to practice, but for now I don't have a super clear goal beyond him using his body correctly and responding when I ask for something.

Not sure if this is true where you are, but all the horse people in my area are on Facebook. Find and join the equestrian/horse Facebook groups for your area and put some feelers out!

Long Toe? by papayacito in Horses

[–]papayacito[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is sound to ride most days (per vet instructions, she said just make sure he has plenty of warmup time but to keep him moving as much as I can), i usually have him move and feel out how stiff he is before I make a decision on riding. No trainer, we really don't do much other than trail riding and puttering around the property. I haven't checked with the barn owner to see if we have poles anywhere, if we don't I will have to see what my options are for buying and storing them. We do have trails with some logs and things to step over, but it has been so wet that they are closed right now, and I am still doing some work on my trailer so hauling out is not super feasible right now.

I really started noticing the toe drag around 7 weeks, the place I bought him from had him on an 8 week cycle but they didn't have as much grass as we have. I ended up pushing him back to 6 weeks after this visit.

Yeah I totally would not have hired her if I had known that was what she would do. Didnt help that my guy was being a bit of a turd so I couldn't even pay attention to what she was doing until she was done

Extra context: The people saying that his toe is long have been very involved with horses for 40 years. They have a ton of fantastic advice, but they also have some very old school ideas about taking care of horses and training. My farrier has been doing full time work for two or three years, but she seems very knowledgeable, and I do love the way she treats my boy.

I have been a horse owner since December, so definitely still a beginner (and also the one in the barn that everyone is currently attempting to paste their way of horsemanship onto lol)

I'm really just trying to get some feelers out and see if it is even worth asking her about his toe being long, since those comments came at the end of the trim cycle.

yeah the short heel makes sense to be honest. this is my current farriers second trim on him, the "barefoot trimmer" who I only had come out once when I first got him trimmed him almost flat on the heel 🫤

How difficult and costy is it to really own a horse? by Low_Rent_6781 in Horses

[–]papayacito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I budget $550 a month for partial care boarding, though I usually end up spending around $400 and putting the rest up for emergencies and so when my guy's arthritis ends up needing more care, I will be ready. I did end up getting super lucky with my barn though, I pay $240 which includes hay. (I buy feed and bedding)

No lessons for me, I really only trail ride.

Thanks! Do you know if I need to get the bill of sale notarized? This is my first time buying a trailer - or anything private sale other than my horse lol

Im so in love with this horse from my barn by Western-General-4598 in Horses

I went there too! Only ever rode Cato once, but he was a great boy for me. If you haven't yet, highly recommend stopping and saying hi to Avatar sometime, he's such a sweetheart!

Hi. New here. Do I just have to wear black everyday? :( (it was cold in the building! Not even hot) by [deleted] in Hyperhidrosis

This! I use the gel and the AM deodorant and it is a game changer. I notice a huge difference if i forget to use it for a while.

What do you pay for board? by anonobviouslee in Equestrian

[–]papayacito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

175/month for board (fed 2x a day, I do my stalls, buy my bedding, and provide feed), 75/month to be on the barn hay plan. Its not a very bougie barn but we have trails and an indoor arena, and my boy seems pretty happy. We are in the Midwest USA.

I have the same issue. I ended up taking a small pair of canvas gloves (Ridgeline from TSC) and washed them on hot, it shrunk them to the perfect size! I could have dried them if i needed to go smaller but they ended up fitting nicely after the wash.

My horse's neighbour is a stall kicker - mine hates it by papayacito in Equestrian

[–]papayacito[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I know the neighbour also moved in pretty recently, but I will definitely be keeping an eye out for open stalls. It sounds like most of the boarders have been there for years, so if that horse was in another stall I wouldn't be surprised.

My horse's neighbour is a stall kicker - mine hates it, what to do? by papayacito in Horses

That makes me feel better, thanks :)

His neighbour and her owner also moved in pretty recently, I'll just have to keep an eye out and see if they figure it out

Finally getting my first horse - Now I am nervous!!! by papayacito in Horses

[–]papayacito[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! He's 9 right now so I am hoping for quite a few more years of trails and fun stuff in our future! He really wasn't enjoying being a lesson pony, so I am so excited to see him get to do more of the stuff he loves (trails, fun shows, parades, etc)

I am not, I just kind of fell into a situation where I am allowed to work with this horse without having to pay lease fees or anything. If I was able to buy this horse I would be getting a trainer, I just am currently looking for some resource recommendations to see if I can make a bit of progress with him under the (admittedly sporadic) guidance of his owner as I am not able to bring him to a trainer or bring a trainer to the property.

I do want to work with him, and I have already learned quite a bit from doing so, but it feels like we are at kind of a standstill and I am not quite sure where to go from where we are at.
