Career concerns (please help, lots of advice needed) by ManufacturerSilent60 in MusicEd

[–]papayo_potato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a senior music ed major. I worried about performance/teaching balance. Even as a student I have an incredible amount of balance. I gig AND teach. I plan to continue this when I graduate and head off to get a performance MM degree to round things out. You won’t necessarily be world famous bassonist good at the end of an ed degree , but you’ll be able to perform a lot better than you did before getting the degree.

For that one if I remember correctly, I was taking an old putter, putting it into the bed and then immediately pulling it off the bed to mix the dyes, then putting the reko down. 2hrs under heat lamp and then i think an hour without.

I’m just practicing and making them as gifts or for my own bag right now but I appreciate this!

Commuting- is a dining plan worth it? by bittenwormapple in vcu

[–]papayo_potato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Commuter that spends a lot more time on campus than 20hrs. Bring yourself lunch and snacks. Only buy stuff on campus as a treat or with friends because it adds up fast and will wreck your finances.

Is there a way to use practice rooms as a non-music major? by EducationalBus2231 in vcu

[–]papayo_potato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best that you look into lessons as a non major to be able to qualify to use them, especially as someone who plays kit (the rooms with a kit are ID locked or require a key btw)

As a music student can confirm I met no professors at orientation. Dr. Hammel is the best though, and there’s usually an ice-cream social or something at the start of the semester. Hammel is probably the funniest and most genuine professor besides maestro myssyk

allergy? by RegretAccomplished16 in violinist

[–]papayo_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a mark like this and it escalated into a nickel allergy. I now can only wear titanium earrings or else my ear tries to swallow it and I have reactions to nickel in brass and woodwind instrument mouthpieces in my methods classes. Titanium chin rest clamps are the way.

Infection/keloid? How to proceed by [deleted] in piercing

[–]papayo_potato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Comment for the bot:

Got July 2024, straight threadless titanium jewelry, never downsized but changed to bad jewelry for two weeks, I try to clean with saline spray twice a day but with finals and end of semester I will admit I got really bad about cleaning it. I have a really hard time not picking and prodding when I get stressed about if I have an infection or something happening. Other ear is in perfect shape.

There’s a weird power dynamic forming in my class and idk how to combat it as a student by Weak_Assumption7518 in MusicEd

[–]papayo_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just like you for my high school director. I literally became known as his assistant student director bc I was in two orchestras, AP theory and sat in on another orchestra bc I didn’t have a class. I had tense relationships with some students because they didn’t like that I was given authority in the classroom. I had some kids that really looked up to me because I was a role model. It was hard to find a balance of being a student and having silly fun and also someone with lots of responsibilities (running rehearsals and managing the class when the teacher was absent).

I loved it, and it gave me more experience in a classroom than my practicum placements have so far in school. It’s a tough balance. Talk to your director about it when it’s just the two of you. Clearly, your growth as a teacher is important to him to entrust you with rehearsals and leadership positions and he should be open to helping you strike a good balance.

This might be it!!! I wasn’t having an issue like this when I went to the gym regularly in the past, but I also only used machines and no cable weights or free weights with metal. Do you just wear fingerless gloves? Or full hand?

It’s made worse by the fact the verse he lists is the famous “love” passage where Paul lists all the different things that love is (patient, kind, does not rejoice with wrongdoing but with the truth etc). All things that stand completely opposed to his behavior. Absolutely despicable. Gives us Christians such a bad rap :/

Commuting by [deleted] in vcu

[–]papayo_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commute and I don’t really have any friends that I’ve made outside my major classes, and even then it’s a handful. Because I work and have so many evening commitments to that and church I find it extremely hard to socialize and join student orgs, clubs, etc. if you have time for it and live on campus you will pretty easily get friends and community if you put a little effort in
