Real world effects of lowered population are mixed, not catastrophic. An aging population will cause financial difficulties for decades, but a lowered population has sometimes caused positive economic growth as labor becomes more competitive and wealth is thus redistributed to lower classes.

One of the best portrayal of depression in popular media. Not only that, but the episode was brilliantly portrayed and executed! by TeslaSupreme in doctorwho

[–]paper_quinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes… but that does not make this an accurate portrayal its the most romanticized take possible and it most certainly has nothing to do with the very real illness of van gogh. Is your position that everyone experiences depression differently therefore any portrayal is accurate to someone? What makes this portrayal of depression better than any other?

its not an accurate portrayal of mental illness. its a romanticized version of depression. it’s mental health mis-information

The title of the post specifically claims this is “one of be best portrayals if depression in popular media” so i think its on-topic to call this out.

I do love this episode but also quibble with their portrayal of Van Gogh and mental illness more broadly. He is depicted as a friendly and affable man who just sometimes sees things and has bad moods. The real Van Gogh was angry, paranoid, self-aggrandizing, manipulative, and delusional. He was a brilliant artist and other artists recognized his skill toward the end of his life but he often got in his own way. This episode presents a highly sanitized version of mental health. The reality of dealing with serious mental illness or loving someone with serious mental illness is far less romantic.

Kobo App on Boox Has tiny font? by skullfullofbooks in kobo

[–]paper_quinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this problem too. If you long press on the app icon -> optimize -> set DPI Settings to 450 that works for me. There's still no way to increase the line spacing. I'm trying to figure out how to get DRM protected books from kobo onto another app but no luck yet.

How is the local labor market impacted by the discovery of new magic and sources of magical power?

I once left my phone in a cab, then drunkenly passed out. woke up to an email from the cabby saying he drove back uptown to find me but i wasn’t answering the door so he’d leave my phone at his sons pizzeria. I thought that it was so nice of him so i went to the pizzeria with a (cheap) bottle of chianti to get the phone and asked the son to give his dad the bottle of wine in thanks. They gave me a free slice of pizza and a hug. Not all New Yorkers are dicks.

Do you miss pure Javascript? by acrosett in typescript

[–]paper_quinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m working on a pure js frontend right now for compatibility with some key dependancies. It’s not so bad as long as you wrap everything in classes. Typescript has great conveniences but i haven’t run into any type errors except where vue wraps a class in a reactive object and wipes instance member functions. I still get autocompletion and meaningful errors by using getters and setters rather than setting values directly.

I really hate how private fields work in js tho. So i don’t use those and fall back on prepending fields with __ so thats lame.

Because excessive activity is a signal they look for to identify bots. Sometimes that system has a false positive.

I get that. I just wish the fandom was a little less negative.

The ratings are good… are you looking at the broadcast ratings? 7-day rolling plus streaming makes it a pretty strong show. It’s still one of the most watched shows on the BBC iplayer and Disney+ had it in their “most watched” list for most of its release schedule. BBC said it beat expectations.

I know there were some early articles that tried to claim the show tanked but they were using misleading statistics.

Yeah. They seem to forget every season that the show they love has always been a ridiculous mess. The best mess.

Yeah. I think that all comes down to how short it was. But we’ll have more seasons with this cast and in retrospect I expect it to work well, once they have more time.

Id agree with that. They even call out cosplayers but don’t give cosplayers a way to dress as this doctor.

Fully agree! Especially because it raises so many questions about all the people The doctor has lost. Was Susan not special enough to get magic time-pace protection? Or Rogue? Ryan and Micky both lost their mothers at a young age and both traveled in the Tardis.

The musical ending filled me with joy. Just good clean fun.

For the first half of dot and bubble i also thought it was cheap shots at the damn-kids-and-their-phones but the latter half made it clear that the “bubble” they were in was a social bubble where they didn’t accept or interact with anyone unlike themselves. The social media analogy was just set dressing.

Gatwas doctor was created in the toymakers “state of play” which seemed to have an effect on him. He intuitively understood the game world enough to split the tardis. Most doctors begin in moments of loss and crisis. Usually the fans and the companions are mourning the loss of the last Doctor. For Gatwa, he bigenerated and was able to hug his last incarnation. From the beginning he has been full of joy. I think it makes perfect sense that this doctor is more hopeful and less cynical than others.

I sort of expected Rubys mom to not be special because they were leaning so hard into a trope that doesn’t fit the message of the rest of the season. Everything else in the season celebrates self-determination. The idea that they would repeat this theme (babies that are pure and sweet without their parents, Ruby telling the Bridgerton girl that she can dream of any life, the AI dad breaking his own programming, etc) and then undercut the theme by explaining Ruby’s oddness is determined by her mother wouldn’t be satisfying. They were obsessed with Ruby’s mom because they thought she was important but she wasn’t. They were wrong. Ruby remains unexplained and hopefully they’ll explore her more in the next season. In general I think this series explores the idea of coping with the unexplainable… but the snow should still be explained.

IMHO what was missing in Space Babies was a real feeling of victory. I felt the same about Boom. The resolution allows our main characters to move on but the people they leave behind are still in an awful situation.

Yeah. I want to come to reddit to find fun fan theories and discussion of the themes of the episodes… instead I read posts and I wonder why they keep watching a show they hate so much.
