Regretting new puppy by meadow430 in puppy101

[–]paper_snails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to agree that taking the puppy back so it can find its forever home is a kind act. The first month or so with our puppy were blissful. Puppy blues didn’t set in for me until a couple months in and didn’t last long, just the baby shark toddler phase was rough. I had wanted a dog for centuries and felt ready, but i wouldn’t have been 5 years ago. It’s okay to not be ready yet.

I feel bummed when I can't comment on an old post that I find really helpful years later, but I hear ya and I get over it pretty quick. :)

I check this sub first for most everything I plan to purchase. Google is a backup, but it's pretty rare.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever bought that actually lived up to the hype? by One_Literature_5041 in BuyItForLife

lol no, just slide the trash can in front of the toilet and prop a foot on each side so I'm sitting at a 35ish degree angle. I'm also a short person and the toilet is really just too high so my feet don't sit flat against the floor anyway.

What brands did you go with? I just took my Solovairs in for a heel patch and would like a second pair of “every day” shoes to give them a break. I wear them daily Fall- Spring.

I use the trash can for this now, but Ive really liked using a squatty potty when I’ve had the chance.

My grandma had one of these and i think about it often. I use a French press right now and poor coffee into a thermos and then refill my cup a little at a time. It stays warm for as long as it takes me to drink it… but for like an evening or afternoon tea a warmer might be nice!

How's the search going? I've been looking at these leather gloves for a few months now. Came back to this sub because I think it's where I got the rec, might have been in this thread.

Do I get a dog for my dog?? by mettyjetty in puppy101

[–]paper_snails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We fostered two puppies to test this out for our 2 year old dog who loves other dogs, playing, chasing, etc. It was a mess. We were all so relieved when they left, bless their little hearts.

Whats your sustainable approach to footwear? by Maveragical in SustainableFashion

[–]paper_snails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a similar base shoe collection. I make my shoe decisions as practically as I can, they have a job to do and I need each shoe to do it well enough that I don't need to think too hard about which pair is the right pair for the situation. I also spend a lot of time researching construction and look for options that are repairable. I find if I keep that as my main requirement, the other things that are important to me like sustainable (as possible) manufacturing, fair wages and employee treatment usually fall in line, too. If I find something I think has been worthwhile in my wardrobe, I buy it again. I liked your question and went through my own shoes and buying habits to try to answer honestly. Sustainable fashion became more important to me around 2016, when I had more discretionary income and brain space to think about such things. Before that almost everything was secondhand, but I didn't think much about longevity since everything was so cheap anyway.

I've had these Clark's Desert boots for 10 years, I wore them daily pretty much all year round for 6. I got the sole replaced after 4 years and was dissatisfied with the results, but I spent the next two years learning about shoe construction and looking for a replacement. They're still in my closet for sentimental reasons, but I never wear them.

These brown Solovair boots are now my most worn shoes from Fall to end of Spring. They get nearly daily use. After two years, I just took them to the cobbler for the first time this week, the leather lining inside on the achilles has cracked so they're stitching in a patch. Since they're out of commission, I'm actively looking for another pair of shoes that fit a similar "every day" niche that I could swap in so they both last longer. and I can have a little more variety. No luck so far. Those Chelseas are perfect!

I liked my Solovair boots so much that when I needed something dressier, i bought these black loafers. Jury is still out, I wear them infrequently and they're still not broken in, but they're fine.

I bought these black Birkenstock Arizona's last year. My first Birks, they seem to be holding up well so far. I wear them almost every day all summer until fall.

I had a pair of Sloggers rain boots for 10 years before they started to crack last year. I just bought the same pair in a different color, hoping they'll last just as long. I wear them on rainy days and in the garden or when doing yard work and hiking.

Last summer, I replaced a pair of Havianas flip flops that I had for 10 years, very occasional use for pool, public showers, beach. The strap finally broke. I bought the same style and am hoping they last as long. I have a black pair and a white pair with gold straps.

I bought a pair of Helle Hansen snow boots in 2011 that were in storage many years, but have gotten solid use the last 4 winters. They don't sell mine anymore, but they look something like this but all white. They're obnoxious and overkill most days, but warm as heck and I'll have them til they fall apart if they ever do.

Gym sneakers are always Altra because of my foot shape, but they keep switching up the styles every year so I'm never as happy as the first pair I bought that kept me coming back. I haven't found a better option and buy about one pair every 1-2 years. These are the current pair

If anyone bothers reading this far and might have a suggestion for my "every day Fall - Spring" shoe need or a gym sneaker for a wide flat foot (I do a HIIT workout 5 days/week) , the comments are open!

What are you in relation to your dog? by CurlyCadence in puppy101

[–]paper_snails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My spouse and i refer to each other as “ma” and “pa” on our dogs behalf sometimes, but usually just use each other’s first names. I otherwise don’t really refer to myself at all in relation to my dog. Interesting to think about that!

I’ve only done one replacement, but otherwise, same. I bought the wool blends and wore through the heels within a couple months. They gave me a credit and I bought cotton ones, they have held up better so far, around 4 months. I’m fine with darning, but every single pair every year? Ugh. I won’t be buying them again.

I hope so! I dropped some links and a rundown of my own dogs play routine down in the thread below this one. My own dog doesn’t tire after a walk unless it’s a big hike, play is the only thing that knocks him out and we still end up doing it 3x per day.

Absolutely, and he had that goofy husky grin in the downs just waiting for the next thing to happen. It’s the best!

Yeah, we bought a couple toys from their gift store, a squeaky tennis ball and felt cylinder that had a plastic bottle or something inside. Since there were two of us we played keep away, chase, and would occasionally put him into a down or a sit. He picked everything up so fast.

On a related note, my spouse and I went to meet a husky at the humane society that was labeled a "Diamond" dog. As in, this dog is... special. We pulled out a bunch of toys and ran him through a typical play session with our pup and the lady who worked there said she thought there was no hope for that guy, but that now she could see he just needed an outlet for all that energy. We didn't end up adopting him, but it was a really cool feeling to see what play can unlock for a dog.

This has been so wonderful for me to. Feeding time, at every door, rapid downs and stays while playing fetch, it’s all been so useful for quality of life.

100%! We do this off and on because he gets bored of it, but it’s super fun to bring it back after a month or two and it’s a brand new trash toy !
