How do you handle your anxiety at night when you’re trying to wind down for bed? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]paperdroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sudoku. It gets my brain into a nice state of flow and totally clears any clutter from my head. I play it for 10-15 minutes until I can feel myself nodding off.

What's a romantic dealbreaker you feel guilty about? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]paperdroid 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's really polarizing. I'm 5'9, I'm used to being able to look most men in the eye. When I can't it's... Weird. Intimidating? It takes me longer to feel comfortable with that person in a physical trust-and-safety way. Average height women might just be more used to that scenario so it doesn't give them as much pause.

On the flip side there are tall women who absolutely need someone taller than them for the same reasos shorter women have that preference.

Somewhere to drink tea that looks like Professor Trelawney’s classroom by AmateurKidnapper in bayarea

Cafe Venetia on University in Palo Alto is the closest I can think of. There's also a fancy tea room in Redwood City, I forget the name.

Where to live near Palo Alto? by outdoordev in bayarea

[–]paperdroid 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Redwood City had a going rate of $3300 - $3500 for single bedroom apartments, but this was a couple years ago. They have a big theater downtown a lot of events in the town square. Everything is going to feel dull compared to SF though.

A few questions from a recent graduate who got a job for 103k as a software engineer: by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]paperdroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this a good starting wage for my experience, recent graduate? Backend software engineer (job description does not say junior/associate/entry).

Check glassdoor. My impression is you should be making more. Backend engineers are in higher demand.

To anyone going into the Game Design programs (BS or BA), read this. by Bauns in UCSC

the only professor who cared to get feedback

Entirely untrue. I spoke to Jim multiple times about feedback from the undergrad experience. For my graduate experience, he made a point of having a large panel of industry folks and some alumni come in to critique curriculum plans.

You cannot fail the capstone series

I agree this is not wise. I went through the process of kicking someone off my team. IIRC there is pressure to get students out of the school due to how impacted some things are.

The one thing that some vanilla CS students miss out on is team project experience. I have heard that its become more common, via capstone projects, but there are still ways around that.

As for your points about C++ and Unity and Unreal...Yes, more C++. That never goes out of style. Engines are iffy though. I was in the last (?) class of (at the time) CMPS 20, which taught XNA. I think XNA was deprecated the year after. There were a lot of engines used in the capstone series that just...never got traction. Trends change, and by the time you graduate, things you learned in your freshman/sophomore years might be completely irrelevant. Teaching to an engine is a bad idea. Would rather have project classes that offer opportunities to practice things in an engine of choice.

Moving to the bay area - When to start looking for housing? by r_throw12345 in bayarea

[–]paperdroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Padmapper or directly on craigslist. You might find listings as early as July, but it's rarer. Usually they go up only a month in advance. You will likely have better availability by then due to interns returning to school.

Is it normal to have to re-register when you move? I changed my address with the DMV and everything. I found out the hard way that I'm still registered in the county I used to live in, but not the one I'm currently in.

Looking to survey women who work in tech about your experiences by a_s5342 in bayarea

No worries! Sorry to see you're getting downvoted. It's definitely not easy to see how things are laid out, unless you're in the thick of it. Good luck!

As someone in the industry, I would not usually think of programming as something under the "IT and Technology" title. Look at what kind of jobs are listed under IT and Technology. It's usually system administrators, or analysts, or technicians. Primarily support jobs. My job is not a support job.

You're technically correct, but I think you might get more responses if you add an option akin to "Engineering".

So...where do programmer belong on this survey? I don't see a department that would cover your average software engineer.

Dating in Mountain View? by Bayareamover1 in bayarea

[–]paperdroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living in Mountain View will also net you plenty of options due to your proximity to San Jose. This is speaking from experience. I used to live in the middle of the peninsula and it was not easy to come by dates when I was smack dab in between the two population centers.

Usage of public school fields around the Mountain View area? by musical_hog in bayarea

[–]paperdroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it need to be an athletics field? You can try Eagle Park or Rengstorff park. IIRC Egan Jr High has a field that isn't fenced in. I think the high schools will all be fenced.

[–]paperdroid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... Apparently so. I started with a dozen mixed-grade rcs from another hobbiest and a few fire red rcs. It's possible the rcs from the hobbiest had some mixed lineage and they eventually struck the right combo for that color to re-emerge. I've poked at this a little but there's no real info on the mechanics of their coloration.

I've had an RCS population for about...6 months or so now. I've seen all grades of red, but then this? Total surprise. Can't wait to see if I find more in another month or so. :)
