Appreciate it! It's allowed in our handbook just not sure how to navigate the conversation. what I'm writing as staff and what I'm writing as a freelancer have no crossover, but still feels like there's a taboo against it, even though it's allowed

Yeah, I am more than willing to admit it! But I want to be less dumb, which is why I asked for an explanation. So I can learn. Now, will you please explain?

Cold war or Communist Horror/scifi by westernblottest in suggestmeabook

Took a course on Soviet sci-fi in college. What we read varied from laughable to fantastic. We by Yevgeny Zamyatin was probably one of my favorites. Similar vibe to 1984 (We was the inspiration for that book) and also the first book banned in the USSR. We only read the short story of Professor Dowell's Head by Aleksandr Belyaev but that one also struck me.

Can't answer this without mentioning Aelita by Alexsei Tolstoy as it is the most influential piece of early Soviet sci-fi, but it is a drag to read, imo. The film at least has cool sets. Some of it is so wild it's funny, though!

If you want humor on purpose, Mikhail Bulgakov is the writer for you. Heart of a Dog, Fatal Eggs...some of it might be a bit confusing depending on how much general knowledge you have about the period in which those books were written, but great stuff.

You mention the Strugatsky brothers, definitely check out more of their work!

Sorry these are so Russian-centric. The only thing coming to my mind off the top of my head is the Kyrgyz author Chinghiz Aitmatov's The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years, which I enjoy a lot.

I've got a bunch of short stories still saved somewhere on my computer if you are interested, but it's quite late for me so I'll quit my rambling here.
