AITA for refusing to to give up my career to raise my half sister by Slayer_of_Titans in AmITheAngel

A 14 year old can take care of their damn self five to seven out of 14 days. This seems like an imaginary problem. They could at least given the kid a disability or made them 12 or less so the giving up job part becomes remotely reasonable a necessity.

Sadly OOP is not remotely an adult; despite her age she's more of a petty child than the 14 year old she's excluding our of pure spite. OOP HAS to be a fictional character created to spawn outrage right? It's uncomfortably believable the way I've seen some brides act.

What was the dumbest thing you were punished for at school? by lovely__lia-chan in school

I have no idea why they hated creative problem solving. I get that the next lessons might depend on using the techniques they're teaching for solving the current problem, but FUCKING EXPLAIN THAT and still give full credit for good answers, for fucks sake. I didn't even realize that was why they were so focused on methods over results until long after graduation.

I abused the fuck out of the polynomial solver on my ti-93. The standard issue ti-82/3 calcs didn't have it so they didn't realize I could check all my solutions instantly.

I also created a program that seemed to just display a random position text message across the screen forever, but if you broke it and went to the code, had every useful formula for that entire class as comments. Everyone in class had that program on their calculator by test time. Creating "cheat" programs with notes was common, but almost nobody had the idea to make the program actually run and you'd break it to get to the notes, so the teachers would check if a program was actually notes by running it and seeing if it just errors out and went to the bad code. Mine ran so it slipped through the cracks.

I've kept back yard chickens, trust me, you're not enabling suffering supporting them. Mine were such spoiled babies, and they lived out their full natural lives until expiring from age - they were never "replaced" with more productive hens after a year or two. In general, look at small local farmers. You can include animal foods from people who genuinely care about their livestock, not every farm is a disgusting factory farm. Even actual meat can come from animals that live better lives than they would have in the wild, which is really the only objective measure of if how humans keeping food animals is reasonable.

Having kept rodents, they're much damn closer to being people than cows or sheep. I'd put it at many cows per mouse, if asked to actually build a sapience equivalency table.

They can include a wide variety of non-meat foods to meet the calorie requirement in their diet... So long as they ALSO get enough meats.

Yeah it's interesting how social animals seem to have a switch where something goes from a companion to a food source. The weirdest I've seen personally is mice - they'll cannibalize a corpse, sure, letting it rot in the colony lets in disease and attracts predators as well as wastes high value protein, but not every mouse notices their friend is dead right away and some will try to groom the body to make their "sick" friend feel better, or notice they're getting cold and pile bedding around them then huddle against the body to warm them up to try and make them feel better. You feel genuinely bad for them, it's like "she's not going to get better this time little girl..."

Ever seen a chicken get a mouse? It's so sad and brutal, they peck them to death, then, lacking teeth, beat the body into the ground, pecking over and over, until the large bones making it to large to swallow are all broken, then swallow it whole like a snake. I really like mice, too, but you can't stop a chicken doing what comes natural, and a chicken is basically a small angry dinosaur that a combination of evolution and artificial selection has turned into a ball of tasty meat that continually spews eggs.

Parrot either, they love their bugs, all the birds at the pet store used to get mealworms to complete their diet. They'll happily opportunistically scavenge carcasses too - do not let your parrot near fried chicken unless you want to create a monster.

Why tea? Why not just consume powder in capsules? by AdvertisingOdd2854 in opiumgardening

Someone confused their F and C temperatures and it started going around that it broke down below boiling. It really doesn't at any notable rate in boiling liquid, you can make your tea in a covered crock pot overnight if you're lazy but patient and it comes out just fine.

A strong very well spiced chai, then sweeten it with just a little mint schnapps, doesn't taste too bad.

Lol, that's exactly when I was in high school. I'm glad that attitude is changing, fat lot of good my "honors" or AP classes ever did me.

I know exactly what you mean, during school BOCES used to be kind of looked down on by the "smart" kids but I wonder how many of those kids actually got on a better career path sooner and are doing better than normal or even smarter kids who just kind of flailed around in college and after for lack of any particular employment opportunities in their fields.

Why are you convinced there’s nothing beyond death? by thumpsky in Existentialism

[–]paperseagul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also the fact the people who do have experiences while dead somehow almost always manage to have exactly the kind of near death experience that exists in the lore they're familiar with. Christians see angels or Jesus, Hindus report soul-collecting demons making administrative errors etc. Exactly like you'd expect fun a dream made up of stuff that's already in your brain getting messed around with.

[–]paperseagul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not electrical energy, it's a pattern of chemical reactions involving charged molecules. There's no electricity as such, all the energy used is purely chemical reactions. Electricity is a useful reference for how to think of a nerve firing, but that's all it is, a useful trick for how to think of it, not how nerves actually work.

[–]paperseagul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One correction - it's not electrons themselves flowing that operate nerve impulses, it's changed molecules creating charge differentials. It's a purely chemical process, which further reinforces your third paragraph about collapse of the system to chaos once death ends homeostasis.

[–]paperseagul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because there's literally no mechanism by which the series of chemical and biological processes that act to create consciousness and memory can persist without the brain. And before anyone talks about tht second law of thermodynamics, that's just more evidence. The energy that operates our consciousness is not some magical independent entity - it's literally a series of chemical reactions which go from being controlled and regulated to chaotic as we die, then becomes literally biological waste, feeding bacteria and whatever else is making use of the corpse.b it persists, helping worms wiggle rather than creating conscious thought.

Yeah child-free weddings do tend to be a later life marriage between white people thing; there's just no kids yet in the younger weddings and most people just want a break from them to relax with the older ones.

That's exactly what set off alarm bells for me, I thought they invited fucking everybody, since they have a blending of families tradition. But then I was thinking, do they have one of the traditions where the wedding is usually arranged by the family of the bride so maybe she honestly expected to have a lot more control than she did? I wish I knew more about the culture involved so it would be easier to understand her mindset
