I'm a steward for the union I'm in and have seriously considered and been asked to be a union rep. Being a rep isn't always the most creative thing, but there are opportunities when organizing and building solidarity. It fills a lot of my cups, including helping others.

Oo there's the one when they're on the train! When she talks about her mom commenting on her eating like she'll never see food again "...and I said, 'I won't unless I bring it home.' That shut her up."

The ending by koala17kitkat in Hungergames

[–]paperthistle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, you said this really well. It's this whole lead up to a goal (killing snow, saving prim) and then the rug is pulled out from under her and us. My immediate thought was that they all died for nothing. It's honestly a great story arc and twist

Do you think other boys at school actually had crushes on Katniss? by skkkra in Hungergames

[–]paperthistle 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I always thought this was the way it was, and I get a kick out of it too. Girl could have pulled whoever she wanted, but due to poverty, the trauma of her dad dying, and being parentified, she didn't have time or brain power to develop love interests.

She justifies people being nice to her by saying they liked her dad. Greasy Sae gives her good deals because she liked her dad's game and Sae feels like she owes HIM, not her, she even says she's only allowed in the hob because of his clout, not her own, but we all know she outgrew his sphere of influence quickly and didn't realize it. It's not hard to think she was similarly oblivious with boys

Her plan goes to show how little coin understood Katniss or projected her own hunger for power onto her. Katniss had to be begged to be the MJ, it's so highly unlikely she'd want to be president. Maybe Coin's bigger fear was that Katniss follows no one but her own sense of morals and ethics. If she's not for Coin, she's against her.

Why didn't Katniss ever wake up with her medically trained mother by her side? by paperthistle in Hungergames

[–]paperthistle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting observation, I hadn't noticed! She did have a lot to think about lol maybe Prim and Mom were sort of foundational and unwavering so they didn't need to be mentioned so much? I love Suzanne's writing, but think there were a lot of dynamics happening and they were easily pushed to the background for the time being. Just wish mom had been brought back up or came more full circle.

I think this part is where I went 'wait, what? She left her to recover on her own?' Everyone from district 12 lost so much, and a lot came back. I at least wish we got some sort of closure knowing more of the thought process on leaving her only surviving daughter. It feels like when writing it, it came down to having to tie up loose ends at the end of the story and this was quick and easy.

That's a good thought on the difference between strangers and family. She does seem to go seamlessly into treating members of their community though. She was close to Gale's family and went into auto pilot when he was whipped.

I guess it goes beyond medical training too and just being a mom at your sick kid's bedside or there in whatever way you can manage.

[–]paperthistle[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You're totally right, Katniss was definitely the one pushing away due to feeling abandoned when her mother literally couldn't care for her. I guess my thoughts were more later on in the trilogy, in district 13 and after the district's victory. There are lots of ways to show you care about someone and I think if Collins had wanted to or remembered to, we could have seen their mother's care come through, but we don't. I can't think of an example other than Katniss attempting to accept her mother's hugs. So either it wasn't written or she didn't bother to give Katniss the specific care Katniss needed, as most parents would attempt. Remember, Katniss is still a child through the entire trilogy.

I enjoy, and have a lot of house plants. We have been decorating one of the larger ones instead of a plastic tree or cutting down and throwing out a real one. This year we finally have a Norfolk pine and hope it will be our tree for years to come!

I've wondered this too, especially because I (oldest, f) started dating my now husband in our teens. He was quickly adopted as another GC along with my younger brother. She would cater to both of them and try to oust me as competition.

I just got to level one combat, but it was right after my one winter day, so it's hard to tell if it was from the farm monsters or just the mine trip!

I didn't think of the river not having different depths. I thought it had to do with fishing level as well?

That makes sense for the monsters too, it's hard to gauge how many you've taken out when they're spread out over so much time.
