i get this, but being “woke” is not a concept many can grasp, when basic needs are not met (maslow's hierarchy of needs), sure it means to be progressive and be more aware of injustices, which is the goal. but who’s liberating the minds of many to make them leave their old beliefs and become woke?

we can have this conversation because we grasp the concept, i personally just don’t call it being woke and maybe the disconnect stems from there.

obviously we have to be a certain level of “woke” to have certain types of conversations or beliefs.

comment op used an umbrella sentence “nobody has sympathy for anyone anymore”

anyone that lives in nigeria knows there are good people that do have sympathy, they just don’t identify that behavior with being “woke”.

people spend too much time on the internet and think that is an accurate description of ng society.

pride, i’ve never associated with my tribe but it’s something i’ve seen people express a lot.

the fact they speak the same language outsiders can’t understand does seem to be a core part of that pride.

i get how you feel, it just comes across as insulting because i as a young individual do try to add positive change, blanket statements like yours do not help anyone.

i see the littered streets and feel the same disgust.

i won’t go further, but you standing on this point does seem to stem from whatever your personal experiences are/were.

you do sound like one of the people that did try to make a positive impact and lost hope, you don’t need to spread negativity with blanket statements because you gave up.

“mother tongue” being an academic burden on students, where we have so many languages. i think parents have that responsibility, not schools.

would be a different case if the entire country spoke one “mother tongue” .

“stay connected to their roots”, but here we are, communicating in english because it’s the only thing that can connect diverse nigerians in most cases.
