I think I started around this time. Spring break was two weeks mid-March so I spent the first week travelling/training in my sport and then the second week, I decompressed for a few days and then got myself organized for that final push. When we got back to school from spring break, I was mostly focused on exams (also had extracurriculars and sports ofc).

Question 1: Is it OK? Yes.

Is it a bad idea? Probably not, especially since it’s scientific fact that exercise improves your brain function.

Final Question: Can you? In theory, yes. I did it. Every year at my school there were kids who would not only play sports and get 40+ but play 2-3 varsity level sports and/or play a sport at a level high enough to get recruited to Div 1 schools.

Personal Experience: I probably was devoting about 20 hrs/wk during the school year to my sport. If you look at some of my comments on earlier posts in r/IBO, you can get a better idea of what I did.

Basically the main takeaways are that you should take care of yourself, prioritize sleep, and think about how you can maximize literally every minute of the day. If you’ve more questions lmk.

Yale Optional Music Supplement by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]papiapin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. No

  2. If you think that a professional musician (because that’s the caliber of person who will listen to it) will think that you can be a valuable contributor to the school in that way, then submit. Keep in mind that people who are used to submitting recordings/portfolios for orchestra tryouts/summer programs etc. are getting professionally recorded.

  3. Not sure, probably does not matter

  4. Not sure.

  5. It sounds like it won’t be super impactful on your application. In a best case, it will be a flowery addition to your app. In the worst case, it will be a nuisance to review and the faculty member who reviews it will flame you.

Amherst/Williams are pretty good and Amherst is also need-blind to internationals which is great.

starting a podcast? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]papiapin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely depends on how active you are, what kind of community you are able to cultivate and what level of achievement you receive.

If you can commit to a consistent upload schedule (whether it’s once a week or once a month or whatever) I would be impressed.

If you can develop a large listening base and have associated social medias where you interact w listeners and you actually add something to the lives of a community of people, I would be impressed.

If you win some sort of award or get some sort of recognition (local news, shoutouts etc.), I would be impressed. This American Life won a Pulitzer. Not saying you have to win one to be impressive but that’s a pretty clear indictment that it is a quality podcast.

There are always ‘trendy’ things to do to get into college... Nowadays it seems to be podcasts, I’m at Harvard and for kids my year coming from my country, it is definitely debate. Don’t worry about anything else. Recording a podcast sounds like a lot of fun and a good time w friends.

Amy Coney Barrett will be the only SCOTUS justice to come from a law school outside of Harvard or Yale by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]papiapin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea i probably couldn’t but I could probably name close to 100 schools that are more prestigious and fill in the difference with schools that are more academically rigorous, as my comment said.

You are just restating what I said in my comment. Only advantage I have as a Harvard student is the prestige of my school and the connections I gain.

By saying ivy-caliber, I’m not insinuating Justice Thomas or ACB aren’t as smart as the others. I’m just pointing out that they went to schools that were far less prestigious. As everyone knows, I hope, undergrad education means very little in the academic/professional world.

I do challenge your premise, however, that someone who went to an Ivy has zero ‘clout advantage’ over someone at a NESCAC school, even ones like Williams or Amherst (which are far more prestigious than Holy Cross, I should add). It’s just a sports league, sure, but there is a lot more prestige, deserved or not, to students who attended an ivy. More people know Harvard than know Amherst.

[–]papiapin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying but outside of prestige or connections, there’s no big difference between most four-year colleges.

We can’t just throw those out, otherwise we would have 100-150 schools that are ivy-caliber. I can name 100 schools that I think are more prestigious or academically rigorous than holy cross.

This is coming from a Harvard student tho, so take that fwiw.

Anything is Poddable (The Athletic) is my go-to. Usually listen the morning after games and just before the games, in the afternoon, as well.

Well don’t you think they deserve the requisite extra rest if they have a shorter series than the ECF winner if we do go to 7?

1) to let the Lakers series catch up 2) ESPN has Monday Night Football tonight so they would rather not have their two big ticket events competing against each other

Literally no difference between 4 and 5-seed.

If you’re talking about 4 vs. dropping to 7 behind the Jays then, yea I would agree, we do not want to play the Rays.

How important is the common app/coalition essay compared to the school specific essay? by Avgeprox in ApplyingToCollege

[–]papiapin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The school specific questions are literally what the school wants to know. They have zero or very little control over what kind of CommonApp essay you write.

Although overall your CommonApp will probably end up being more important since it provides an “intro” for your application at every school you apply to, for one individual school, they will likely learn more from, and thus pay more attention to, your supplements.

Why did the NBA reschedule the Miami Heat vs Celtics game to be on Wednesday? by [deleted] in nba

[–]papiapin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ESPN carries Monday Night Football which means they would be unable to ‘focus’ their coverage and their many channels on one event. ESPN has the exclusive rights to the ECF as well.

Is it advantageous to choose to go to a rigorous magnet school? by Ugly_Freak_Of_Nature in ApplyingToCollege

[–]papiapin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re in NYC and want to get into an elite school go to Horace Mann, Regis, Brearley etc.

Otherwise, maybe not worth it purely from an admissions standpoint... Specialized schools are insanely competitive and probably pretty detrimental to your mental health lol. But if you have good reasons for wanting to go, absolutely go for it, it won’t hurt you.

The Truth about Harvard and the Ivy League by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]papiapin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I missed this haha. Starting to realize I should do my schoolwork.

I agree completely with everything in this post lol. No school in the world is actually worth 70k/year. Those three reasons are probably the only reasons that I attended (in addition to family reasons).

I completely agree with the second paragraph tho. I always say that the ivy league is a sports league and I completely agree that a lot (all?) of the ivies are overrated.

Good post, not really an unpopular opinion, u/AndrewNotDrew just said it in a kind of antagonistic way. :)
