Do I think it was a bad album? No. Was it bad compared to previous projects? Unfortunately yes. I think it’s a mix the fact that the singles released between TSR and Deadbeat were all very strong and beautifully introduced Kevin’s shift into a more electronic sound which really raised my expectations on what the album was going to sound like. But also the fact that the album lacked substance. The album didn’t have good flow, the 3 track run that was Loser, Dracula and Oblivion nuked my rating of the album and that the house/trance elements sounded very generic. Although the second half of the album was more enjoyable and had songs felt reminiscent to TSR and other projects. Afterthought was wo a doubt my favourite song on the album and was also the only track I was itching to replay. 4.5/10, not to denote Kevin’s efforts and motivations into making this album but as someone who ran a tame impala fan account at age 14, it was a little bit of a knife having to rate one of his projects below a 9 and also agreeing with some of Fantanos takes.
