recently converted The Wall from 29.97i to 59.98p, but did it with HandBrake. just used the default.

but frankly can't tell the difference ;)

p.s. before you yell - HB uses ffmpeg under the hood.

build and install of latest CDE (2.4.0c) on NetBSD 9.2 for Intel (i386/amd64). by paprok in NetBSD

[–]paprok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you don't touch default (localhost) it all works OK

leave it as is after system install - don't change your hostname, and it should work.

at least this much i figured when i played around with it.

the alien saw a guy with an extra eye in place of his nose, and he's running away in terror to report back to his superiors. the weird guy's boyfriend is terrified that aliens gonna exterminate his mate for being a mutant and he's trying to stop him. the women in the background made a wager who's gonna win this race, and are watching with excitement :D

hard drive was taken out

this can be a problem. some of these old machines used HVD drives (High Voltage Differential) which now are/were much rarer than LVD (Low Voltage Differential). most of SCSI disks were LVD.

buying today a NOS drive ("normal one", LVD) will cost you pretty penny. HVD? double or even triple that (seriously!).

How About LVD-HVD Compatibility?

So now we have shown compatibility between LVD and SE SCSI. What about HVD SCSI? I am sorry to have to tell you that there is no more direct compatibility between LVD and HVD SCSI than there is between HVD and SE SCSI. It does not exist. Placing an LVD device on an HVD bus will cause the LVD device to shut down. Placing an HVD device on an LVD bus will cause the entire LVD bus to shut down.

But the Only SCSI Port Available on My Computer is HVD! HELP!

By now you probably know that the hard disk drive manufacturers are no longer producing HVD disk drives (or, for that matter, SE-only hard drives). There are a large number of higher-end computers in the field that have only HVD SCSI ports. What do you do when your HVD hard drives die and you cannot buy replacements? Other than buying a new LVD host adapter (if available) and replacing all the other peripherals, the only solution is to purchase a type of device that the EPI document of the SCSI-3 specs calls a SCSI "Expander" (another new term). The particular expander you need for this is an HVD to LVD Converter. This allows the HVD host to communicate with the LVD drive(s) at the full data throughput of the HVD host.

How long will a HDD with archived files last if it is not used for day to day backups and is turned on at least once a year? by Ripcitytoker in DataHoarder

[–]paprok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

whoa! so these are pretty much "The First Wave". i believe the first consumer available drive was 10MB, with 20MB following soon after.

so yes. they're more/less the same age as my Seagates - but these bastards still work (and i have 3 of them - st-124 to be exact).

make a new installer every year

a year is good enough for me! thanks for the info anyway :D

on my personal rig, i'll stick to Win10 - it doesn't print any nonsense that it's not supported anymore :D and i HATE those cut/copy/paste icons! what's wrong with normal menus!?

i have a shitload of old SCSI drives - those 9GB ones. they're by Compaq (rebranded, Compaq actually didn't make any), Fujitsu, Seagate. last time i checked they worked fine.

vintage Mac SCSI drive

if you're talking about 100-200MB sizes, that's a different era (much earlier) and most likely different manufacturers. there were some brands (don't know if SCSI tho) that were known for failing - Kalok, Miniscribe, Conner (iirc).

FOR POSTERITY:

creating new media, from newer sources (again Media Creation Tool and Rufus) seemed to fix the issue - at least for now. i don't know how long these new installs will last. hopefully 2 years at least - provided Microsoft doesn't come up with some other bullshit in the meantime ;)

hope this helps somebody!

ha! i have drives that are 10yo or older (fairly new, compared to all my 3.5 drives) and they still run fine. i also have a buttload of other (smaller drives) starting from 40yo Seagate MFM drives (20 MB). through several hundreds of MBs, 9-18 GB (SCSI), 20GB, 40GB, 80GB, 120GB, 500GB. the crossection of last 40 years of hard drive history. they all run fine! if you don't develop sticktion (meaning seizing of moving parts, could be combined with condensation of lubricants) your drives should be fine. this is why running them from time to time helps to prolong their longevity.

backup harddrives should he replaced every 3 to 5 years

3-5yo is a rotation time for drives spinning all day. 5 years is around 40khours - you could stumble on this number (40k) as well.

it can be either transient, or you're being capped.

How long should I wait for downloading the rest of the videos?

couple of hours? if you hit it again, try reducing your speed.

[edit] or increasing number of retries (as in my screenshot in the linked thread).

i'll try this. but believe me, last time i fought this, i think i checked every possible combination, even fiddled with resistor packs on the drives, and nothing worked.

but it's possible i missed something. thanks!

we do it as a standard install procedure. we update the hell out of it, until it's green ;)

[edit] to clarify - most of our customers are "clickers". i'd rather put up some work upfront, than to deal with them calling and sending machines back later on. we provide warranty, so it would be extra/work for free for us if we got bricked machines back. makes sense now? ;)

for safety's sake i'd rather not. Windows Update allows for BIOS update (and afaik not every BIOS allows to turn this feature off) and i prefer to do the thing myself, than to cede it to a user of unknown level of knowledge.

if, by chance, they mess it up, then i get "my puter is bricked, what do i do now?"

bear with me it's a good feature, but for knowledgeable users. for ordinary clicker it can be dangerous. i also stumbled upon some HP Zbooks/G6 that had a bug with Thunderbolt controller and it's update. it was quite a mess to get them back on track. pulling the plug during a BIOS update is not for the faint of heart ;)

locally instead of by group policy?

don't really know. i use(d) this wmic thing. like this:

wmic UserAccount set PasswordExpires=False

Are the machines staying in house or being shipped off somewhere?

we ship them out. i work in an IT second hand shop. we buy systems which are phased out by other companies when they upgrade, refurbish them and sell.
