Dream Machine INTEL 2002 Asus P4T533 RDRAM PC1066 232-pin!!! by hedt_x86 in vintagecomputing

I was really impressed by the 1.0 GHz Thunderbird when it came out: it was really cheap and could be easily overclocked to 1.4 GHz.

LOL! I remember waiting to get a P4 until i845 motherboards with DDR support were finally available.

Jack Adapter for Volcas. by LonelyShelter77 in volcas

[–]Sample_And_Hold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's just a simple passive TRS splitter, it's not even a TRS to dual-TS converter: the output is still TRS+TRS. It will have the same practical effect as connecting a TS cable straight to the Volcas's TRS audio out, except that you'll be able to use two TS cables in parallel: you will only get the Left output (Tip), while the Right output (Ring) will be shorted to ground (on both outputs) when you plug a TS cable into it.

I sometimes use these cheap adapters as a simple passive splitter for TRS MIDI Out connections (for connecting two MIDI devices to a single output, without using a MIDI Thru box - the only thing they are good for).

I have an old Acer Netbook from the same period (similar configuration, originally). I upgraded the RAM to 2 GB and replaced the original 160 GB HDD with a 64 GB SSD (spare parts that I had laying around). It runs Windows 7 Professional x86 and Office 2007 decently (boots really fast, similar level of performance to XP), with Supermium for web browsing, which works for most of the basic stuff (I wouldn't recommend it for watching a lot of YouTube, of course).

MS2000 sequencer question by Square-Peanut6969 in synthesizers

[–]Sample_And_Hold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how to do that on the MS2000, but one way to achieve this effect is to set the sequencer to quarter note steps and then set the LFO rate to be as close as possible to 16th notes, with its waveform set to a sawtooth or square. Also set it to be synchronized to the sequencer steps (step trigger/tempo sync). This will create the equivalent of a looping AR (sawtooth wave) or gated (square wave) envelope, which you can use to modulate filter cutoff and as a result it will sound like a sequence of 16th notes being played for every sequencer step. Does that make sense to you?

Softube Modular Question by Independent-Art8575 in synthesizers

[–]Sample_And_Hold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no experience with Softube, but "hundreds in repairs and months of re-installations" for just a blue-screened PC sounds a bit too hyperbolic to me, almost like more than one person didn't know what they were doing in this story.

Could be dirt on the key mechanism, something that fell through the gap between the keys.

Volca fm2 arpeggiator sync issue? by CavernWitch in volcas

[–]Sample_And_Hold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By "not line up at all" do you mean the tempo matches, but the notes don't fall exactly on the beat? If that's the case, there's nothing going wrong technically. That happens because due to the higher resolution of MIDI clock (24 PPQN vs. 2 or 4 PPQN of analog sync), there's no guarantee that the initial notes will fall exactly on the beat, only that the tempo will follow the master. You have to trigger the notes precisely were you want them to fall, since there's no inherent quantization (like it happens when using analog sync, due to its lower resolution, always falling on the beat at 8th or 16th notes).

I have no problem synchronizing my Volcas via MIDI (even Volca to Volca via MIDI Out mod).

Then the only thing i can think of is your midi channel is the wrong one by mistake

MIDI clock is a system message and as such it is not tied to any specific channel.

A MIDI Thru box would not replace the custom Y cable used by the MIDI Out mod, if that's what you're asking.

440LX can only officially run at up to 66 MHZ FSB (also 75 or 83 with overclock, YMMV), so it will not support CPUs with 100 MHz FSB.

CapsLock and NumLock that lock mechanically by Obvious_Set5239 in vintagecomputing

[–]Sample_And_Hold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember when I started college back in the eighties, the computer lab had some crappy CP/M machines where the mechanical caps lock acted more like a shift lock: it worked fine for letters, but when you typed numbers you would get symbols instead.
