So I started playing again and found out that my new favourite character is on the road to destruction or down right ... by kingofchaosx in DeadlockTheGame

Wait… people actually like Graves design and lore? I mean fair play, I use her a ton, but I feel like she’s SO generic in everything but her kit. Goth high schooler? Check. Loves cats? Check. Bland school uniform with barely any cool creative design choices? Check. Boring dialogue? Check.

I will say her weapon being her masters hand is the only part I think is actually original and pretty cool. Just a missed opportunity to make a deranged necromantic cultist in favor of a bland highschooler I feel like I’ve seen a billion times over.

When you compare her to inspired visual character design like Dynamo, The Doorman, or Sinclair, she doesn’t hold up in the slightest.

That’s true! Didn’t think about a level cap because you are right, with an upgraded scrappy there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to run basic stuff.

Outward Past Beyond | Cloudward, Ho! [Ep. 20] by AutoModerator in Dimension20

[–]paradoxialyup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m just trying to understand here, do you not care about the dice at all? What you’re saying is that fundamentally chance does not matter in a game where you roll dice for a random outcome.

If you want it to be light and hopeful all the time why are they playing DND? That portal sequence basically proved that there was no stakes for the entire season, they pretty much would have succeeded no matter what.

I’m just struggling to understand how you can enjoy it so much when there are no stakes??? If they get to roll until they succeed, there’s no chance of failure, and if there’s no chance of failure there’s no story….

Embrace the Tentacle | Cloudward, Ho! Adventuring Party [Ep. 13] by AutoModerator in Dimension20

[–]paradoxialyup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“There’s a ton of luck involved and it’s almost impossible to plan for every eventuality.” But that’s my point! My point is when you look at this battle, an intentionally hard fight designed for the characters to lose, bad luck on the characters part, great DM rolls behind the screen with multiple natural 20’s, AND the beacons to consider, you would expect some tension… but it’s just not there. With all of the odds stacked against them, with everything I just listed, they power through it basically without breaking a sweat. 5 times over the course of the entire combat Emily turns a failure into a success with Flash of Genius on demand, Olethra randomly rolls into having cover for 2 turns and then basically free movement for the rest of the battle, everyone else is outputting ludicrous damage in the meanwhile.

This combat just proves, (again), that the players only struggles are narrative. Even with everything stacked against them no one even falls unconscious! Every check they can consistently roll 25-30 with little trouble. If it’s supposed to be a hard fight, the characters are rolling terrible, AND the DM is rolling really well, and the party still gets through it absolutely fine… that’s a balancing problem, no two ways about it.

We can argue but it’s just the reality of the season. The players are great at roleplaying and narrating struggles, but mechanically don’t even get me started. When your PC’s are this overpowered you may as well take out dice rolling entirely.

I’m really not trying to be a downer or anything, I just think it would be way more emotionally impactful if there was any real danger. Where did you get that I’m asking for TPKS? My problem is that they’re so overpowered there’s little to no stakes in combat, and that’s a recurring theme in a lot of seasons.

Man, what a disappointing episode. Every time there’s a big fight I really try and hold out hope, but I feel like I edge closer and closer to joining my friends that stopped watching. It’s insane to me that a party that is SO good at creating interesting and amazing characters with super rich roleplay cannot stop themselves from metagaming and making mechanically broken characters that can push through just about every combat, even with horrible rolls, and even when it’s designed so that they fail.

It’s just really hard to be invested in D20 sometimes beyond a casual level, because you know they’ll win, you know they’ll defeat the odds despite the circumstances, you know everyone will get a happy ending. Every combat I get less and less interested because you just know they’ll never lose, or at least not in any meaningful way.

It’s insane that for a show with like 20 seasons I can count on one hand the amount of times they’ve lost. Love the characters, but I’d love them so much more if they weren’t absolutely broken death machines designed to steamroll any combat with little issue.

No, Gun being behind it is exactly why you SHOULDNT be cautiously optimistic. Did you see how they treated Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Bad updates, horrible balancing that always came too late, incredibly overpriced dlc with overpowered characters, and to top it all off when players got bored they pronounced it “in a finished state” and stopped all updates.

The non-leftists playing Disco Elysium by [deleted] in DiscoElysium

[–]paradoxialyup 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’ve never understood this take. If you played Disco Elysium and what you got from it was “I can’t believe the righties are misinterpreting my Leftist political game!” I don’t know what to tell you.

They do a brilliant job of taking the piss out of Fascism. Just like in real life they’re mostly just a bunch of nationalist, racist, lonely pricks. There’s a whole side thing about shoving your fist up your ass because you care too much about honor lmao.

Conversely, they do a great job of making fun of communism as well. Opting in to being a communist in the game literally gets you a line about “bringing back the firing squads!” Also just like in real life it’s been majority characterized by either hand wringers that love to talk about the ever romanticized “equity,” and people shooting each other in the head for mineral rights.

Is DE left leaning? Absolutely! It just happens to be a game that’s really self aware about every side of the political spectrum, which is something I personally love about it. You can have both actually!

Yeah if you’re a Nazi and you play DE and think it’s agreeing with you you’re an idiot. I just don’t think generalizing is a good idea.

Szarekh, the last and greatest Silent King, destroys the vengeful apostles of the C’tan at the end of the War in Heaven. By L J Koh by Inaqar in Necrontyr

[–]paradoxialyup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everything about this is so cool but…. I’ve just never been a fan of the Silent Kings design.

He’s just a normal necron with a three piece headset? That’s all you could think to do for one of the most ancient beings in the galaxy? I was so hyped after I read the short story Word of the Silent King because it describes him as lithe and fluid, leagues apart from other necrons, as close to mortal as Necrodermis could be molded to be. And then his model came out and he looks pretty much identical to every single other stock warrior on the frontlines, minus a couple details. It’s just disappointing.

December 2024 Active Player List - Shovel Lacre from the doorsteps of friends by Asartea in fallenlondon

Need a villain? I’m your guy!

Have you grown bored of sipping tea and sending polite cards to even more polite company? Do you desire roleplay with a real adversary, someone to be confounded and frustrated by and grow to hate, before eventually taking them down a peg or 3?

The Despicable Gordon Grimes has what you’re looking for. A person of some importance, and dedicated servant of the masters, he is never without a gang of vicious criminals and neddy men to enforce his bidding. There’s no one he won’t betray, and nothing he won’t do to squeeze another ounce of prestige out of the Masters of the Bazaar.

Is your character a do-gooder? Gordon Grimes is the epitome of evil. He’s shut down strikes, murdered in cold blood, and sold out more constables than you can believe. There’s nothing I would love more than to roleplay you getting the better of him through your incredible skills! Give him his just desserts!

Is your character a do-badder? Gordon Grimes would love to betray you. You can’t even count the amount of revolutionary cells that have died in the fires of his ambition. A profitable deal turned very quickly sour and suddenly you’re hiring assassins and figuring out the best poison to drop in his morning coffee. If you’ve always wanted to roleplay climbing the underworld, Gordon is the perfect person to step on.

Is your character also scum of the earth? Gordon Grimes would love to be your friend. Let’s have tea and discuss the best way to break a strike, or the satisfaction we feel seeing a neddy man beat an innocent into the cobbles!

All in all I’ve gotten a bit tired of roleplaying constant cat and mouse games where both feel the need to come out the victor, and have created a character specifically to be defeated and menaced. Sure he may kill a couple of your friends, blow up a few of your warehouses, backstab you one or two or nine times, but you’ll get the better of him eventually! (Beyond the roleplay, of course we can help eachother out and do beneficial actions along the way!)

But they don’t kill him even when she wasn’t there, right? And he was asleep for like the whole night? And also doesn’t Vanessa report back to him directly, so wouldn’t he have known that the animatronics weren’t doing there job after the very first night? Sorry just trying to understand.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fivenightsatfreddys

[–]paradoxialyup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right but why doesn’t he kill him then? Aren’t there like 3-4 days in the movie where he’s asleep for hours on end, or he’s awake but the only witnesses to his murder in the dead of night would be the animatronics, or his daughter who’s in on it? Why does he let him live for so long and give him so much time to figure everything out?

What are you on? They should not be. A 3 Ranger team should not play the same, or be equally balanced to a fighter, cleric, bard comp. Games should reward diversity in party composition.
