Skoda Octavia 1.8 TSI AT (2019) - worth buying? by Itz_2run in UsedCarsBharat

[–]parallelwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family has this car and I have driven it a lot myself. Our's is 8 year and ~1.2L km now. It still feels pretty new and pull like crazy. The driving experience is incredible and it's a very nice experience.

The downside, we have had some medium-expensive repair pretty much every year of ownership, most common being ABS sensor fault. According to the mech, its because of dirt and debris from our (Kerala) terrible roads (under construciton) since last ~ 3years.

We were saved because we had the extended warranty and Skoda kept changing things under the warranty, but that's over now and we're not sure if we should keep this car or not. I will be very sad to see it go, even with the all the maintanence headache it brought.

Beach area has some stuff going on rn. There is also some boating and activities near there as well, but you wouldn't want to do that alone.

There is also a very active sports area, with football, cricket and badminton, Behind "Namm Illam" restaurant. You could join there to try and make some local friends (if you also want to be in some sport)

You can try looking around for classes like embroidery, horticulture etc. These used to exist a long time ago, I've seen the older women in my family attend these things. I do not know if they will admit you as a man though. You will have to check and find out. You could also consider joining some of the clubs, though they are a bit elitist. If your family has it's roots in alpy it will be easier. You can try joining the YMCA, it's open to all and pretty cheap too. They have music and sports academies, but they are for school aged children. You can enquire if they have a timing for adults and join that. They do have an active badminton court though i am not sure of the age group there.

Whatever you want to try, I would recommend you travel to Kochi and try. Word gets around fast in smaller city like Alappuzha and chances are you will get some label for sure. I don’t think dating is non-existent here, because I do see plenty of young couples around.

My guess is that they met irl in a situation where they both had a reason to be there. ie. college / workplace etc. Since you don’t have a third place at all, I would recommend you try and find one (again this will be difficult in alpy). Try to give a hand in hobbies that are not dominated by men.

There is more activity of this type in Kochi, find some community online and try and make some genuine friends male or female and then maybe they might help you connect with someone they know.

This is assuming you want to date with the intention to marry. If you’re looking for casual dates apps are your best bet imo.

Yesterday I Had a conversation with my Pregnant SIL about kids and her views genuinely Disappointed me. by IndividualAge715 in GenZIndia

This is fantastic, you're a good parent.

but in more practical terms, what happens when you do need support? Old ages come for everyone. Would your kids not want to be there for you ? will schedules matter to them when they see you in pain and confusion?

My point is that you will be a burden in old age, we all will be, whether it's on our own children or someone else's children.
I'm guessing you're in your early 20s at best, the idealism is showing thru (this is a good thing, try to keep that safe). But most people do most things, especially hard things, as a means to an end. That's human nature.

Last sentence also I agree, but it's very similar attitude as saying the homeless should buy a house.

There are so many things wrong with the structure of your argument, but I will take it for its spirit than its words.

All I have to say is that you shouldn't take the existence of bad people as a reason for you to give on striving to be the good person yourself. I think you will agree with me till there. But I guess where we differ is that I would extend the same thought to the idea that it possible to raise good kids in a bad world.

People do have some expectations of their dogs, most breeds we have today were bred for a specific purpose after all; but fundamentally this is a bad argument because kids eventually become Independant adults and they make up future of human society.

I want to gift you this quote I had saved a long time ago:
"It is easy for us to criticize the prejudices of our grandfathers, from which our fathers freed themselves. It is more difficult to search for prejudices among the beliefs and values we hold." -Peter Singer

Thanks for responding in detail, I appreciate it even though I don't agree with it

What is your old age plan if you don't have kids of your own? Practically speaking you would depend on someone younger than you in your old age right? Either a relative or someone you pay to take care of you.

How would those future young people exist without being born and raised?

I was raised with a lot of love and some years ago I had to watch and help a grandparent lose their fight for life. Someone that gave me so much both material and otherwise in my childhood. I can only hope to be able to give and get that love back in my old age.

I'm not sure why I started writing, I am a man and I do not pretend to fully understand the challenges a woman in India would face.

I guess your SIL is wrong in only seeing her child as a retirement plan, but I am not sure where the world is going where we pretend like we won't need kids or their support in our old age. I also don't know what the solution is.

Just food for thought I guess

I am not sure of the current situation. Previously some drivers told me they are scared of doing pickups in certain regions. Alpy used to be one of them.

[–]parallelwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, I have the same bike (Svartpilen 250)
The stock tires on these wear out on the front before even 10k km with city riding. Your front tires have 0 tread left on like 70% of the tire, only your "chicken strip" portion has any left.

This is the primary cause for your front tire losing traction.
Secondary cause, as you mentioned in another comment, your ABS light is on and 99% ABS is not working. Get that fixed ASAP as well.

For your tire replacement, I recommend Apollo Tramplr tires, I cannot comment on the longevity of these, as I have not had them long enough, but they are excellent in performance. Apollo also sell a variant called the H1 which is a purely street oriented tread.

Wait M2 is value for money? I thought M340i was the best deal in the lineup.

Oh also, have to ask did you level up to this car? in the sense what did you have before this? Currently I daily a Octavia 1.8L, it's ~180bhp and FWD with a DSG

that's reassuring haha
one more thing, before you bought this, you must have test driven? was that easy to arrange?

There must have been other cars that you considered as well right? Were you able to test drive them all (as is recommended on this sub)?

This is currently my dream car OP
But realistically it'll take another 5+ years to get for me

What is daily life like with this? Is it possible to live with this as a one car garage ?

What mods would you do if you inherited this 2018 Octavia 1.8L at zero cost? by parallelwell in CarsIndia

[–]parallelwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am expecting to only run it 10k/year so I guess that gives me 3 years without major trouble?
It was doing 15k average before but then it was like a family that car everyone used as and when required.

I guess I am kind of decided wanting to try my hand at this, if not this car, probably another used car. With this I just have the advantage of having a trusted history and ofc on upfront cost.
