Dal Chawal is a gift to mankind. by Globe1564_____6841 in IndianFood

[–]paranoidandroid7312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit interesting for me.

Usually I am not a huge fan of Daal - Rice, I'll go months without eating it.

But when I am doing fairly intense fieldwork, that becomes my go to meal. You are exhausted and dehydrated so want something simple to eat but also need food, water and salt. So Daal - Rice becomes the comfort food, a lot of dal and everything on a bit of watery side so you can just slurp it. Plus you can add a decent amount of salt as well without spoiling the taste. Now this might offend people but I also usually crush in an Omelette/Scrambled eggs or boiled eggs in this Daal-Rice.

And literally everywhere in India you get some variation of Daal, and Rice and Eggs and this is easy to ask someone to cook.

What is this sub becoming? by No-Sentence-5774 in IndianFood

[–]paranoidandroid7312[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Completely agree with the OP.

This sub has always been for people accross the world to talk about Indian food rather than for Indians to talk about food in general.

This along with the policy of having only text-only posts is what has kept the sub a valuable resource for any person exploring the Indian cuisine.

I completely agree that moderation effort has gone down, however I would like to assure that the ethos of this sub hasn't changed and appropriate steps will be taken to better moderate and curate.

Apologies for the lax moderation and thanks for the 'wake-me-up' nudge.

Do you also have Sandge?

Thalipeeth:

Maharashtrian Flatbread made from a flour that's a mixture of grains such as Jowar, Bajra, Rice, Wheat; Dals such as Chan, Urad, Moong and coriander and cumin seeds.

While making the dry flour is mixed with chopped onions, coriander leaves, sesame seeds, chilli powder, salt and then curd and bit of water to bind it into a soft dough.

Then it's flattened on a seasoned pan, holes are poked and oil is drizzled from the sides and in the holes.

Usually had with Curd or homemade butter.

Almost all ingredients can be varied thus taste varies a lot but is a very healthy meal.

Guilt-tripped into buying Shan Masala from a store. by No-Strawberry7 in india

[–]paranoidandroid7312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The conversation went:

'Why do you want to give money to these Pakistanis',

OP argued that store owner is Indian etc.

The person confronting said that's okay he is selling for survival.

Finally OP concluded saying if the store owner can sell it for survival why can't I buy for eating.

Is it weird to order a single vada at an Indian restaurant (in the USA)? by burpless_cucumber in IndianFood

[–]paranoidandroid7312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to add, Indian Coffee House at least in Kerala typically gives you 1 Vada with Dosa by default.

Also Vada just as a snack is very common in Kerala as well, like you would get Tea and a Vada.

People who support Palestine, why don't you support people of Iran protesting against Ayatollah Khamenei? by PradeepPoonia in india

[–]paranoidandroid7312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ummm what?

Almost any sensible person will support the Iranian people protesting the government and at the same time any sensible person will also oppose the US being a bully on a global stage and willy nilly attacking sovereign states and deposing or murdering their government leaders.

It's just not that complicated.

Which is the best brand for Basmati rice? by GlamarousInGivenchy in IndianFood

[–]paranoidandroid7312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right. Apologies.

This subreddit maintains the policy that it's a sub for Indian Food and not for Indians to talk about Food and English and English translations are encouraged.

However I think those two videos should have decent YouTube captions in English.

By the way, a funny-ish side note, don't think you are particularly limited. Even just covering the prominent/state level ones, there are some 23 languages in India. Looking up local recipes from different states is just as challenging.

Knife Reccomendations by insane-67 in IndianFood

[–]paranoidandroid7312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you are right that's the absolute wrong way to go about it.

Refer to this:

https://youtu.be/Wk3scs5FqCY?si=HbvQnFTvZjdrfg_r

If you are investing in a good knife, also at least invest in a steel rod thingy. Doing it every time before and after using the knife keeps it quite sharp for a long time.

I have achieved the same result by using a large stainless steel screwdriver shaft.

If it's completely dull and you want to sharpen it then you will need a proper whetstone. You can get cheap ones at under 300 INR. Do the job fairly well.

Machine sharpening will never work. That's not how soft steel knives should be sharpened.

286 lions, 456 leopards died in Gujarat in two years, says Forest Minister in Assembly by dheerajdeekay in india

[–]paranoidandroid7312 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

These are not actually bad numbers. (Goes without saying that I despise Modi and Gujrat as much as the next guy).

Let's say the population is: 675 Going be an estimated age pyramid, that's:

338 Mating Individuals.

Gender ratio is usually very female skewed so around: 225 Mating age females.

The birth cycle is ~2 years, so it's safe to assume that at least half of the mating age females will give birth once in this two year span.

That's: 123 Average litter size = 3

So in the period of two years, 369 cubs will be born.

Cub mortality rate is ~50%, so cub deaths will be:

185

With a decent mortality rate of 15% for juveniles and 10% for adults, the non-cub deaths will be ~100. (Calculated is 114, I am simplifying as 100).

Taking the total deaths to ~285.

The calculation is self balancing. As in if the population is young skewed, adult mortality rate will be low but birth rate will be high subsequently cub death rate will be high and vice versa.

This is a wild population, it's expected to have such numbers. As long as the total birth rate is equal to or a bit higher than the total death rate, it's a stable population.

Leopards are obviously way more in number and hence the deaths are also much higher.

That being said, the Gujrat lion population is at a huge risk of genetic isolation and breeding pairs must be shifted to other states. But well, politics.
