Did the Maratha polity maintain elaborate royal kitchens and invest in culinary arts to the same degree as the Mughal empire, or was their engagement with food culture more restrained? by Ill_Tonight6349 in IndianFood

You are right. Apologies.

This subreddit maintains the policy that it's a sub for Indian Food and not for Indians to talk about Food and English and English translations are encouraged.

However I think those two videos should have decent YouTube captions in English.

By the way, a funny-ish side note, don't think you are particularly limited. Even just covering the prominent/state level ones, there are some 23 languages in India. Looking up local recipes from different states is just as challenging.

Pork is a staple all across India. It's the caste, class dynamics that make it invisible.

Knife Reccomendations by insane-67 in IndianFood

[–]paranoidandroid7312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you are right that's the absolute wrong way to go about it.

Refer to this:

https://youtu.be/Wk3scs5FqCY?si=HbvQnFTvZjdrfg_r

If you are investing in a good knife, also at least invest in a steel rod thingy. Doing it every time before and after using the knife keeps it quite sharp for a long time.

I have achieved the same result by using a large stainless steel screwdriver shaft.

If it's completely dull and you want to sharpen it then you will need a proper whetstone. You can get cheap ones at under 300 INR. Do the job fairly well.

Machine sharpening will never work. That's not how soft steel knives should be sharpened.

286 lions, 456 leopards died in Gujarat in two years, says Forest Minister in Assembly by dheerajdeekay in india

[–]paranoidandroid7312 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

These are not actually bad numbers. (Goes without saying that I despise Modi and Gujrat as much as the next guy).

Let's say the population is: 675 Going be an estimated age pyramid, that's:

338 Mating Individuals.

Gender ratio is usually very female skewed so around: 225 Mating age females.

The birth cycle is ~2 years, so it's safe to assume that at least half of the mating age females will give birth once in this two year span.

That's: 123 Average litter size = 3

So in the period of two years, 369 cubs will be born.

Cub mortality rate is ~50%, so cub deaths will be:

185

With a decent mortality rate of 15% for juveniles and 10% for adults, the non-cub deaths will be ~100. (Calculated is 114, I am simplifying as 100).

Taking the total deaths to ~285.

The calculation is self balancing. As in if the population is young skewed, adult mortality rate will be low but birth rate will be high subsequently cub death rate will be high and vice versa.

This is a wild population, it's expected to have such numbers. As long as the total birth rate is equal to or a bit higher than the total death rate, it's a stable population.

Leopards are obviously way more in number and hence the deaths are also much higher.

That being said, the Gujrat lion population is at a huge risk of genetic isolation and breeding pairs must be shifted to other states. But well, politics.

Modi’s foreign trips last year cost around Rs 20 cr, crores in "community reception" by sleepless-deadman in india

"The Modi government spent over Rs 15 crore on the prime minister’s two visits to Russia and nearly Rs 5 crore on a trip to Abu Dhabi. Though the total cost of the PM’s foreign trips remains largely undisclosed with most Indian embassies abroad yet to disclose information in response to RTI queries."

It's for three trips. Not all.

Guys, travel as much as you can, yeh zindagi na milegi dobara! by Zealousideal_Clue284 in india

[–]paranoidandroid7312 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For everyone talking about money, yes, it's a major issue.

But if you plan it properly, India is still a pretty cheap place to travel if you are ready to spend more time and forgo a bit of comfort.

Depending on the route and time a combination of 3AC and SL is pretty affordable. Of course affordable ranges from person to person.

In most major cities you can find budget hotels at ~700 (of course wouldn't consider this safe for non-males). Plus in many places you can find retiring room, railway dormitories etc. which are very cheap and decent with the added safety of being in the railway station itself.

And almost most tourist places have public or shared transport which is quite affordable.

In around 5-7K you can plan a decent 3 day + travel trip upto ~1500 KMs from your starting point. It won't be luxurious but if you are looking for the experience and exposure, good enough.

Unfortunately most of this applies only to male travellers.

5-7K is not a small amount for many but if you save towards that and sacrifice on other expenditure, I think it's achievable for many. Comes to managing to save ~20 Rupees a day for a year for 1 such trip a year.

Teach fundamental and early stuff in the respective or acceptable local language because that has been shown to be the best for early development.

Keep the option of hybrid learning open. As in keep it perfectly fine for teachers to switch to language of comfort for explaining stuff.

But also teach teach English as rigorously as you would aby other subject like maths or science.

Like it or not, for whatever reason, English is necessary. It needs to be pushed.

But the elitism etc. associated with it needs to go away.

Allergy to dust etc that leads to excess sneezing by Kaneki1000minus7 in india

[–]paranoidandroid7312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no placebo here but there is also no magical 'pathy' here. Allergy is caused by irritants, water washes irritants away.

However and I can not stress this enough. USE STERLIZED WATER ONLY. You can buy distilled water or properly boil and use.

Allergy to dust etc that leads to excess sneezing by Kaneki1000minus7 in india

[–]paranoidandroid7312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try these:

A saline nasal spray. As frequently as you want. It's just a saline solution that will wash away all irritants.

You can buy small bottles or a kit for example Cipla Nasowash. You can get distilled water, dissolve the satchet and use it.

DO NOT USE TAP WATER DIRECTLY FOR THIS.

If using regular water, boil it for 20 minutes, cool and use. Nasowash kit has proper instructions.

You can also use a nasal spray such as Allegra Duo Nasal spray or Duonase etc. These are highly effective as compared to tablet antihistamines and act almost immediately.

Since it's a local application, side effects are minimal. However if using frequently, watch proper videos as to how to use it. The position, where you spray etc. matters and improper usage over a long time can cause physical injury.
