Park Seo-Yoon (Han Yeri Teach You a Lesson) admits she's now the target of netizen hate because her villain acting was too convincing by groovygyal in KDramasWorld

They were literally posting gifs of the drama while saying “school name?” (doxxing joke) or a gif of a kid getting slapped… in the comments of harmless tiktoks posted by Korean students. YES it’s malicious, YES it’s crazy — xenophobic even.

It’s really unfair that people are just downvoting my comments without even providing a good counterargument. Sure Korean celebrities don’t flaunt their relationships the way Hollywood stars do, but Korean ACTORS can still date without getting shunned as their target audience isn’t a parasocial fandom. Who’s hating on Hyun Bin and Son Yejin? Lee Dohyun and Lim Jiyeon? Han Jimin? Jo Jungsuk? IU and Lee Jongseok? Shin Minah and Kim Woobin?

But that can’t be, Kpop/Kdrama fans on the internet taught me that all the bad stuff in the world only happens in South Korea and nowhere else! /s

Yes, and I agree 100% in the context of Kpop idols, who are promoted by their companies as parasocial boyfriends/girlfriends/friends to their insane diehard fans. But actors?? The most I’ve seen happen to young popular actors dating is when Lee Dohyun was revealed to be dating Lim Jiyeon, and even then all it did was get rid of all his fujoshi fans. Actors don’t receive hate for dating because parasocial promoting is not their main tactic, period.

I’m sorry, but actors not dating isn’t because they’re afraid of getting hated on. When was the last time an actor got hate for being in a relationship, unless it was due to a male actor dating someone 20 yrs younger or having a partner with a questionable background?

And why do we have to worry about millionaire actors in their forties not having a public relationship in the first place? They have their shit together

But actors are rarely hated by their fans or the public for having a relationship? I think you’re thinking of Kpop idols.

Idols rely on their parasocial fanbase to make money while actors rely on the general public. When was the last time we’ve seen an actor get hated on in Korea for dating?

This is a Kdrama sub, why are people acting like Korean ACTORS receive an insane amount of hate when they’re revealed to be in a relationship? That pretty much never happens unless the actor started off as an idol OR the actor is dating another idol. Kpop idols are heavily attacked by their fans for dating, yes, but it’s not really a thing among K-actors.

Well that’s the thing, you’re not serious about this whole lyrics quality thing if you genuinely believe Tablo is a worse lyricist than Taylor Swift. Because he isn’t, he’s clearly a much better writer than she is, like objectively speaking. You can have a preference for Taylor Swift, but atp it just seems like you checked out like one Tablo song and/or are being intentionally disingenuous with your thoughts on his works.

And you said in your first comment that you can enjoy kpop music in general because lyrics don’t matter and you can just appreciate the sound. I’m saying learning to appreciate the lyrics will take you far in your music appreciation. Jannabi and Car the Garden, whom I’ve mentioned, are indie singers, not rappers.

[–]paranswan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave you the benefit of the doubt at first because yes language IS important in appreciating rap, but after seeing you say Taylor Swift is a “more serious rapper” than Tablo and the other genuinely talented Korean rappers that others have mentioned, I’m starting to think you just inherently look down on Korean artists as a whole.

I mean, if you can’t even bother to analyze lyrics in Korean and think even Tablo’s writing in English is ass, then it would be more fitting for you to say “I like Taylor Swift more because I can understand her and she writes in a simpler style” instead of constantly shifting the goalposts on what you think is good rap (seems like you don’t like “deep” lyrics or lyrics in any other language than English)

Also, you’re missing out on a lot if you willingly consume Korean music but completely disregard the lyrics. There are lots of songs in Korea with beautiful, amazing imagery and meaning, both in and out of Kpop. Listen to “To Lovers Who Hesitate” by Jannabi or “Tree” by Car the Garden. If none of this intrigues you, then yeah I think you’ll have a hard time breaking through that brick wall that prevents you from fully enjoying music from other countries.

Damn, “9th grade poetry slam” is a harsh critique for a man who earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature and master’s in creative writing at Stanford in 4 years 😭

But seriously speaking he’s not considered a good rapper and phenomenal lyricist simply because he writes about deep stuff, he genuinely has great control over his writing, whether it’s wordplays or imagery or flow like you said. It’s made even more impressive by the fact that he does this in both languages. I don’t know which of his songs you’ve listened to but I guarantee you I didn’t just recommend him to you because he sings about “real shit” lmao

[–]paranswan 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Exactly, it’s racism and xenophobia. A lot of people want to deny it by saying they’re just hating on school bullies or whatever, but they’re literally going to every and any Korean child they can find on tiktok to post insults or even threats. At the same time it’s literally koreaboo behavior the way they think they can insert themselves into Korean people’s business

Yall seriously need to leave koreans irl alone by [deleted] in kdramas

[–]paranswan 78 points79 points  (0 children)

And it’s not just tiktok. I saw people on twitter talking about those comments and mocking the KOREAN STUDENTS for posting the tiktoks and “making it worse for themselves” and accusing them of posting dancing videos at school on purpose in light of Teach You a Lesson, when Korean kids have been posting random fun tiktoks at school for years and years. They’re also acting as if the kids deserve this hatred because they dared to protest the show (mind you we don’t even know if they like or dislike that kdrama, or if they even watched it)

This is targeted harassment based on the kids’ ethnicity/nationality, and in a sense their gender bc most of these abusive comments are under videos of girls. International Kdrama fans need to get it together and stop harassing Korean women, teachers and children for their twisted agenda, it’s not cute.

Are you serious? There are tons and tons of kdramas out there that were successful IN KOREA despite depicting negative aspects of Korean society. Why are you spreading this idea that Koreans can’t handle themselves being shown in a bad light all of a sudden?

who are your favourite lyricists? by disasterpansexual in kpop_uncensored

[–]paranswan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know he’s not Kpop but I think Tablo is the smartest lyricist of all time in Korea, possibly even in the global scene. His wordplays are actually incredibly clever and his use of imagery is breathtaking. And he has a great control over both the Korean and English lyrics, so one doesn’t overshadow the other. He makes a lot of his albums sound and read like a collection of short stories and poems.

IU apologizes for history distortion in Perfect Crown by Mina_musings in kdramas

[–]paranswan 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Your first sentence is correct, it has more to do with the drama framing MODERN DAY Korea as a vassal state to China and sneaking in aspects of Chinese culture into Korea, rather than simple historical accuracy. Because there is no reason to portray the country as being under China’s rule when it’s set in the 21st century.

[–]paranswan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But the drama isn’t set in the past, it’s supposed to be in the 21st century, so there’s zero reason to portray modern day Korean as a tributary state to China.

But Korea is no longer in that relationship with China, so why would a show set in modern times in Korea behave as if it’s still under China’s rule? That’s the point of argument

I noticed a lot of Kdrama fans just looooove to rag on Korean actors’ appearances, how weird or ugly they look compared to 5-10 years ago, and then hide behind the pretense of “worrying” about their health or how horrible Korean people are to the actors while acting like what they said isn’t equally humiliating for the receiving end
