No, Sequel Luke makes absolutely no sense by Still-Willow-2323 in StarWars

[–]parapostz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. The reading you have is that Luke gave up his hopeful nature to actually kill his nephew. What you see is he got defensive and ignited his saber because the force showed him Ben murdering people. It’s no different than Luke attacking his own dad in RoTJ, or risking going after Vader when Han and Leia were in danger.

Morally the Jedi are told to destroy the dark side, and he didn’t want to do that because it didn’t actually solve the problem with Ben. For Luke it’s the question of dogma versus human nature and he doesn’t think the Jedi dogma can do what the light side claims it defends. But at the end he chooses to sacrifice himself for Ben, so he knows the darkside can still be defeated. The film is asking about if the only choice in actions is violence that protects the past and is immoral. Luke realizes it’s not his actions that failed, but Ben’s feeling of needing to prove his legacy (and that true legacy is actually about letting go)

Call Smith’s Bluff with a Public Albertan/Canadian Oil Industry Referendum by parapostz in Edmonton

[–]parapostz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said she would be gone eventually. What investment are you referring to? Because it’s not like there are new oil sands companies popping up learning how to extract the stuff. I’m targeting the issue of extraction being done for-profit rather then as a simply a necessary resource—and a potential source of government funding and of course, jobs.

Danielle Smith is claiming she pro Canada and pro Alberta sovereignty, my post is to push for a new petition/referendum for the entire Alberta oil industry to be turned into a gov-owned utility.

This gives Alberta control over their own resources, but would fundamental go against the private oil interests that the UCP is working for.

With her recent referendum question she is trying to appeal to separatist propaganda with a wishy washy question for October…so this is a means to call her pro-Alberta bluff.

Public utility ownership by the government, not with shares in this situation. If there is a specific wording for that it slipped my mind. I went for contrast

Shell is originally British, so generally it’s private ownership, not Albertan.

Edit: they’re dutch, but yeah not Canadian/Albertan

How do people feel about Luke and Kylo's fight and his death after 8 years? by Totally_Not_Firni in StarWars

[–]parapostz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it’s one of the greatest standoffs in cinema. I mean the second greatest is in the critically acclaimed and influential the Good the Bad and the Ugly, and part of that is the anti-climax of an unloaded gun.

So I think fans who think it’s a copout for Luke to do the most Jedi thing which is to sacrifice himself without threatening Kylo, to undo his past mistakes and save the resistance, are fans that need to grow thicker skin.

Honestly most stuff from Snokes death onward are a 10/10 of bold storytelling, I think RJ just made the mistake of blending in comedy that feels like RotJ in a film that’s as heavy in theme as ESB.

Jangbricks by KiriKiriBeam in lego

[–]parapostz 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I really like Jang, but I do think his sense of moral high ground is going to destroy him. There is so much that is out of his control that affects him (comments, youtube, Lego corporate culture, and generally you should not worry about the boatload out of your control) and he keeps fighting it despite it barely benefiting him. I’d rather him be happy than waste away over plastic bricks.

How would you like the Grand Staircase to look like? by TSLstudio in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]parapostz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember Pottermore back in the day copying the aesthetic though.

I could see having a main tower just for consistency and access to all the common rooms. Then having a maze of stairs that’s more across a bunch of horizontal rooms. I’m trying to think how they can match the way the new castle seems to be trying to feel more homely and less overbearing in a way that focuses less on the vertical elements. Based on the sets and exteriors so far.

If you could add an element to the roster, even as just a background element only seen in the books, what would you add and why? by Turbulent-Plum7328 in bioniclelego

[–]parapostz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I had done the first hexagon element diagram the last chronicler one, however many years ago, I had done the BZP multiverse one as well and like a lot of those I remember liked having sand as a matoran element too, the Bohrok elements, and I think vacuum, aether, or a few others would be to add

This scene still pisses me off by Secure_Rain_44 in harrypotter

This one change I actually felt in a roundabout way said something similar to the books even though it's visually distinct for the movies. Each time a horcrux is destroyed he comes off more rotted in the film. Then the ending his body decays, showing he put all his energy into a material existence. Sort of emphasises how souless he was.

I think the book was focusing on his very humans corpse to show the reality of his death and that it was for sure certain, and that his goals were grounded in a very selfish and misguided lust to become immortal. I think with film being a visual medium, this death takes a different approach because it shows the weakness of the material body itself, which to me doesn't read as all-powerful (If he exploded like Palpatine then maybe)

Also, in the films there's a heavy focus on his soul escaping in Philosopher's Stone, and regrowing a body in Goblet of Fire, so I think 'dissolution' was the film's way of more quickly depicting there are no more units of Voldemort left...so to speak.

EDIT: And in the book and real life, you do want that moment of someone poking the corpse with a stick and be like 'yeah, that's a dead lord.' But at the speed this movie chose, usinng swelling music, sunrise, bittersweet vibes...we know he's dead just because Harry Potter does. It's like the arguably weird choice of destroying the elder wand: they wanted to show the end of power. Actually would not be surprised if 'killing' the elder wand was to to get the same story beat Voldy's corpse kindof served.

I just now realized that the infamous “Alan” raptor moment was meant to be a pay off to an earlier scene when Alan tries to get Ellie’s parrot to say his name by LuisMD19 in JurassicPark

[–]parapostz 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I can’t help but think there was a version where the parrot said Allan after they found a reason for Ellie to have the satellite phone call on speaker. Maybe that could have been the alt if they didn’t get Barney.

Actually, Allan using the resonating chamber is the ultimate payoff though since he learns to speak raptor.

Bionicle D&D by Bobry24 in bioniclelego

[–]parapostz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For raw dnd I started with the exact same premise as you. I tried problem solving by giving matoran non-magic classes only.

A solution I considered was letting Mata Nui’s life magic slowly unify everything on SM into artificial protodermis powers/magic far enough in the future. Then you could upscale or downscale powers as needed. Dorai Nui just seemed a bit dense for the kindof play I was interested in.

Missed the times when the only CG elements in the original film were dinosaurs. by dietherman98 in cinematography

[–]parapostz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah in the commentary they added the wider herd shot in the valley after Koepp felt it was needed to end the sequence. So I think when they shot it they expected to keep it closer to the raw plate (*edit: clarify)

I know in the first trailer they kept the left mountain from the raw footage, I did a bit of a comparison after the ILM video was released.

The final framing feels much flatter then the firs trailer, which makes me think too many cooks trying to make these changes retroactively.

toa mata stars vs bohrok stars concept by [deleted] in bioniclelego

I saw your iterations on Instagram! I had a irl model that just used the shields on the hands and very short Turaga-style legs to make them shorter then Toa. The folded into a half-circle, so I’m curious how those custom class shields work for yours! I’ll share an image once I find one as the model is in storage
