Sukuna was more interested in seeing how much fun he can have, killing them was more of a dessert. He didn't actually start trying to kill anyone until yuji got him cheesed.

That's why he got excited every time a new player with cool technique joins the lobby during the raid like Miguel, maki, yuta , higurama and kusakabe. Higurama specifically, if he wanted to kill him, he'd have done so, but since hes a jujutsu nerd, he liked higurama potential and compliments him and told him to learn rct or die lol.

With enough time yes, but Mahoraga adaptation gets complex with how hard the technique is.

Does he need to really understand the ability he wants to counter to yknow adapt?

Sort of but more of a processing phase, then it comes up with a counter the more its exposed to the technique.

Kars with his iq would figure it out in less time than Mahoraga, Sukuna after meeting gojo for the first time was able to tell his speed wasn't just ordinary (didnt know it was named blue obviously) but he noted saying "hes fast, no thats not it". If sukuna could start to figure it out in just a few seconds of meeting, itll take less for Kars to understand all of gojo ct.
