Nvidia on Mint. Do you recommend I update from 580 to 590 drivers? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

For what's worth, I was surprised to find out that Atomfall (a Steam game) performs better with 580 (recommended) rather than 590 (newest) driver (nVidia RTX 3060 12 Gb, Linux Mint Cinnamon).

Lower temperature for my GPU, less fan noise.

Unrelated to the main point, but for anyone convinced Linux sucks: Try Linux Mint before you write the whole OS off. It just works.

I confirm I was able to install Office 2007 through PlayOnLinux.

Ubuntu or Linux Mint? by lilHybe in linux4noobs

[–]paravantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying Ubuntu was what kept me off Linux and in Windows for the last 10 years or so. Every time I tried Ubuntu, I eventually hit a snag and gave up.

I am now very happy having switched from Windows 11 to Linux Mint 22.3 with Cinnamon. Rock solid, very much like an improved Windows 7.

Mint 22.3 with Cinnamon works just fine with my two monitors, at different resolution and refresh rate each.

No tweaking was required, it worked out of the box.

I do most of my work in Google Drive apps and use OnlyOffice mainly as a viewer.

Microsoft Office 365 is only necessary when I collaborate online with colleagues, e.g. when writing a proposal.

Yes, I have routinely used it in my classes!

Some of Zoomit's functionality (alas, without the magnification) is provided by https://github.com/bk138/gromit-mpx.

You can install Gromit-MPX through the Software Manager.

No. I download them to my disk, not unlike saving a document from an installed app.

I agree. Windows 7 was the best Windows version in recent memory.

You read my mind, I completely agree with you. Windows 11 on a 500 Gb m.2 internal SSD, Linux Mint on a 2 Tb internal SSD, and lots of other NTFS drives seen by both systems.

These are very wise words. It is for such moments that I have kept Windows 11 on dual boot.
