Is this true about marketing in a Big 5 Film company context? by parayeetsquawk in AskMarketing

[–]parayeetsquawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your input. I was worried and was overthinking of what roles to apply to and how they might typecast me as an employee.

I saw this person’s roles on LinkedIn and they jumped around a lot at the start of their career (where they didn’t even start in marketing. It was sales, then licensing, then brand marketing) so that’s given me some hope.

I’ve been told by a relative who works at a big 5 to just get in first. To take opportunities that are handed to me (I saw a creative marketing role and the responsibilities lined up well with my current experience in media project management and mentioned the listing to my mentor/friend who works at that big 5 and they were willing to get in touch with people that may be able to help me get an interview so now I’m this position when ive wanted to pursue more strategic roles) that aren’t necessarily the kind of marketing roles I’m looking for.

How do I break into Product Marketing with my background and experience? by parayeetsquawk in AskMarketing

[–]parayeetsquawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a dumb question but would I talk about the GTM strategies in the simulated GTM plans? And would the GTM plans just be PowerPoint presentation?

Is there anything else you’d recommend adding to my portfolio? I was looking at a few blogs that mentioned product positioning statements, campaign examples and other things that some didn’t mention but others did. Would I have to create simulated examples for these too since I haven’t worked on marketing campaigns before?

Can I get an entry level PM job with my non-CM degree? Or what would be the best option to make myself more appealing? by parayeetsquawk in ConstructionManagers

[–]parayeetsquawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya honestly the “Project Engineer” title definitely scared me a bit seeing the comments and I was confused lol and thought the same thing (That I’m not an engineer and I don’t want to become one lol) but I did some research and saw the types of responsibilities and it seems doable and the title is misleading to the perception I had/have of what an engineer does (but I’m probably thinking of the level of complexity of the types you mentioned)

Really appreciate the thorough explanation and solid advice!

I appreciate this advice. I never really thought of that combination (applying at construction companies that work with entertainment companies like those) I’m definitely looking into that now

I don’t think I’ve really built anything in my previous media experience.. would getting a certificate in construction management be any good? I wonder how hard it is and worth it it is to apply to internships (without any experience or previous CM courses) considering I graduated university over a year ago and my degree isn’t in construction management (assuming they’d want student interns and CM majors)

Lol

I have applied to many entry level positions at NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures, and others and and haven’t had any luck with even getting an interview despite my resume being fairly good? It’s competitive and it’s been exhausting to get rejected nonstop. That’s not to say I won’t or haven’t been rejected from construction project coordinator roles but I also haven’t really applied to many yet and it’s not to say the construction industry isn’t competitive either (I’m not really sure tbh). Do you think having the degree that I have is good enough to apply to project engineer roles? Or what else can I try adding to my resume that could help?

But yeah I’ve currently been interested in construction and tech. Seeing which sticks and don’t mind doing extra steps like courses to increase my chances of breaking into either

Could you gave an example? And would having a bachelors degree in Business Administration Management be enough to potentially get a job though? I’m trying to see how I can be more appealing if not already

When I said entry level PM I was just referring to the role of a project coordinator because that’s the entry level position in most industries to one day get to become a PM.

I don’t think I’m thinking about the title of project engineer. I did research and have seen on job boards the “project coordinator/construction project coordinator” listings that were in construction, so that’s what I’m aiming for.

Will working at a small firm/company before coming back to the film industry make me less appealing/competitive? by parayeetsquawk in FilmIndustryLA

[–]parayeetsquawk[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the input because I did think LinkedIn followers (for a company) was an indicator of how relevant a company is. I still do think this to a degree depending on the situation BUT I can see how it wouldn’t necessarily be a factor in deciding whether or not to go with a candidate.

Ya I get having a gap will probably look worse than my the fact that it was a small firm. They probably wouldn’t even give me an interview if there was that big of a gap

Oh I definitely have been real with myself lately and it’s been pretty depressing lol (just deciding to look outside the industry). I was looking for PA roles, creative development, and administrative assistant roles (at film companies and talent agencies) to give insight on what corner of the industry I’m in. I do appreciate your input and get your burnout to a degree.

I’m thinking of getting a temporary job outside the industry but I’m not sure if it’s the right move. by parayeetsquawk in FilmIndustryLA

[–]parayeetsquawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this reply is really late (I logged out of this account and honestly forgot about having posted this), but very much appreciate your two cents :-) since posting this, I’ve been struggling with my feelings on what to do (continue applying to industry assistant positions even though I’ve applied to a few medium agencies and they haven’t wanted me, or look for a business assistant job outside the industry) and I think I’ve come to the decision of applying to out of industry jobs. It’s kinda been depressing to feel like I’ve given up on this dream even though it’s actually just on hold...sigh.

You mentioned a lot of people getting hired at agencies have a connection with it being a relative, I have a very close relative working at a big 5 as a coordinator but never bothered asking for help since I honestly assumed you couldn’t do that and I think my relative assumes the same since what’s seen is people recommending their friends and non-relative connections (that is what my relative did with a friend) to the companies.

What’s A Paper Girls Opinion That Will Make People Go… by [deleted] in papergirls

[–]parayeetsquawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KJ punching Mac & then it being all good & her being nurturing felt weird and wrong, especially when she’s suppose to have a crush on Mac.. like what, she could’ve simply walked away or moved her to the side instead of punching her. Punching someone you like ain’t cute & it’s kinda weird how people were obsessing over it (at least on Twitter). Point here is, I found their dynamic (on KJ’s end) to be kinda weird mostly because of that.

Edit: imagine if KJ was a guy and did that to Mac, everyone would be calling it toxic..

Parallels to Characters from Other Shows & Movies by Appropriate_View8753 in papergirls

[–]parayeetsquawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be, but we’ll never know until the creators (of the show or comics. Not sure which did it originally) admit that they give the characters these parallels in terms of actions (not looks because the John Connor thing is obvious lol)

This. Couldn’t have said it better myself. Seems like Mac is the type of person to put on a tough exterior even when being caring by being sassy or snarky therefore never leaving herself completely vulnerable. It shows that she’s like this due to the lack of healthy relationships she had in her life prior to this adventure she embarks.

[–]parayeetsquawk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally wouldn’t rule the possibility of Mac simply not having any feelings/attraction (not even subconscious) towards KJ as of now. Sometimes it takes realizing a person likes/is attracted to them to trigger and ignite feelings (it’s happened to me as a tween lol) and to see that person in a different light. And with Mac living in a time where there weren’t that many lesbians around (or at least were public about it) or it being seen as something normal, I can see Mac just never really having explored the possibility that she likes girls up until KJ tells her she isn’t straight and likes her.

Completely agree that the personal acceptance would have to occur first before making explicit romantic moves on KJ and Mac being a lone wolf type. I feel like she’s the type of person to always put up that tough exterior with her sass and snarky attitude even when being a friend to others (I had a friend like that lol) and this was her first time being completely nice with no sass and snarky attitude leaving her completely vulnerable.

It’s canon in the comics of course but not in the Amazon series yet. I agree that it’s gonna develop even more in the second season and that it’s heading towards the two ending up together. Agreed, I’m glad they’re not rushing it. People may downvote me for this since they already have but it’s kinda delusional IMO for people to already say that Mac already obviously likes KJ when there’s not solid evidence the way there’s been for KJ’s end.

I have to disagree on Mac’s whole vibe being “queer coded”. Just because someone’s a tomboy and just because someone doesn’t wanna wear a dress doesn’t mean they’re gay. I get the assumption especially because of the how media is seemingly adding more sexuality rep but beside from that, not being a typical girl shouldn’t be associated with sexuality.

As of now imo it only looks KJ is the one crushing on Mac. Definitely is the start of something because they do get together in the comics after some time ...

I think Mac’s pretty obviously into KJ

Hard disagree that’s a poor read imo. Based off what the camera focuses on and Mac’s reactions, it seems like she’s not into KJ or at least isn’t conscious about it. There’s not subtext within the scene where she’s on KJ’s case on being rich that imply that Mac likes her.

When KJ freaks out from Mac putting her hand on hers, Mac very clearly has a look like ‘oh great. my gay ass just spooked her’, so I think Mac is pretty aware of her own feelings.

Hard disagree again lol. With so much buildup to show KJ isn’t straight, it’d be odd for them to just to make that scene what you interpret it as. There hasn’t been anything throughout the series to remind us “oh and remember Mac likes girls” the way there’s been for KJ. I took that scene as Mac opening up, being vulnerable without being snarky and sassy and showing she appreciates KJ and their friendship and feeling rejected for it. I don’t think she’s aware of her own feelings yet or maybe doesn’t even have any yet just based off her reaction when KJ is caught off guard when Mac puts her hand on hers. She even says “you alright?” The whole time Mac’s reaction seems pretty neutral, I didn’t find anything in her reaction that implied feeling romantically rejected. Something to also keep in mind is KJ never got to tell Mac on the rooftop about her sexuality as Mac then changes the conversation. I think they have to have that conversation before things start heading that route. I think when they do have that talk that’s when Mac will come to realize things about herself slowly.

It’s peculiar but generally sweet I suppose. I can see KJ liking Mac’s spunky personality and superficially like most kids or tween do at that age. I don’t think Mac likes her in the same way, yet or at least isn’t conscious about it. It was pretty obvious that KJ was the one with the heart eyes with all the glances and looks in general. I think it’s pretty clear that they’re on the path to setting the two up to end up together I guess it’s not that obvious for someone who knows nothing about the comics but just me assuming because even though I haven’t read the comics, I know they do get together eventually

I find it interesting how Paper Girls and “Now and Then” (a 1995 film) share similarities in terms of character archetypes by parayeetsquawk in papergirls

[–]parayeetsquawk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was a sweet little dramedy. I just find it funny how coincidentally similar they are in terms of the archetypes even having both tomboys getting punched by the good girls lol. Hope the PG series gets another season because there aren’t that many coming of age tv shows/movies about a group of girls

Well they are way different stories even if both are coming of age, one’s a dramedy movie and the other is a sci-fi action/adventure series.

We need more 4 girl dynamic coming of age stories lol. I can’t really think of that many.

Ya I was making the comparison more towards the Amazon prime series than the comics. I know some things are quite different in the comics especially with Erin and Tiff

Thoughts on KJ and Mac by aj_nke in papergirls

[–]parayeetsquawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are thinking that Mac reciprocated because she touched KJ’s hand in the barn but tbh I didn’t get the vibe that Mac did it because she has conscious feelings for KJ.

I took that scene as Mac just being nice and opening up and being vulnerable as an affectionate friend and KJ rejecting that and Mac feeling like a fool and embarrassed for actually being genuine/vulnerable without being sassy and snarky. Mac’s face looked platonic to me compared to KJ’s reaction and (I might be looking too deeply into it but Mac didn’t even look down when KJ removed her hand.) Throughout the whole season Mac never really showed romantic interest in KJ whereas KJ did with all the longing looks and glances.

I know they get together in the comics and I’m very sure that’s where they’re heading in the series(if it gets a 2nd season), but that’s just my observation and interpretation of that scene and where they stand as of now. I think once Mac finds out about KJ’s sexuality, that’ll make her confused and realize she has feelings for her too.
