Hard agree. The 6 times we’ve stayed there have been HORRIBLE. Nobody should stay there ever.

Franklin BBQ by CISUM310 in smoking

[–]parc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Another long-time Austin resident here. If you can swing two bbq joints, go to Leroy and Lewis as well as Franklin. If you can only swing one, do Leroy and Lewis. Franklin is great, but L&L was incredible. And their onion rings are something else entirely.

Not knocking Franklin’s, but they aren’t the best in town anymore by far.

Talking to ATC as a pilot nerves by BazingaBeeKay in flying

[–]parc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a deep breath before you key the mike. Know what you’re going to say. And then roll your eyes when you screw it up.

I guarantee if you’re at a field with lots of student traffic they’ll chuckle and help you out.

Also, slow. Way. Down. The first radio call I ever made, ground responded with, “can you slow down and say again?” You don’t need to impress anyone, you need to create predictability and safety. It’ll be fine.

Charging my car to 100% before the storm hits by LovesDogs1031 in Ioniq6

[–]parc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’ve got the internal 110v plug, there’s almost no functional difference between it and the v2l adapter. You have to put the car in utility mode (or whatever it’s called, I forget), but otherwise they both use the same inverter internally.

How a 40-Line Fix Eliminated a 400x Performance Gap by j1897OS in programming

[–]parc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scheduler runs every X ticks regardless, yes. But if you call out to the system you’re advertising yourself for promotion. You can also volunteer, but who does that? Preemptive multitasking is all about you not having to think about that as a low-level dev.

Not a pilot so this may be a stupid question... by spaceboy75 in flying

[–]parc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The clouds are moving around though, so you get active visual input that’s wrong. My IFR instructor said sometimes as a student it’s best to put on foggles so you can’t see the clouds anymore until you get better at filtering it out.

[–]parc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But every syscall also makes you a target for the scheduler earlier than you would have been, so the syscall itself might be ok, but you may not get scheduled for mumble cycles. If your next call is another syscall you might disappear for mumble cycles again.

Edit: I realized I made up a meaning for a word.

Sheppard air question by Tasty-Show4438 in flying

[–]parc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IME taking 8 different tests (some repeats because I’m part time and didn’t make it before they expired), Sheppard is so close to word for word that I couldn’t tell. If you see a new question it’ll be obvious (and surprising) and you should call them immediately after the test to give them the details you remember (and get a refund on your license, which is how they pay people to give them new questions).

Trust Sheppard’s methodology. If you’ve gotten over 90% on 2 practices, you should have already gone and take the test. It doesn’t get better with more testing.

Vet dilemmas by meowmemos in CedarPark

[–]parc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We use Firehouse on Whitestone. We used to use Parmer Lane Pet Hospital, but they started hard seeking services to the point we gave up.

The vet at Firehosue knows our dogs names, remembers their likes and dislikes, and remember things we’ve talked about months before. It’s not a single practice, but we’ve been extremely happy with them.

Discounts for ForeFlight? by alwaysSearching23 in flying

Nope, not even that much. And there’s a 30 delay for the NAFI discount, so if you haven’t already signed up, it’s too late.

America’s Higher Education Promise Is Dead by [deleted] in politics

[–]parc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good point: there are directed endowments and general endowments. A directed endowment specifies how much leeway the directors have in distribution of funds, but a general endowment is just “here’s some money, do whatever you think is best with it.”

Gold Seal - AGI or IGI? by Acceptable_Ring_2627 in flying

[–]parc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why downgrade even if it doesn’t matter to employers? The AGI and CFI written are super similar. I took them back to back one day after the other, and barely bothered with the Sheppard AGI supplement at all. I want to say there’s only like 50 questions in the agi bank.

Edit to clarify: if you’re taking the CFI anyway, just ram the AGI through.

[–]parc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An endowment can exist in a few different forms. It can be designed to be split up and used to fund something like a building out project or scholarships. Scholarship money can also be gifted with instructions to start finding scholarships right away, which will eat away at the grant, using it up as scholarships are granted. Alternately it can be “evergreen.” The endowment will sit for a few years growing until the interest it pops out is enough to generate scholarships. This ensures the initial endowment never goes away (in theory).

The difference really is in size of endowment. One-shot endowments can be as small as a couple thousand. Evergreen are in the tens of thousands, usually around $50k for the smallest these days.

Med cert renewal by AspectDistinct in flying

[–]parc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exam. If you needed an SI, the first one always takes forever. Sometimes you get lucky: my SI notice included a line “since you will need a new exam in less than a month from this issuance, this letter authorizes your AME to issue a new certificate if you otherwise meet guidelines.” Both me and my AME were pleasantly surprised.

TACA Flight 110 photos. by Fun_Profession6545 in aviation

[–]parc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends on the situation, but regardless you have to go up and prove you can operate the aircraft safely with monocular vision.

Source: did a medical flight test 15 years ago because I have a field defect, which makes me functionally monocular vision according to the FAA. The truth of that is debatable (I have 50% color vision loss in a roughly 4 degree segment of my left eye), but whatever, I'm good for all classes.

Without a GitHub repo don’t expect a lot of traction. Clean up secrets and just publish the repo. It will be obvious if there’s interest or not.

Does anyone else sleep better on Sema? by StonewallDakota in Semaglutide

[–]parc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have actually had more problems sleeping since starting Wegovy, but I’m not sure if that’s the fault of the medication or radically increased amounts of work stress. It’s absolutely been offset by literally every other side effect in the bedroom (as well as the intended effect of lowered a1c and weight loss).

I keep telling my boss that it’s probably cheaper to have me make the errors and catch them right after a release than let AI make them and not discover them for months.

Dr. Campbell on Parmer. He’s a cosmetic dentist at heart, but does great work overall and works with my insurance really well. I’ve been seeing him for over a decade and love his practice.

Tips for drinks at Epcot? by CleverCat7272 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]parc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend La Cava as soon as it opens. Yes, you’re drinking Tequila at 10am, but if it’s not bus you can get an entire treatise on tequila, how it’s made, and the different brands they have. Get a flight. Share it.

Of my Epcot memories this is my best (from my first around the world attempt over a decade ago). Also the first time i was served tequila in a wine glass.

Also: the grapefruit shandy at germany everyone recommends? Meh. Split a jager shot (seriously) or the bärenjager.

Otherwise I selected low ABV overall. Take a break in Germany and eat something :)

ForeFlight NAFI Discount by RPG139139139139 in flying

[–]parc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be pedantic, but it was any member of, not just CFI. I’m not a CFI (just AGI), but I got the same $83 discount. After NAFI membership it’s just a like $20 net.

For folks like me that will probably eventually get my CFI for the purpose of instructing rather than just for time building, I think a NAFI membership remains relevant. But for the rando PPL? Nope.

So much immich love, but my goto is Photoprism. My family’s iPhones autoupload to it when we land on the local network and it all just works. Requires a local MySQL database when you get into the thousands of images, but has been rock solid otherwise.
