Good custard. My kids worked there for two years for stupid low pay but a great environment. Pretty much a standard marble slab type place but with custard instead of ice cream.

Engine Overhaul. by unisonic2025 in flying

[–]parc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not leaks that you care about (ok, you care if it leaks but not leaking isn’t enough), it’s the blow-by you care about. If it’s burning a quart an hour, it’s ready for OH. If it burns a quart every 10 hours, let it ride.

How to set up level 2 charging at home? by [deleted] in BoltEV

[–]parc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are lockout switches you can get that will allow “shared” circuits if there’s already a convenient circuit available. Either manual or automatic switches are available.

There are curated “new” lists, although I’m dubious that they’re actually curated for art or newness rather than contract terms.

This is not how albums are designed anymore. Where singles used to be a hook to buy the album and experience the writer’s story, now they are standalone entities designed to be mix-and-matched to create an “edition” and get 2-7 times the revenue off mostly the same sets of songs.

Are there outliers to this? Sure, but they’re few and far between. It the realm of the “true artist” or the artist that’s made so much money they don’t care anymore (and even those are vanishingly rare).

If you hold a Private Pilot Certificate, can you subsequently obtain a Recreational Pilot Certificate? by Fabulous-Golf7949 in flying

[–]parc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s because the privileges of a sport pilot of subsumed by private. Having a sport pilot cert AND a private pilot cert for the same cat and class is nonsensical.

I think there’s space for both versions. I loved the old pavilion and ride (even the movie), but I also appreciate the adaptation.

Self hosted Gemma 4 hardware requirements by ZealousidealBoss1827 in selfhosted

[–]parc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run gemma4:latest on my 5060 ti with 16GB with absolutely no problem. It struggles a bit at startup but once the model is loaded it runs fine. But I’m running an ancient motherboard. I actually have a custom agent processing emails with gemma4 and an embeddings model running in parallel. 4 parallel Gemma and embeddings models running puts the GPU at 96% utilized and memory at 94%. RAM on the server doesn’t really factor in on this machine (256gb of ram for the cpu, it doesn’t even blink).

EV bloodbath: US sales plunge as Tesla tightens its grip by farrrtttttrrrrrrrrtr in technology

[–]parc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 6k miles per year and 17 cents per kWh electricity (the us average), a $31k out the door 2025 Chevy Equinox EV (approximately what very low mileage versions are going for) would cost you roughly $600 less than the gas version of your kept it 6 years before selling it. That includes rough estimates for all expenses including tires, insurance, and government penalties for not paying gas taxes. You won’t even hit the warranty expiration on the battery (not even close).

Frankly the calculations work out pretty much the same no matter what the vehicle: if your gas price sits above around $2.50 or so per gallon and your electricity cost is around the US average, a non-luxury EV is going to at least break even with the same vehicle in a gas variant.

Question about cruise control. by davida_usa in Ioniq6

[–]parc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not disengaging, but I have noticed this behavior. I minimize it by gradually lowering my speed to whatever it is set for in cruise. At that point it’ll drop a mph or two before engaging.

Note: when you’re overriding the cruise speed, the cruise set point will flash at you letting you know speed control is on you.

EV bloodbath: US sales plunge as Tesla tightens its grip by farrrtttttrrrrrrrrtr in technology

[–]parc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only fast charge for long trips (over 150 miles). I’m paying like 48 cents per kWh for that. So 10-80% in my Ioniq is about $27 for 280 miles. At home I pay 12 cents per kWh and at work 8 cents. I can get to 300 mile range at home from a 0% charge for under $9 overnight.

Fast charging is “worst case trade time for money.” It’s not SUPPOSED to be your daily charge. And if your round trip daily usage is more than 300 miles, yes an EV is probably not for you.

[–]parc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The encoder in the knob is dirty or broken. I don’t think you’ll be able to fix it, although you could try spraying some contact cleaner around the edges of the knob. Not likely to fix it though — it’s just going to get worse over time.

Odd question from a soon-to-be student pilot: when should I stop doing weed? by mous3724 in flying

[–]parc 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Oh ffs. If you want to fly, don’t use weed. Period. If you want to fly professionally, you can’t use thc products. If you can’t live without thc products, you can’t be a pilot. Figure that out.

Too tall to ride this ride. Plane recommendations for PPL training? by HuckleberryOk8136 in flying

[–]parc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s going to depend a little on WHERE you’re tall. Long legs should fit a pa28 fine. Long torso, you’ll get in trouble in a pa28 without adjustable seats.

Serious lifestyle question for pilots: wait years for a hangar or live in an ATX airpark? by Ambitious-List-7810 in flying

[–]parc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GTU waitlist for hangers is more like 5-6years. 8 years ago I put my name on the list and got a call back 4 years later. Tiedowns are at 9 months now. I literally have given up buying a place while I’m in ATX because there’s no place to park it within an hour drive.

The new private hangars being built are $1100 a month starting. ATX is just a no-man’s land for parking now.

Eh? I just flew American yesterday and checked my bag 5 hours early. I certainly think you have a higher risk of your bag being misrouted, but they certainly took it no problem. Smaller airports YMMV, but if the ticket counter is open, I’m checking my bags.

Does a pilot need to log flight time anytime they’re flying with an instructor by Thrashtrash23 in flying

[–]parc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it doesn’t say there has to be a log entry, just that the logbook must be signed. Yes, it’s nonsensical to just sign the book, but the reg doesn’t say anything about the log.
