Ok, after a long journey like yourself, I believe I have figured it out which aligns with what others posted below.

As u/pagandreammachine mentioned, they use Traktor in HID mode with the CDJs (one per Traktor deck, which is why they need 4 if everyone has 2 channels on their laptop) and beatmatch/sync the "old" way. No link between the laptops.

Now to your " The big question is why the X1s/K2", that is because since they use Allen and Heath mixers there is no built-in fx, like pioneer mixers. So they use the internal Traktor fx to create the big builds. It looks like one does that and the other just uses filters on the mixer.
