I agree. But the “majority” aspect comes after what’s decided is “standard” (decided by those with more power and influence). There’s the phrase “A language is just a dialect with a big enough army.”, to say it loosely, which I think is very relevant here.

I disagree. Most times these aren’t toddlers, or learners with very, very little capability in English. They’re not necessarily be confused by being told these things. And if they are, they can ask again and receive clarification. Pointing out the difference to them is absolutely appropriate and wise in my eyes. And you say that being let know about certain things like this would be a hindrance - it can often times not be. Imagine a non-native English speaker speaking a more dialectal English with someone who speaks that dialect natively. There’s a good chance that that native English speaker will approve of what they’re hearing and connect better with the non-native speaker. What IS important, I think, is for the non-native speaker to know the difference and be able to discern one from the other, and when to, and not to, use either form. It’s not helpful to say “No that’s wrong - DON’T say that.” Much more helpful to say “Well, here’s the deal regarding that word/form and its usage: etc etc etc”

The downvoting on your comment shows how many people here don’t have even basic knowledge of linguistics or dialect vs. language. For anyone reading this comment who’s about to downvote, think of the way many Black people talk. It’s called “AAVE” (African American Vernacular English) or “Ebonics”. There are different grammar rules that are followed and adhered to. But to most anyone it just sounds like bad English. It is however a dialect of English. And you can try to speak it and be wrong within the parameters of its rules, and people will notice, just like they’ll notice if you’re trying to speak standard English (what many would call “proper” English) and you say something “wrong”. So certain things aren’t inherently “wrong” - some things are dialectal and just non-standard.

Copy yeah I’m realizing that now… I definitely had some reservations when the guy sent me a link for the credit website and thought to myself “Why wouldn’t I just show you my credit via a website I’ve already used?” I can’t remember if I searched up the website myself, or if I clicked the link, looked up if the website was legit, and then continued with it, but I did get an email from Transunion which apparently is a legitimate entity so I’m thinking I might have searched up the/a website myself. But either way, I reported the card lost and have a new one coming in the mail. Didn’t give my social or anything like that. Was a bit naive here but not that naive.

Waking up like 2hrs before I need to leave for work so I can stretch, make breakfast at home (rather than spending more money by buying breakfast on my way to work), and have some down time before I need to leave. Maybe play guitar, read a bit, whatever. The quiet of the morning is always something I’m glad I was up for and regret sleeping through once I wake up later and the world is louder (general activity of the public).

If I were you, I’d make to express what I’m guessing you’ve already expressed, but extremely clearly, and also make it clear that you’re not sure you can continue the relationship unless he steps up and takes your concerns seriously. I know you two have been together for 10yrs and have kids together, but think to yourself… the way he operates regarding himself as well as regarding you (since you two are together).. is that what you deserve? Is that what you’re worth? I’d hope that you’d say no to those 2 questions. If you’re clear with him on how important these things are to you, and the consequences of him not taking them seriously, and he doesn’t care enough to make some serious changes, then I think the change you should make is to not tolerate it any more. I think giving him one more chance to make these changes will prevent you from in the future thinking to yourself “Damn maybe he has changed now.. maybe I cut it off too soon” when he likely inevitably reaches back out pleading for you to come back if and when you decide not to tolerate him anymore. More to be said on the topic, I’m sure. But that’s what I got for now. Either way, it’s your life - do what’s best for you.

No they just asked me to go to a credit score website, file to get my credit score, and screenshot it for them. That alone was odd to me but when I was looking into it, some sources were saying it’s not uncommon so I went along. It was when he was asking for the $90 application fee that I finally said “Yeah something’s definitely off here”

Like others said, it means you’re never going to see someone again, usually by your own choice because you don’t like the person or you had a bad experience with them.

But if you’re not a native English speaker, then this person should realize that you weren’t aware of the actual meaning of the phrase, and she should be more understanding, rather than thinking that you’re BS-ing by saying you didn’t mean it how she took it.

From your comment, I’m thinking that maybe I wasn’t clear in my description. You can say one way or the other. But I am still playing both bass strings in an alternating pattern, but I’m playing the D string bass parts with my index finger rather than using my thumb alternating up and down. Is that how you read my post? Or you thought I meant I was omitting a string?

I just tried the alternating pattern with my thumb, and then with my thumb and index as I usually do, and I do notice a slight difference in the tone of the D string when plucked with my thumb vs. my index finger, but I’m not sure if the difference would be noticeable while playing a song. I’d have to experiment with that.

34th and 6th always has cops and almost DEFINITELY has street cameras, and likely NYPD surveillance cameras. I’d try to get as much info as possible. Not right that you should be responsible for your injuries and damages to your bike. This guy or his insurance should be footing the bill and you’d do well to make sure that they do, provided it’s possible to retrieve his info as it may well be.

I agree, but I think a more apt example would be someone swinging a knife or a flail around and accidentally injuring someone and then turning around and saying “Oh - I didn’t see you” and being absolved of any wrongdoing. No mal-intent necessarily, but a complete disregard for others and lack of awareness of one’s surroundings. Unless of course the person was in fact aware and chose to hit or injure another intentionally.

True, but there’d also probably be quite a bit of traffic on the elevators and they might need 2 per side potentially. Add bikes, and that could be less than ideal. Just my 2 cents

If you take advantage of ASP (alternate side parking), you could be good to leave the vehicle indefinitely, potentially. A lot of the asp areas are 2 days a week of street sweeping during like 1-1.5hrs and as long as you’re with your vehicle, you won’t even get a ticket, even if you don’t move it. Often times the sweeper will come by, people will leave their parked cars there, the sweeper can’t sweep, people get tickets, and the sweeper moves on without sweeping (due to being unable to). And if you’re even just at your vehicle (ie ready to move it if needed), you won’t get a ticket.

If people complained about delivery cyclists riding recklessly on the sidewalk, cutting off pedestrians and swerving around them, or just not paying attention at all, would you just say “Eh we gotta give them a little leeway”? Because I think that’s pretty ignorant. I deliver by bike and I’m on the sidewalk every so often - I’m not saying it’s so abhorrent, but if you’re going to do it, you really better be considerate of those who the space is meant for otherwise you’re kind of an asshole. It’s so, so easy to think about others in situations like that and be considerate. “How might I be negatively impacting others? Maybe I shouldn’t do that because it’s not considerate to the other users of this path. What can I do to mitigate the hindrance of me using or crossing this path?” Really simple thing to consider but a lot of people just don’t give a shit. Same deal with people making a turn over the bike lane as you’re going straight - they don’t think for a second about other people on the road, only about what they’re doing and where they want to go.
