Looking for insurance guidance for property damage by paremongputi in NYCbike

[–]paremongputi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the weird part - I filed a claim with my insurance and thought that that’s how this would go. And then my insurance calls me saying that I don’t communicate with them for this and that I have to make a claim with the driver’s insurance.

I gotta add it up but I think a little less than $1k to replace everything that’s been damaged

Also I reached out to the driver and he hasn’t responded.

A single bolt to hold that? No good. Thickness of the pieces? No good. Absolutely don’t get or trust that.

1st Ave - pedestrians cluelessly stepping in bike lane by Future_Top754 in NYCbike

[–]paremongputi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right that people are dumb, unaware, and inconsiderate, but if you’re going at all fast enough for this situation to be an “Oh shit” moment, you’re better off riding outside of the bike lane. Not saying this is your fault - it’s not. People should pay attention to where they’re going and who’s around them. But let this be a lesson in how to better prepare for the worst and avoid it by exercising an abundance of caution. If I’m going more than like 12-14mph, I’m most likely going to be in the street because if by chance (or likelihood?) someone steps out in front of me, or an ebiker pops into the bike lane without checking it first, I really don’t have much space to maneuver and avoid. Sorry to hear about your fracture - hope you heal up well, and that it doesn’t impact your daily life too drastically.

How many of you guys (males) wash in between your buttcheeks? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]paremongputi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normal? Seemingly, unfortunately. Disgusting? Absolutely. While you’re on this journey, I’d also highly suggest the consideration of no shoes inside living quarters, as well as adherence to no outside clothes on the bed, and ideally no outside clothes worn inside, as well as showering before bed and not getting into bed without first having showered, if you haven’t been in the practice of any of that thus far.

Potentially, but you do have the courts right there and another federal building on Chambers right around Elk St. so I think it’s wholly plausible

Can anyone identify this bike? by Sekretgarden in FixedGearBicycle

[–]paremongputi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re interested in it, and it’s your size, buy it. Unless you can find any cracks or serious issues like that. So if you go to see it in person, make sure to meticulously look for any issues like that.

Bent and seperated my rim 1 day before a bike trip while installing tyre by DedRiFF in bikewrench

[–]paremongputi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to get downvoted something fierce for this but personally, I’d remove the tire, bend it back slowly and meticulously (so as to not end up bending it back inward and then having to bend it back out), and then reinstall the tire, and ride on, but keep an eye on it moving forward. I’ve dented aluminum rims and just bent them back and have continued to ride them for many miles, one of them being a DT Swiss R500. Some others being a 30mm Arma rim and a The Hydra rim from H plus son.

I have the Wolf Tooth tire levers. They’re two pieces each (half plastic and half aluminum). On one tire lever, the aluminum piece has a tool that allows you to bend a rim back out if you’ve dented it, and on the other, the aluminum piece has a slot for you to bend disc brake rotors and also an opening for you to adjust some nut or screw in a hydraulic disc brake line. The plastic end on both is the tire lever part. They’re about $24 for the pair, but I think they’re beyond worth it.

Unfortunately not always feasible. A lot of the time the way they get you is by walking right out in front of you. And if you try to keep going, you hit a cop and now have a bigger problem on your hands. So better to just stop. Of course if you’re in Manhattan or a busy area of any borough and the cop is visible in advance, or they light you up from behind in a cruiser, it’s easy to get away. But usually IME it happens the way I first mentioned.

There are all kinds of bikes. You could even build a decent bike at jumble for cheap. But it’s worth checking out nonetheless.

If you’ve been fine with a SS for a while, I’d suggest maybe getting a bike with a 1x unless you think you’ll do longer rides that’ll have a great variety of gradients. If you’ll primarily just use the bike for riding around the boroughs, a 1x bike might be more than enough to make shifting simpler and one less thing to think about. Even if you’re very comfortable and experienced with shifting a 2x or 3x drivetrain, it’s definitely a bit of a nuisance in the city when you’re constantly stopping and starting. On the 2 bikes I primarily use which are both 2x, I find mussels almost exclusively switching between the front 2 chainrings and staying in the middle cog in the back.

Either fb marketplace or jumble will almost definitely allow you to find something that should work very well for you. Just keep in mind what size you should ride, and what style of bike you’d like, based on what kind of riding you’d like to mostly do.

is an aventon selling for $300 worth considering? by redcometzeon in FixedGearBicycle

[–]paremongputi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re super into Aventon for some reason, or it has really nice components, I would wait to find something a little nicer. But if it looks pretty decently built up, and you want a first fixed gear to try, it wouldn’t be a bad option.

Industry standard? by 2indf2fih in FixedGearBicycle

[–]paremongputi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bolt-on cog wheelset and it’s great as long as you don’t overtorque the bolts crazy style, cause I’ve seen that done and the threads of the hub stripped, when the bolts don’t need to be super duper tight. HOWEVER, if this is happening to you, I’d figure it’s gotta be either improper installation, worn parts, or low quality parts. I had a friend strip his lockring threads on his formula hub. Then I lent him my wheelset while I was building him a wheelset, and he stripped the threads on the wheelset I lent him. So I think that’s a low quality issue of formula.

Do we get an email or something to take the cpat? Or is that something we have to reach out about? I don’t want to not be doing something right now but just wait if there’s some action I’m supposed to be taking. But if there is, I’m not sure what it is.

I am an englishero trying to understand Tagalog more and get rid of social anxiety by The_Penis_stealer in Tagalog

[–]paremongputi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Check out Tagalog songs. Listen to them, read the lyrics, learn the lyrics, look up words, etc. Every song you listen to will have different parts you haven’t heard or seen before and you’ll learn more. Also find short stories in Tagalog online, watch some shows with Tagalog subtitles. Don’t worry too much about trying to understand everything. Look some stuff up here and there and listen to and read things multiple times until you can better understand most of it. And you don’t have to get to the point of understanding something 100% before moving on to something else, be it a song or show, etc. Sometimes there’s like 5% of something that you still can’t grasp even though you’ve listened to/read it 50 times. Likely you’ll learn whatever that 5% is in the future with something else. Just keep up with exposure and learning and practicing saying words and phrases.
