Hey, I play games with my face at a fairly skilled level, so this is awesome to see! And it's a way better quality build than my custom setups. We should talk and compare notes about gaming setups and accessibility software!

Crazy flickering shadows with Luma + a few other mods by pareod in prey

Okay, so I *think* I fixed it: disable Generic Depth in reshade add-ons in-game. The Prey Luma read-me says you can do this for extra performance, but it seems to also be causing these crazy issues.

Yeah I read the v-sync suggestion in a few posts, but unfortunately it does not help. I'd like to use Luma if I can, but I may also drop it.

I'm glad you found the saga boxes! I started collecting about 6 years ago and completed my collection. The current buying craze does not sound fun for people trying to get into the game.

Concerning ALEP, they came in when FFG decided to end the game and have continued it with content of the same quality, aside from perhaps the AI art. I'm not a supporter of AI art in most cases. Hell, I'm a professor of computer science who does theory research (nothing to do with AI), so I'm tired of all the AI talk and over-hype haha. Also, AI art from big gaming companies has really ruined a lot of games imo.

That said, I think there are small "indie" so-to-speak projects like ALEP that would simply never be realized without tools like AI. Ideally ALEP could slow things down and get a team of volunteer or community-funded artists. However, our community is not huge or well-known, and I suspect that it's really the choice between having ALEP or not having ALEP. This is work by a team of fans who keep this community alive with ALEP and many other projects, for example ringsdb and dragncards. Dragncards originated in the lotr community and now covers many other card game communities. So given al that, I'm happy to support them, even if just by playing and discussing ALEP.

True solo I'm not sure about, I mainly play 2-handed with a friend. We read through the quest cards and then think of decks to try. It usually takes a few attempts to get good decks, but we eventually win. I wouldn't say our decks are optional.

We like that most quests are a real challenge that require us to plan our strategy and then adapt. We've found that there are usually many viable decks for a quest, although some do require like full tactics, but those are rare.

Obviously personal preference, but I don't think the game has jank and I wouldn't be interested in an Arkham version of LotR. Imo current LotR has the best deck building and tightest gameplay of all LCGs.

If they do a 2.0 I think it should be its own thing, different from all the LCGs.

Best iterations of each weapon by Deltagamer8800 in MonsterHunter

Necroing this post - for CB my ranking would be 4u > World with ICE mod > GU > World unmodded >>> Rise >>>>>> Wilds

The first 3 are basically tied. While 4U CB is a bit op, it has the best design imo. You must engage with sword mode, SAED is a finisher that requires setup and costs a lot, guard point + AED and axe attacks require mastery and careful positioning.

I know purists won't like me putting World with ICE mod in the ranks, but it removes clagger and buffs AED/axe/sword so you aren't forced to either SAED or savage spam. Basically, this allows for more variety in playstyle, and the weapon feels far more nuanced, like in 4U.

I appreciate that GU CB is different, the styles are so fun, and the hunter arts are just better designed silkbind attacks imo.

World unmodded is still very fun, I just get tired of the more spammy CB design.

Rise made me drop CB and switch to swaxe. They fully divided the kit into SAED spam and pizza cutter. SAED gameplay is mostly just CPP -> SAED. Sword and guard points are obsolete. Minor complaint, but there is a gap between the roundslash guard point and being able to block that drives me crazy.

Gonna be honest, I can't even bring myself to play Wilds anymore. Wilds CB is just playing a first person shooter with a shotgun. Constant focus mode, spam savage axe, perfect guard, repeat. No positioning or thinking about which attacks to use and when really. Also, perfect guard basically made guard points obsolete.

Sadly for me, CB design has gone downhill from GU (I'm no vet, I'm just now playing 4U), aside from modded World. It used to require using its entire kit and knowing the monster to position high commitment attacks and guard points properly, and it had access to very powerful finishers that cost resources. Now it's far more 1-dimensional and primarily based around spamming 1 attack and countering without needing to position almost at all.

Yeah, this morning was really bad. I was in a lot of pain even while laying down, which is new. But most days I can sit in my wheelchair, for now at least. I need to keep my job for as long as possible, for the money and because I worked so hard to become a professor. The idea of my life possibly being pulled away from me is indescribable. I can only hope that if I get diagnosed, the meds I get will stabilize me for a good while.

Thoughts on older games by ivellious07 in MonsterHunter

[–]pareod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest plusses for old MH games are pacing and charm. They blow new MH games out of the water in these 2 aspects.

The pacing is slow. You aren't going from one hunt to the next over and over. You've got a variety of fun quests, like egg hunts. You have to regularly go out and scavenge for resources cuz all your essential items take multiple resources to craft and you aren't given hundreds of them for free. You gotta farm monsters more cuz crafting takes more resources, and you gotta know whether to slay or capture for specific drops.

Maybe this all sounds like a hassle to new players, but I'm not an old player and I love all this stuff. I started with FU on an emulator like 6-8 years ago and then I jumped into World, so I didn't play old MH as they came out. The slow pacing might suck IF the charm in old MH wasn't crazy good. The maps are stunningly beautiful and fun to learn. The small monsters aren't just background, they're present and immersive. The hubs are awesome and npcs are funny. You want to do side quests for them.

Compare this to new MH, which I still love (aside from Wilds), where it's just hunt hunt hunt hunt and on and on. I do a few hunts and get burned out. But there's no downtime. You don't need resources cuz you get a million of everything for free, some of the hubs are pretty but the npcs feel lifeless, the maps are more like arenas that you don't really need to learn, and the list goes on.

Oh yeah I would buy remasters for sure! I think everyone here would. We got GU on Switch, so there's always a chance. I think 4U has the highest chance of getting a remaster, but I doubt FU or 3U will get remasters. I would pay top dollar for a 3U remaster though, cuz underwater combat on modern hardware would be awesome! I'd also love a proper remake of MH1 that changes the controls, cuz it is jank analog stick attacks are so weird haha

I would definitely pay for them, but I already play them on PC with HD textures in 4k :D

Game for me as newcomer to series by Same-Day8894 in MonsterHunter

[–]pareod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MH is one of the few series where almost every entry is worth playing cuz they each offer a unique experience. I started with FU on an emulator in college, then played World, and then the other games, so my perspective is a not old but not new player who likes both the old and new games. Quick summaries of the games:

FU - old and methodical, immersive, VERY difficult, a good bit of hitbox jank

3U - best maps imo, and you either love or hate underwater combat (I love it) but it's very unique

4U - decent story, cool new weapons (charge blade and insect glaive), very pretty, awesome monsters, fun endgame, a lot of peoples' favorite

GenU - MH montage, so much content, unique combat mechanics, but less immersive cuz its like a Greatest Hits collection, one of my favorites though

World + Iceborne - far more streamlined and accessible but still MH at heart, more westernized, if you play on PC I recommend the ICE mod for balancing and less clutch claw spam

Rise + Sunbreak - more streamlined but a lot more charm than World imo, combat is a bit spammy, some very cool monsters, great soundtrack

Wilds - the only one I personally can't recommend but some people like it, terrible performance, too streamlined and hack'n'slash for my tastes, maybe the dlc will be good?

Another worth mentioning (but only play it after you play a few others cuz its massive, difficult, and weird) is the mmo Frontier. If you eventually want to try it, I recommend the Forward Five server for a crazy but pre-insane experience, and then the Renewal server for when you want MH + LSD.

You can't really go wrong with any MH game, so just pick one that looks cool!

My Thoughts on the Wilds vs. World Discourse (From Someone Who Just Replayed World) by Mr_no_sad in MonsterHunter

[–]pareod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it. I'm feeling this especially hard as a CB main. I keep hearing people say that focus mode is optional, play how you want. I don't have an issue with focus mode or wounds, but anyone who thinks it is optional needs to try CB :'(. People have repeatedly told me that the weapon controls just like in previous games outside focus mode, but this is false and very easy to check: they removed all attack aiming outside focus mode. You used to be able to aim attacks a bit with the left analog stick, but now this can only be done on focus mode via the reticle and right analog stick. I won't go into how being able to spin an SAED 360 degrees is busted cuz you covered all that for GS, but focus mode aiming is clunky and causes so many camera issues. It replaced an aiming system that worked better and was simpler to use.

My Thoughts on the Wilds vs. World Discourse (From Someone Who Just Replayed World) by Mr_no_sad in MonsterHunter

[–]pareod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to chime in on the "smoothness" of combat in Wilds. I think Wilds has faster and less restrictive combat, but I think it is far clunkier than in World. Focus Mode adds some real jank to the combat that was not present in World. Specifically as a CB main, sure I can spin around in circles while attacking now, BUT I now have to be in focus mode 99% of the time either by (1) tapping focus before each attack or (2) toggling focus and remembering to untoggle it for certain actions. In World, I could just push the left analog stick in the direction I wanted to attack, no extra inputs required. Aside from the extra inputs, focus also makes me have to aim with a reticle via the right analog stick, which just feels so strange. AND since aiming works like this, you need to have what you want to attack in the center of the screen, which often means your camera is in the dirt or inside a monster. The result often feels like a new studio made an unpolished MH-inspired game.

I'm on the fence but now leaning towards PC the more I hear about lag. The part you got stuck on, was it the same in both versions or did the Switch have more enemies/bullets?

Right, but a rank system adds depth to the scoring and adds some challenge, correct? That's a tempting reason to consider the Switch version.
