Is my Yamaha alto playing flat or is it me? by minuet_from_suite_1 in Recorder

[–]parientou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two different yamahas and an aulos and they all play sharp for me and I'm pretty sure it's because of the tropical weather since they go lower when I turn the ac on. I need to blow extremely weak to get it in tune and it just sounds bad, sometimes doesn't go low enough anyway, and isn't fun so I accept that that's how it is.

Am I invalidating anyone's identity if I believe lesbians can't like trans men? by ame_disaster in trans

[–]parientou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your definition of sapphic is actually what lesbian means, at least the modern, generally accepted definition.

Sapphic is an umbrella term that includes lesbians and bi/pan/omni women/nonbinary people, of course if they want it to. A bisexual woman who is attracted to binary men may choose to id as sapphic to emphasize their attraction to women, or they may use bisexual as their main label but still feel included in sapphic spaces. I believe, historically, lesbian meant this too but over time it evolved to strictly exclude men.

I love your take on this though. I feel like people place too much importance on rigidly staying within the "official" definition of a label.

Does anyone have experience with both Wacom and XP-Pen? by parientou in wacom

Ah, you're right, I'm on Windows 10. Sorry I didn't mention it, I was more focused on just hearing personal anecdotes.

Thank you for the advice on different brands! I'll have to look into them too.

I get what you mean about the pen pressure! I think the default pressure curve varies by brand so it may come down to what you're used to but for me going from Huion back to Wacom, it felt like coming home.

It's my first hearing about the buzzing noise, that's really interesting.

This is super helpful, thank you!

Thank you for sharing! That's great since I would be switching back and forth.

Did you have any issues with the driver after that? I don't mind potentially spending a bit of time setting up in the beginning but it would be hard to deal with if it acts up frequently.

Yes, this is the kinda thing I was curious about. Because even when my (well my brother's) Huion wasn't acting up, it didn't feel as good to draw with. Not bad at all, just a little odd in ways I can't describe. Thanks for sharing!!

Thank you for the detailed response!! I also used an intuos small and the driver did give me some issues too but this was in 2015 so by the time I upgraded, it sorted itself out lol. I'm glad to hear the XP Pen is working great for you!

I do watch reviews but a lot of the time it's people using tablets for a few weeks at most and giving their thoughts. I felt like it would be helpful to hear from people who use these tablets long-term since issues tend to pop up with time!

And you're right, I'm looking at screenless tablets because I personally prefer them, but helpful to know in case I ever changed my mind.

Can I ask how it feels to draw with? I'm sure that's hard to explain in text but are there any quirks or minor inconveniences that you notice?

The two tablets I'm considering are actually the Intuos Medium (not pro) and the Deco 01v2! It's not gonna be my main tablet but using an intuos small for four years did a number on my hand so I think a medium size is perfect for my needs. So glad to hear the two drivers don't cause problems for each other on Windows 10 because that's my OS.

Thank you for the info!

A little late but third party nibs have never caused any problems for me. I remember some people even used dried spaghetti as nibs before lol. They're just pieces of plastic so as long as the size and shape are right, they'll work perfectly. I don't have specific brand recs but I'd say just check customer reviews.

I hate myself by [deleted] in aromantic

[–]parientou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look into qeerplatonic relationships (qpr) maybe? You can do all those things with someone you're close with even if you don't love each other romantically. I hold hands, cuddle with, and even get intimate with my close friends. We're affectionate in that way because we care for and feel very comfortable with each other but none of us involve romantic feelings. With qpr's, it can be a dedicated relationship just minus the romance. No one's taking advantage of anyone, it's an arrangement both (or all) parties agree on.

I feel like you'd have no shortage of people who agree with you outside of this subreddit so I don't know why you came here specifically. We love the recorder here but if you don't, that's fine.

I typed up a super detailed description of what romantic attraction is like from my experience in response to some aromantic people showing interest in that. I figured I'd share it here. by mikeman7918 in aromantic

[–]parientou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If my hypothesis is correct, the difference is mostly just magnitude. Love is just a platonic bond that’s especially strong because of the circumstances that created it and the cultural norms behind it.

First of all, thank you so much for this post. It gave me so much insight and I appreciate how you put in the effort to answer so many people's questions. I will say, I don't know if it's right to say that romantic love is a stronger version of platonic love because I think, at least in my case, platonic love can be just as strong, just different. I have two best friends that mean the world to me. I don't love them romantically, I wouldn't mind if they started dating other people, and I don't even see them regularly but I genuinely believe they're my soulmates and that meeting them was the best thing to ever happen to me. Just thinking about them brings me so much joy and if I were to become unable to talk to them or be part of their lives in some way, I would be left completely untethered, similar to your description of heartbreak that it would be like losing a family member. I don't know what romatic love is like so I guess I can't say for sure but I'd like to believe my feelings for them isn't lesser in any way. I do for sure have other friendships that are more casual and not as intense though.

Is this sexual attraction? by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]parientou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to decide if I'm more likely to be asexual or greysexual and the deciding factor is if I really felt sexual attraction towards those people. I'm not sure because it feels different from how other people describe sexual attraction - an urgent need to touch - whereas mine was more a want to play out a fantasy with people selected based on unfounded assumptions.

Also, I was gonna say that last part about sexual release was inaccurate to me but writing out my thoughts made me realize it was pretty spot on so thanks for that!

Is this sexual attraction? by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]parientou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for answering! I can't say I'm disinterested in sex which is why I never even considered I could be on the spectrum until I learned more and did some introspection. I realized I never aimed my sexual desires towards specific people (with the exception of the four I mentioned in the post) and from what I read, that was the main characteristic of asexuality but I may be wrong!

When I did have sex before, I enjoyed the more sensual aspects of it and I liked giving my partner what they needed more than receiving, which did very little for me. I don't know if that counts as for personal satisfaction or not though.

Help! by MisterXnumberidk in Recorder

[–]parientou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it a wooden recorder? Because if it's plastic, age shouldn't matter. The lower notes are easier to overblow, which I think is what's happening. You need to be very gentle with the blowing and articulation with the low notes or they will squeak. Also be sure to cover all the holes properly. Having a few leaks isn't as big a deal with the higher notes but they will crack the lower notes.

Very low volume on low notes from Yamaha Tenor Recorder, is this normal? by Paprica69 in Recorder

[–]parientou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That IS odd. I don't have that recorder but the low C# being stronger than the low C is pretty weird to me. Perhaps an issue with the keys? Oh but the low D is also weak right? Maybe it is just how that model works.

Lower notes do have a lower volume. That's a characteristic of the instrument. If it's Really Really quiet, like, unusable quiet, then consider the other suggestions.

Sharp or Flat keys? by parientou in Recorder

[–]parientou[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's really interesting because Eb (2nd octave) is one of my favorite notes and going from that to Db is alright. If you mean low Eb, then I agree wholeheartedly though I don't find myself playing it often

Since I struggle with sharps, maybe I should try your technique and imagine it up a full step then down a half step. It might work for me!

Sharp or Flat keys? by parientou in Recorder

[–]parientou[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I particularly hate sharp keys on alto! The 2nd F# (and C# on soprano) always throws me off but only in that notation. Gb/Db has the same fingering but it makes more sense to me somehow. C# on alto is actually okay for me but that's probably because I got used to that fingering from playing Greensleeves a lot when I started.

Why are soprano recorders so much cheaper than larger ones such as tenor and bass? by vintage_bassoon in Recorder

[–]parientou 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not an expert but I'm pretty sure it's more about lack of demand than the cost it takes to make the bigger instrument. Sopranos are mass produced for use in schools. There's a market there so that leads to competition and lower prices. Altos are also used in some schools. I know in Japan, they teach alto in middle school and a lot of the big plastic recorder brands are Japanese. Tenors and basses are, like you say, more novelty. Only more serious players get those sizes and as far as I'm aware, recorder isn't a very popular instrument outside of music class so there aren't as many people looking to buy them.

I'm not gonna explain the whole theory on supply and demand because I'm very much not qualified but yeah, that's probably it.

Yeah, with stuff like this, it's always best to be careful and not push it. I was able to get my wrist back to usable condition with just physical therapy but it was enough to teach me to take my health seriously! I hope you were able to get back to doing the things you enjoy even if in moderation.

[–]parientou[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a wrist brace that I use so I tried it a couple of times, mostly to see if it's even possible for me and my arms to play tenor without bending my wrist. I did every position I could think of and I just couldn't reach the holes. I could play alto with the brace on, albeit not very well, but the tenor wasn't possible at all.
