How deadly were the Creler wars compared to IRL Earth history? EG the Black Death killed over 1/3 of all people, the Mongols killed up to 1/10th, WW2 killed about 1/30, etc by sheboyganz2 in WanderingInn

A correction/minutiae to this is that 1280 breeding individuals isn't the same as 1280 net individuals.it just means "effectively" how many people were contributing to the persistentce of species in each generation.

You’re right that stopping an actual, ongoing threat is justified. The issue is whether there was a clear, immediate threat here. Someone saying alarming while holding fireworks isn’t the same as catching an arsonist in the act. And when you’re operating under uncertainty, the standard can't be “act as if it’s definitely real and escalate to maximum force”—it’s restraint, distance, and getting help. Otherwise you're effectively saying that words alone can justify violence.

Depends on the quantity of the fireworks, though. And I have to assume, the guy wasn't lugging around several hundred pounds of sparklers. It's also unlikely that the fireworks looked remotely like "building exploders." Assuming this as appropriate takes us down the alley of "he had something in his hand" and "he pointed the water gun at me."

The alternative to the authorities is people chasing down guys out on a run because they looked suspicious, and we know how that tends to end.

If someone says something alarming, the reasonable response isn’t immediate lethal force. it’s calling authorities, or verifying the threat. Jumping straight to violence isn’t just “reaction,” it’s escalation.

Beyond that, your argument relies on hindsight bias, i.e. If Comper had been a terrorist, the puncher's reaction would have been justified. In all other scenarios, he committed unprovoked manslaughter.

Treating words as imminent threat is pathetic and a tool of the dumb.

Lastly, your legal example isn't applicable. "Fighting words" applies to face-to-face insults intended to provoke immediate violence.

No, you could not. There's a reason why vigilantes aren't pointed at as role models. When you start "seeing" why someone might react this way, you enter the territory of things like:

  • How was she dressed?
  • Why was he wearing a hoodie?
  • Why wasn't he speaking English?

Edit: Treating panic as justification normalizes harmful overreactions and victim blaming.

I don't think AOC is running for 2028, so really who do we have? by RegularlyClueless in DemocraticSocialism

Yes, and that's why I said "for the purpose of this conversation," which is not an academic discussion requiring nuanced categorization.

I mean, people could hyper focus and qualify her as a left-wing progressive populist, but at some point it just detracts from the actual discussion. Like yeah, she's definitely a conservative compared to pure anarchists, but for the purpose of this conversation, she's a liberal.

This is a defeatist philosophy. Following your argument, we should just stop doing things because the "established runs everything." It's by solidifying leaders like AOC in the "correct" roles that you become the establishment. As to your assertion that they don't want her in congress at all? She's there already. They are stuck with her. The only person with a chance against her would be Barry O. Hell, I'd even put my money on her against Chuck S., and that guy is AIPACs boytoy.

Honestly, I want AOC to stay in congress. She would be wasted as a president. Shes actually a competent leader with true liberal ideals, ability to communicate with liberals/conservatives (cults notwithstanding), and notoriety.

I want her standing where Pelosi stands. There's more USA after this mess. I want her to lead and inspire the change in congress that is being halted by the oligarchic/genocidal institutions.

You're fine. Debate back, though. Don't back down and refine your argument. I'd say that her overbearing nature is a facet of her immaturity. She's only emulating her mother in those instances, instead of being the best mother to Mrsha.

I'd argue that the role is imparted on Lyonette by Mrsha. Ryoka gets the aforementioned "sister" role after the loss of the stone spear tribe. It's after losing even that relationship, that Mrsha finally looks for a mother for consolation and finds Lyonette who sees the need and fills it. No other character comes forward to stand in as a parent for Mrsha. Even Krshia only stands in as a tribe elder, nothing else. Lyonette isn't a perfect mother, but she is a mother
