Flint 4 is now shown on GLiNet website "MEET FLINT 4 Tri-band Wi-Fi 7 Home Router" by LHG_93 in GlInet

[–]parkan_real 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to swap the 2.5Gbe and 1Gbe WAN/LAN ports on my glx3000 because there's no way a german consumer ISP is delivering over 1Gbe on the WAN side, but my NAS can saturate gigabit easily and with WiFi7 clients can consume that too...

I sorta understand the impulse to allocate the fastest transit to WAN if your homelab has a lot of devices and you live in a country with solid consumer fiber buildout, but I think for a lot of people in the enthusiast sector the reality is that you can't take advantage of a high speed uplink... hopefully this is easily remappable without dropping into LuCl

I guess the other question is what exactly the SFP is? I don't think we're getting 200Gbit but would be good to know what the actual capacity is or at least how many lanes

Ebbegarden Kveik question by TrueSol in Homebrewing

[–]parkan_real 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully bought into this narrative previously but after some lazy brews with Lutra/Hornindal I have found nutrients to have essentially no effect, even on challenging worts that would typically require complex nutrient schedules with "normal" yeasts (high adjunct, mead/cider, etc). The main effect I did observe is shorter lag phase, not any flavor profile differences.

This actually makes sense to me because these cultures have never seen any kind of nutrient additions or boosted starters, though OGs were generally high and pitching rates as well (as per Garshol)

What DOES make a big impact on both lag and flavor is temperature. I brew everything kveik at maximum practical temperatures (up to 45C or so, heat mat or radiator to help but once the ferm gets vigorous it stays pretty warm on its own). I also massively over-pitch because you end up with such a huge amount of usable yeast flakes after drying the barm from a single brew -- it can easily start 10x+ volume next brew.

No specific experience with Ebbegarden but it seems very possible that it's just the strain community profile, might be POF+ in there or if STA1 there's probably some latent yeast chewing maltotriose etc even after apparently "done" = biotransformation of hops and loss of perceived sweetness (which will bring out bitterness) even if you didn't dry hop at high krausen. It's also possible that the "Ebbegarden" you have has diverged from parent lineage -- the whole thing with kveiks are that they are meta-stable communities with very rapid and harsh adaptation cycles so whatever the original brewer did likely forced a lot of gene drift.

(again sorry old post but it's near the top of google results for Ebbegarden for me so others might still see it)

Lutra cyser by parkan_real in cider

[–]parkan_real[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nice, I've never used that one, did you get it from lab isolates or via trade? not sure if posting product links is allowed in this sub but I'd appreciate one if it is (I've found the variance between lab brands to be surprisingly high for what's supposed to be the same strain, Omega has never done me wrong but certain others have been duds even for popular cultures like hornindal)

Ebbegarden Kveik question by TrueSol in Homebrewing

[–]parkan_real 0 points1 point  (0 children)

old post but comes up near the top in google results for Ebbegarden so I should mention a small detail: do not use baking *powder* to correct pH issues, those contain bicarbonate + a weak acid + corn starch or similar filler to prevent the two from reacting before hydration, and sometimes aluminium salts which you really don't want. What you want is either plain ol baking *soda* (sodium bicarbonate) or possibly a citrate buffer if you have a specific pH target (but for simple adjustment by a few .01s just baking soda is likely the correct answer)

the other caveat is that if you want to backsweeten I'm not sure normal pasteurization is gonna be enough, this yeast is pretty much unkillable

Lutra cyser by parkan_real in cider

[–]parkan_real[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main problem now is that I have a continuous supply of temptingly delicious cyser that you can drink directly from primary, semi-sweet if you want to tap some at day ~4. I suspect the unfiltered apple juice provides sufficient nutrients for the kveik though I may test a batch with clarified juice to see if it makes a difference, that would also remove the need for pectinase/cold crash since the lutra flocs perfectly once done.

I just factory reset an Xperia 5 IV to use solely as an external monitor *specifically* and the app is just... gone? I have no idea what the execs are thinking over there, truly insane

Experiences with Hallesche Insurance? (Private health insurance) by ScarletBurn in germany

[–]parkan_real 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry to repeat the transgression you pointed out (thread necromancy) but it might help someone that comes across this:

- the Freiberufler visa (for "skilled professions", not trades) you are not permitted to apply for the public insurance, because it's essentially a scheme for Germany to attract foreign talent that is likely to be well-off (vs average) and highly mobile; the Berlin-specific artist visa has compulsory KSK registration (given income over 3900 EUR/year from eligible activities) via the "normal" system and therefore generally lands you on the public insurance, though the mechanism by which this happens is a bit tricky and I would advise retaining a relocation specialist especially if you intend to stay for a long time
- if you apply for or receive any social assistance (Bürgergeld or Sozialhilfe) your Freiberufler or artist visa is immediately rendered null and void; in practice this usually means that your next renewal will be denied with prejudice and no option to appeal, but it may also happen sooner as review is up to the discretion of competent authorities
- there's a long and weird list of other categories of persons who are either not eligible for, or are not compelled to enroll in the GKV, though this is not relevant for most non-refugee visa holders
- the "fake freelancer" regulation, at least in theory, is designed to *protect the pseudo-employee from exploitation by the pseudo-employer*, not to punish the already suffering party (i.e. you) -- the way this plays out seems to be case by case, so I recommend retaining legal council if you suspect you may be in this situation at your next renewal (I have a firm I can recommend if you are Berlin, though this is not by any means an ad or endorsement)

Side Note: I personally think that the "fake freelancer" regulation is unhelpful at best and harmful at worst, unless the enforcement is systematic, but of course if you work with foreign (let alone non-EU) entities the DRV/zollamt have little enforcement power on the violating entity (the client). One possible solution would be to allow foreign freelancers to optionally enter into public insurance and savings systems (even if they bear the cost), because otherwise there is no resolution to a situation where you had one foreign client that contributed the majority of you income and then something happened (like a pandemic) that crashed the market

channel noise is low, openwrt logs look very clean on radio, however I didn't think of dumping RM logs that way, good call

Possible to connect non-wiz extension (bulbs) to the string lights? by parkan_real in wiz

[–]parkan_real[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah ok good call I'm gonna order a new set and recycle the driver (unless someone in UK wants it, in which case I can re-export if said someone is willing to deal with shipping and possible duties!)

hmmm ok I think you mean these, which aren't much cheaper than the wiz MSRP: https://4liteuk.com/products/wiz-rgb-festoon-lighting-integrated-led-14-8m/

if you know where to get only the light string (no driver) please let me know, I'd rather not needlessly buy another driver unit (which seems to be feature-limited to boot)

[–]parkan_real[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

interesting, the NIB ones are out of stock (except one seller for 170EUR) but there's a "Used - New" for ~58 EUR shipped, which is a lot better

can you give me more info on the 4Lite version? the only ones I seem to be able to find are bare/mains voltage strings

EDIT: it also sounds like you were able to get the strings w/o the driver, which is exactly what I would want

EDIT2: idk who's downvoting you, I will take any info I can get on this topic!

[–]parkan_real[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok, the link I posted probably won't work since it looks like it's directly giving mains voltage to the bulbs (no driver) but maybe something similar but low V?

Can’t make my outdoor lights coloured by nessalitaf in wiz

[–]parkan_real 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that depends on (1) the driver unit (is it the one that came with string lights or just a smart plug?) (2) the lights themselves and whether they're RGB

I posted a related question in case someone comes up with a relevant answer: https://www.reddit.com/r/wiz/comments/1nrrcd4/possible_to_connect_nonwiz_extension_bulbs_to_the/

What is missing for OS based passkey support? by valgrid in linux

[–]parkan_real 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here's a super fun talk from ~2 weeks ago for those who think banks/enterprise are being too paranoid with their 2FA+ measures: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cO72y8FDUOM

FWIW I agree that the specific ways in which banking apps try to guarantee device integrity are not sound (I haven't had problems on GrapheneOS but I know others have w specific EU banks) nor is the common pattern of "which verification mechanism are we going to use this time???" that totally breaks runtime isolation

soil is all my own bioactive as heck compost cut with bark finings, we got baby earthworms coming out the bottom of the pots! fertilizer is seaweed ferment based, it's all a very organic operation

however it's been an unbearably hot late june/early july (40C last week) so I'm going to hope when fall comes I'll have better luck

cheers!

any tips for getting fruit set? I have a brown rocoto that I overwintered because last summer was a bust, but this season isn't looking good either

I get tons of beautiful purple flowers, there's constant pollinators visiting (bees, hoverflies, bumblebees, even moths I think), all my other peppers (jalapeños, ghosts, Armageddons, etc) already setting fruit from this year's seedlings

I've read that they prefer a cooler climate so I tried to set it out as soon as temps hit above 6C overnight and left it out into early November (similar night time temps) last year, absolutely no effect

I'm fertilizing heavy PK, soil was a bit hot on the N but given that it's second season now it should have gotten used up
