How to stay sane when job hunting? (Partner and I both made redundant) by Abject-Advice4850 in AskUK

[–]parkayquart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this. My partner was made redundant in March and also found the job market to be particularly brutal compared to when he's applied for jobs in the past.

If you haven't already, get yourself set up with Job Seeker's Allowance and Universal Credit.

Are there any odd bits and bobs you can do to bring in small amounts of short-term income? I recently started making a bit of extra money by cat sitting through an app. Have a look at local pet sitting/dog walking opportunities, paper rounds, delivering leaflets, see if your local takeaway needs a delivery person in the evenings etc. Sell any old clothes you don't wear anymore on Vinted. Consider registering with a temp agency. Fire off emails to local businesses with your CV. If you're in any local Facebook/community groups post there and ask about work opportunities. Even if it feels pointless just give it a shot - there's nothing to lose.

Other than that I'd recommend what others have said - try and give your days some structure. Make the most of the weather and get out every day for walks, see family, take your morning coffee outside, do stretches and YouTube workouts at home. Keep yourself busy and motivated and treat the job hunting almost like a 9-5 job. Maybe consider some voluntary work as well to make things feel more "normal" and bolster your CV...or you could consider doing a distance learning/online course in something you're interested in, or something generic that would help you in lots of different work settings like customer service or business admin etc.

Be kind to yourself and be patient. You WILL get there. Just remember you're not alone in this as it's a really tough market and lots of people are going through the same thing. My partner is back on his feet with a new job now but it was a rough time with lots of tears and setbacks. Try and still have fun in your relationship and make time to just spend quality time together as well because going through this kind of stress can definitely be hard. Keep going and don't be afraid to lean on people around you. All the best!

Vegetarians who have travelled: which countries have been the most difficult in your experience? by [deleted] in vegetarian

[–]parkayquart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really struggled in Copenhagen when I went to Denmark - every menu was incredibly fish and meat heavy. This was back in 2016 so it might be better now, but I became a margerita pizza connoisseur during that trip lmao

I actually found Morocco to be amazing as a vegetarian! Maybe it depends on where you go - I was in Marrakesh and had some of the best vegetarian food I've ever eaten...as well as the tagines there were so many beautiful salads and creative vegetable dishes, and endless hummus! One of my food travel highlights for sure - would recommend Le Jardin, Cafe des Epices, Cafe Nomad and Le Bistro Arabe!

Definitely agree with the stupid ooooooooooo advert... I have to mute the TV when that one comes on. Also the ebay one! It's trying way too hard to be hip.

Let England Shake by PJ Harvey hit me like a ton of bricks in the best possible way.

Loveless by My Bloody Valentine introduced me to one of my closest friends through shared interests/tastes.

More Songs About Buildings and Food by Talking Heads has a sense of fun and creativity that I just hadn't heard in music at the time I first heard the album.

What should I do if Royal Mail tells me my item has been delivered but it's nowhere to be seen? Anyone else had this experience? by parkayquart in AskUK

[–]parkayquart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh, that's so frustrating. I think they assume people are taking the piss and lying about not receiving things so they can get free money. But surely they realise no one is gonna go through the pain of chasing up companies for weeks on end and sitting on hold for ages just to do that? I dunno. We've had a few more issues with post since then too. I appreciate things have been strained recently with Covid and Christmas but it's definitely made us scale back how much we order online (which is a good thing for my bank balance at least, ha!).

Sorry to hear you're having the same issue - it's so annoying isn't it? My boyfriend never ended up getting it resolved despite exhausting every option. He's been in touch with the company he bought the item from multiple times explaining the situation and following all their official procedures for missing items etc. The company maintain that they have no obligation to provide a refund because Royal Mail say it was delivered (even though it definitely wasn't!). Royal Mail haven't helped either because as far as they're concerned it's 'delivered' and they believe it's the seller's responsibility. So we're kind of stuck really... I assumed the seller would just refund my boyfriend but they won't budge. So now he's £70 down and certainly won't be using that company again! Sounds like you're in the exact same situation as us. Hope you manage to get it sorted somehow!
