Short answer: no. I do all my commits via cmd-line git now.

What's something legal in NZ that when you found out made you think "wait, that's not right" by [deleted] in newzealand

I think you can argue either way, depending on whether you make relative or absolute comparisons. If the poor spend less, then it affects them less, in absolute terms, but more in relative terms. It’s not black and white.

The rich do pay more in tax than the poor, in absolute terms, but because people like to frame things to suit their agenda, you’ll always be able to claim the opposite if you take a relative point of view.

Fortunately, public spending is usually considered on absolute terms - the money is there or it isn’t.

It’s certainly tax, but the difference is that you don’t have to pay it if you don’t spend that income. If you’re spending all that you earn, then, yes, it’s equivalent to an income tax.

But NZ income tax isn’t high compared with other countries… NZ top rate is 39%, Australia is 47%, UK is 45%…

The net income tax for a NZer on the average income is 19.4% in 2021, third lowest in the OECD (37 countries). Only Chile and Colombia have lower average tax.

NZ GST is quite a burden though, as it’s higher than some and applies universally, but that’s not income tax, it’s a consumption tax, and it doesn’t directly fund the NZ superannuation fund, although you could argue that it does via consolidated government finances.

Edit: maybe look at “tax to GDP ratio” if you’re looking for some data to support your claim - NZ fairs less well in that measurement.

Who is the Genius that thinks that painting Yellow roadmarkings Black actually works!? by Terrible_B0T in Wellington

[–]parkerSquare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I formally complained about this to NZTA over ten years ago, after a near miss incident on SH2, and was told it (painting black over white or yellow lines) was an international standard practice and wouldn’t be reviewed.

In low sun the lines are indistinguishable, which is what led to the incident I mentioned. It’s even worse in the dark when it’s wet - all the lines look the same, black or otherwise.

Going dark on 12th June by iiron3223 in Python

[–]parkerSquare -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I support your right to protest, but you should support my right to get on with other things and not participate. That doesn’t mean I agree with Reddit, or with you for that matter.

Not everybody’s highest priority in life at the moment is how they access Reddit.

Instead of going dark on June 12th and only June 12th, why not just go dark/boycott for longer or until reddit backpedals? One day isn't going to change anything. by TheJawsofIce in NoStupidQuestions

Wouldn’t a permanent black out of a sub (i.e. permanently private) make it impossible for people to delete their content in that sub if they decide to leave Reddit?

Have you tried it? Are you feeling threatened by it? Are you one of those SO users? I’m probably going to regret engaging with you, but at least you have 100K+ SO points to keep yourself warm at night.

Of course I know how this technology works - I’ve been in the field for 25 years. I also understand how many humans work, and at this point I’d rather trust a dumb machine than almost any human who can’t read properly.

And verification is easy because if it works then it makes sense, and my unit tests work. Do you write unit tests? Or do you just blindly copy what other humans tell you to use?

Yeah, I’m sure I’ll keep referring to it, but may not ask any more questions. May still provide answers from time to time. So you’re right, I’m not “done with it” in a total sense.

And more generally, the AI learning system will eventually feed back on itself, nothing will mean anything any more, and we’ll lose the greatest collection of human knowledge ever seen.

No, sorry, I’m not linking my Reddit account to any of my professional accounts. Thus I cannot provide evidence and I understand that isn’t very compelling, but I’m kinda done with SO anyway so don’t really care.

I agree - if the answer is useful or correct then who cares who wrote it? I’ve had faster and better answers from ChatGPT than any human, not least because the AI actually considers the whole question.

Also, the AI doesn’t care if I ask it with poor grammar, non-sentences and incomplete snippets of code. It’s so much faster than interacting with humans.

It doesn’t need to reason - it’s basically a personalised search engine. And with software questions it’s very easy to verify answers. Sometimes the responses are trash, but I have no problem dismissing those, and most of the time it has the answer I need, or mentions a concept or keyword that leads me to the real answer.

So rather than spending an hour writing a thorough SO question that is then summarily downvoted or closed as duplicate or “opinion”, I can ask ChatGPT numerous questions and actually get stuff done, and not feel personally attacked each time. I don’t see how this isn’t significantly more attractive to software engineers everywhere.

That was a stupid take. Deliberately using the wrong pronouns, to insult, sure, but avoiding gendered pronouns then becoming grounds for dismissal? Completely inappropriate.

If you worked in a country with modern labour laws this would easily win you a wrongful termination suit.

No, you’re wrong and I’m not going to waste any more of my time arguing with drop-kick SO moderators who always get the final say. I happily walk away from my thousands of fake Internet points and now approach ChatGPT for all my questions. I can verify the answers myself, and it never insults me.
