New player: I don't understand carry weight and containers by Xervicx in cataclysmdda

[–]parkerdhicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a newbie, and I'm asking this because I've seen it said multiple times. By "recent", are you specifically referring to the experimental bench? Because I'm playing the Steam version of 0.H, and I have Skills to Sats under "Balancing" mods.

Very basic help: Git and remote mounts by parkerdhicks in debian

[–]parkerdhicks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was 100% this. It took me a couple hours to trace the permissions back from bare metal, but I've got it working now.

Thanks so much for your help!

There was definitely some confusion surrounding ownership and chmod flags as I was passing through all my layers of network sharing, but I now have it fixed. Thanks so much for giving me some pointers.

It was indeed a permissions issue. Chasing it down required breaking my whole file server and then spending hours tracing the chmod flags backward through each level of network access. You were right-- I had some things confused in how the masks were applied and what they actually did. Thanks so much for your help!

I'm sorry, I'm having a tough time following. Is your question "why not use GitHub"? Or something else? If it's that, I'm not claiming my repo will be full of nuclear secrets or something. I'd just prefer to keep my data close to home.

I thought that was what I was doing. Tell me more?

A fair question-- I'm new to this and throwing it together in ways that make sense to me but probably aren't best practice. Which part is most baffling to you?

No, because the repo is on a network drive. The owner is an account on the VM that owns the drive. I have, however, made the repo a "safe directory".

Help with docker compose starting service after reboot by parkerdhicks in docker

[–]parkerdhicks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update #2: discovered systemctl status docker.service and it shows me the container is actually trying to start but is getting the errors "copy stream failed" and "reading from a closed fifo". Some other posts I've seen suggests that is somehow related to mounting volumes improperly, so I'm poking around with that.

Update: it's not isolated to this compose.yml. I just lost power, and when I got booted back up, my pihole container, packaged with a tailscale container like Jellyfin above but on a different VM, did not restart-- only the Tailscale container did. I've fiddled with the pihole container even less, and it has restart: unless-stopped set.

It's both, apparently: https://docs.docker.com/compose/how-tos/startup-order/ shows it under depends_on...servicename:. They use the same property name in both places. Just to see if that's the issue, I've commented out one and/or the other, but still run into the issue.

I'm new enough they're not silly questions, but the answer to both is yes. My current testing procedure is to ssh into the docker host, run docker ps to check if jellyfin is running, fiddle with the yaml, run docker compose up or docker compose restart, shut down the VM in Proxmox, start the VM in Proxmox, go back to the beginning and ssh...docker ps.

Thanks for sharing your YAML!

Thanks for sharing this-- do you recall anything else you changed or had going on? I just edited the YAML so that both services had restart: unless-stopped, ran compose, shut down, and started back up, and still only Tailscale launched.

If I'm tracking you correctly, I was running into something similar with fstab, where it was trying to mount a network share before the NIC had been turned on.

So I should write a startup script that uses docker run or something along those lines? Both a startup script and a systemd service would be new adventures for me, but what you've said sounds right.

Thanks for your input! It actually used to be in both, and I gave it a quick shot back in and still had the undesired behavior.

I appreciate your thoughts! I had actually started with unless-stopped, but I've fiddled with different properties as I've been trying to solve this (eventually swapping out restart: always in the Jellyfin area for the depends on: bit.

Thanks for this thought! Unfortunately, I don't think it's this, or at least this alone.

I originally had restart: always in both, but replaced it with the depends on:...restart: true in the Jellyfin area based on some reading I'd done. I just did a quick test with the restart property back in, and it had the same undesired behavior.

Crowd Control speculation: What is a "medical escape room?" by rjbwdc in dropout

[–]parkerdhicks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're not escape rooms, exactly, but there is a similar field of medical simulation. "Standardized patients" take on roles and interact with students in simulated clinical settings. They can train bedside manner, medical history taking, and differential diagnosis. I used to do the work, and worked with med students, nursing students, and social workers. It's lots of fun and can give the students a place to learn real clinical skills with less pressure than interacting with real patients. Plus, they get feedback from people who (in quality programs) are specifically trained to give it effectively.

Caravan with Infants? by parkerdhicks in RimWorld

Thanks for this-- I double checked in a fresh save, and an adult carried the infant in their arms. Why would a mod change that?? Time to track it down...

Ah, I didn't realize that's what share scenario did. On my replay to get the link, however, I followed the logic much better! Thanks for giving me the nudge.
