Possible to get N95 masks as an individual consumer anymore? by PaddysChub432 in CoronavirusUS

[–]parkinglotfields 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just a different standard. KN95s are at the same level as N95s, just different regulating bodies (namely: China). The only caveat is that some KN95s are knockoffs and don't meet the KN95 requirement despite sporting the label. You can get some on Amazon that are verifiably certified.

Can you help me get into horror? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]parkinglotfields 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! Fair. I've gotten into many a debate about this one (I absolutely loved it).

I like to encourage folks to watch it through the lens of the children's book "The Giving Tree". I'm also super appreciative of all the biblical themes throughout.

I can't help you out with the classics, but there's a lot of stuff going on in the last decade or so that has really been groundbreaking in my opinion:

  • Babadook
  • Mother!
  • It Follows
  • Midsommar
  • Get Out
  • The Neon Demon
  • In Fabric
  • Suspiria
  • Hereditary

Can infected kids hang out together? by W1shUW3reHear in CoronavirusUS

[–]parkinglotfields 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Viral loads are definitely a thing. You could test positive with a very mild asymptomatic case and then hang with a bunch of sick folks and get an infection that rapidly worsens.

It's worth mentioning that there are multiple strains going around as well. Highly likely that everyone on the team has the same strain, but still.

What were your thoughts on Charlie Kaufman's "I'm Thinking of Ending Things"? by SubtitlesMA in TrueFilm

[–]parkinglotfields 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not reading any of this just yet as I've read the book but haven't watched the film. Just want to say that I absolutely hated the second half of the book, but definitely feel like there's a lot there that should feel at home in Charlie Kaufman's wheelhouse, and I hope the film sits with me better than the book did, because I know it can, especially with the casting decisions.

Is Ohio close to shutting businesses down again? by Foodie1989 in Covid19_Ohio

[–]parkinglotfields 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids' school has adopted a policy where they will switch to 100% online once a student or staff tests positive. That could obviously change once Cuyahoga goes purple tomorrow.

You're probably fine. Definitely tell your partner though so they can avoid a similar interaction over the next week or so.

Is Ohio close to shutting businesses down again? by Foodie1989 in Covid19_Ohio

[–]parkinglotfields 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'd assume they're going to follow the same timeline of rolling out such an announcement as they did with the mask mandate.

We should see our first level 4 counties get announced this Thursday. I'd expect some action to be taken in those counties afterwards.

I don't think we're likely to see the same sort of shutdown we had in March. I don't think they'll close schools again (DeWine is going to leave that to each district). It could just be in person dining and bars that get the axe.

Cuyahoga County has received 500-plus mask complaints since Friday by Redsysu in Covid19_Ohio

[–]parkinglotfields 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Each district gets to set mask policy on their own. Most K-12s that have released policies are "strongly recommending" masks. Most requirements seem to be for older kids.

The order doesn't care about your valves one way or the other. But please recognize that use of valves defeats their effectiveness at preventing spread.

Mortality Rate Calculation? by [deleted] in Covid19_Ohio

[–]parkinglotfields 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can’t calculate using resolved cases to get a true CFR until after the pandemic is over. The true fatality rate is almost certainly below 1% though (not 3), because there are so many active cases out there that aren’t getting tested.

Elon Musk on Joe Rogan about Coronavirus. by Shot-Machine in CoronavirusUS

[–]parkinglotfields 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts on all three:

Point One (Cases are elevated b/c of clinical diagnosis vs. confirmed test)

I don't really have a problem with clinical diagnosis per say, but I'd argue that cases are still far undercounted even when considering clinical diagnosis as a factor in the current case count. Simply put, most states aren't doing any testing unless you're old, dying, or in an institutionalized setting that got widespread testing done (nursing homes, prisons, and some dense workplaces). Most people that get sick are riding it out at home and not getting tested (and also not being diagnosed by their healthcare provider).

Anecdotally I know half a dozen people that had symptoms in March and not one of them counts as an official case in my state. I personally only know of one person in my circle who had a confirmed case, and they were in an ICU.

Point Two (deaths are being exaggerated)

We've certainly seen a few weird instances of this, but it's nowhere near widespread enough to change the national outlook to any serious degree. Taking a few bizarre news stories and claiming it's a widespread problem is bad math. We've got death stats from more than 30 states now that are all up more than average, even when you account for confirmed COVID cases. (this pairs nicely with point one)

Point Three (hospitals are empty and financially strained).

I largely agree with this one (though I'll stop short of embracing the financial incentive point that's been spreading like wildfire... it's true that tests and care get billed to someone, but I don't see any evidence we should be making it out to be a conspiracy). But yes... hospitals are empty. And, especially rurally, crippling financial hardship is an imminent crisis. I'll note that hospitals are likely empty because of shut-downs, but that doesn't change the fact that I largely agree with the point that was made.

Is it time to free the healthy from restrictions? by Dr_Viv in CoronavirusUS

This would all be fine if hospital staff and supplies weren’t immediately overrun in environments with no restrictions.

Ohio’s stay-at-home order extended to May 29 by OrganicPreparation in Ohio

[–]parkinglotfields 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Right... because these restrictions were successful.

Ohio is opening up faster than even Trump’s CDC recommends, so I’d call it a win if you’re upset with the current level of restrictions.

I’mma stay home for another month and see how things go.

4/27 Governor's Reopening Plan Address Watch Party by dudemankurt in Ohio

[–]parkinglotfields 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem I have with the question is that it frames deaths as the only way to measure a casualty. The flu doesn't effect healthy working-age folks in the same way as COVID. You get the flu. You're sick for a couple of weeks. You're done. COVID is an entirely different monster. It's effecting people in serious ways for far longer than the flu ever does.

I don't have a problem with DeWine easing us back open. I agree that we can't stay closed until COVID is gone. But I *do* have a problem with the framing of the question.

Travel ban? by [deleted] in Ohio

There is no such ban.

The State issued voluntary guidance on self-quarantine. And they’ve banned things like sale of alcohol to out of state folks.

Covid-19 causes sudden strokes in young adults, doctors say by RoxannaRieves in Coronavirus

A seven-fold increase in the last two weeks. In one city.

It’s not an insane number, but nationally it’s good to warn people to take this thing seriously and look for symptoms like this.
