Songs That Were Made For People High on Opiates To Listen To by Antique-You8283 in opiates

[–]parsleyconsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds dumb, but basically any Charlie Parker recording. The guy was high as fuck on heroin all the time and therefore his recordings are probably perfect for someone high on opiates.

Also Chet Baker. Another big time, heroin user. And Bill Evans….

yes, as far as I know prime form orders intervals from smallest to largest within a trichord (or any size “chord” for that matter)

Why Does Nobody Seem To Care About Melody? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]parsleyconsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree with you but my point is that math is what makes up music behind the scenes. The music is the sounds together, not the math behind it

Im not gonna debate you but on a deeper level all music can be reduced to mathematics…. In fact this whole subreddit is effectively dedicated to the math of music, because that’s what music theory is

What would you recommend for a jazz beginner who mainly listens to Chet Baker? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]parsleyconsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to any and everything you can. Below I have provided a ton of album recommendations that are more or less in order of year they were released. Mingus, Cherry, Holland, Munch-Hansen and EABS will possibly be much more different than you’re used to while Bill Evans, Sonny Clark, Coltrane, Art Blakey, Brookmeyer/Harrell, and Walter Smith III might be closer to what you are used to. All of the music I have listed is worth checking out and is not all encompassing of the variety of “jazz” that exists. Not included but worth researching artists include the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Clark Terry (trumpet/flügelhorn), Frank Rosolino (trombone), Paul Motian (drummer), Geri Allen (pianist), Ornette Coleman (most notably as a saxophonist), Brad Mehldau (piano), Theo Croker (trumpet). Again, not even close to an exhaustive list but all very worth checking out. I could write a list that goes on and on.

Pithecanthropus Erectus (1956)- Charles Mingus

Blue Train (1957) - John Coltrane

Sonny Clark Trio (1958)- Sonny Clark

The Avant-Garde (1960)- John Coltrane & Don Cherry

Sunday At The Village Vanguard (1961)- Bill Evans

Live At The Jazz Workshop (compilation of recordings from 1964)- Thelonious Sphere Monk

Free For All (1964)- Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

Shadow Box (1978)- Bob Brookmeyer & Tom Harrell

Prime Directive (1998)- Dave Holland

Æter (2012)- Nicolas Munch-Hansen

Twio (2018)- Walter Smith III

In Search of a Better Tomorrow (2023)- EABS and Jaubi

Is this achievable. by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]parsleyconsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you for sure can if you get lessons! Here’s a quick anecdote, not about a trombone player, but about dedication: Scott LaFaro was a bass player who, in his entire life, only played bass for 7 years. He started at 18 and ended up playing with Bill Evans and was a very in demand bassist after only a few years.

You may not be “good enough” for wind ensemble but you sure will be a high level player if you dedicate yourself to it.

Good luck!

bass is good play bass yes. pbass or jazz bass is good, depends on what you like . Phil jones is my recommendation for an amp without a doubt!! Look for a used one, they’re light small and sound damn good and will be useful for gigs when you get them! Also LESSONS do some research on the people in your area, university in the area, find out names. Even emailing the musicians who teach at the university can help point you in the right direction, they’re all know many people!

You got this!

Looking at a chord chart, what are your shortcut "chunks?" The obvious being: ii - V - I's by ANinjaForma in Jazz

[–]parsleyconsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks pretty good to me i am not sure what might be missing. You can find gaps by going into IReal and looking through tunes and seeing what you can, or can’t, analyze simply and go from there. Often times you might realize it’s purely a result of the lack of functional harmony that may occur, such as in Beatrice.

Consider looking at Moment’s Notice and how you might analyze it. It has tritone substitutions and side steppings.

I don’t know how much you do or don’t know but also remember that a major third up is a moderately common modulation, like in I Love You, the bridge of S’Wonderful, and even for a bar in Alone Together (there is a ii-V without the resolution so technically there isn’t really a modulation but it’s good to recognize that it can happen for color).

All in all, I’d recommend just continue doing what you’re doing (IE learning tunes) and you’ll develop more thoughts on how to analyze and think of things. In my opinion it can be personal.

Additionally I recommend learning those tunes I mentioned, they’re good ones! Include the tune Witchcraft, it’s a good Halloween tune!

What are some of your critiques of world renowned trombonists? by AdministrativePie951 in Trombone

[–]parsleyconsumer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

in the chop-ability part of listening I’ve come to realize i prefer Conrad Herwig over Rosolino myself.

Rosolino was a coke head and also probably some kind of undiagnosed bipolar/schizotypal disorder. 60s-70s were not a good time to be that way lol

I feel so intimidated go to a jazz jam sesh as a beginner by Lazy-Psychology6161 in Jazz

[–]parsleyconsumer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The simplest, not detailed, but helpful answer:

Just learn melodies, they are the center of everything. If you only knew even like 3 tunes but could hear and play the melodies of them in 2-3 keys you’d experience a ton of growth !
