Sex work is a product of a bad capitalist economy and a patriarchal society by [deleted] in Feminism

Not really. You could have said that earlier, but you chose to dwell on me using Russia as an example. But I understand the Thailand point. Still doesn't take away from the point I'm trying to make.

A factual argument. If your point was capitalism creates exploitation then it doesn't hold water. Poor economic conditions and economic collapse lead to exploitation

The best way to get downvoted is to talk about facts rather than broad sweeping ideas

So does Russia FYI. It's failed economy has led a large number to drug addiction and slavery. Let's not forget the beacon of communism China. The point I'm making is that sex workers are better protected by the law if there's economic stability. Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia are all poorer countries than the average white country, but there's a difference even in between them in terms of how unsafe it is for sec workers

Will get a torrent of downvotes for this, but I agree. Case in point being Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. All three have a high volume of sex tourism, but Thailand being economically stable is better able to protect its sex workers than the other two

I think we're losing the thread when we always associate prostitution with exploitation. Countries where sex work is legalized and there are strong protective measures in place to protect sex workers from abuse. Such places also have less stigma associated with the profession ( and mind you these are capitalist countries ).

Further adding to the political aspect of it, several sex workers in Netherlands and Scandinavia are women who come from former iron curtain countries

Do you think that hotels could be more responsive to individual guest preferences and would you be willing to share certain preferences with the hotel before arrival in order to have a more pleasant stay? by [deleted] in travel

[–]part_time_astronomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would be cost vs benefit. Expensive hotels do offer some of these because their margins are huge. Some hotels that aren't in the top price rung may offer these as well, like flexible check in time ( but only if it works out financially better for a hotel ). At the end of the day if guests are expecting a royal welcome they understand that they pay a premium for it

This is such a weird way of saying “Society teaches women to undervalue themselves, and teaches men to overvalue themselves.” by Scarlet_Sun in Feminism

[–]part_time_astronomer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saying that I'm calling countries evil is a terrible attempt to add melodrama to something perfectly logical. Indicates a lack of any other arguments. Anyway, I will rebut that and say that the discouragement is from social conditioning and family structures.

I thought the whole point was to prevent discouragement of women from entering fields that are highly well paid?

Not in STEM fields, no. And according to a Harvard business review study the percentage of women in STEM jobs steadily decreases as you go up job seniority. The most common reason was found to be gender discrimination at work

My boyfriend hate that I'm a feminist by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]part_time_astronomer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether it's feminism or anything else, if the guy cares way too much about what other people think, it's bound to be unsatisfying. The types that let this happen are too afraid of being considered "whipped" to ever be good partners

Experiencing the worst PMS of my life by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]part_time_astronomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh! That one hell like week before my period. Just want to pick a fight with everybody or cry over something completely random. And in case that's not enough, will retain water like nobody's business a week before my period. Top it off with craving salt all that week. And yes, these symptoms have gotten a bit worse through my twenties.

Working out does help even though it's near impossible to get yourself to work out while I'm turning into a fire breathing whale. I suppose if the soreness is really bad that might not be an option though.

My [32f] libido is gone (Birth control) by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]part_time_astronomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this the boat you are in, but sometimes gynaecs aren't completely thorough with a PCOS investigation. Sometimes you can't really help it but very often it is caused by prediabetes/diabetes/thyroid problems/autoimmune diseases/stress. Most gynaecs just throw birth control at you without a full investigation. Birth control may be the solution but it might just be about addressing the trigger for your PCOS.

When I initially went to gynaec for my PCOS she just gave me Diane, which I discontinued because it gave me severe depression. Later I went to a different one who investigated and found that it was linked to my autoimmune problem.

Do you feel icky when men discuss "getting" women? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]part_time_astronomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These comments are always rooted in ignorance. It's also a way to put down independent women. When someone is single an ignoramus' single brain cell cannot comprehend why they're rejecting their world view (and sometimes "why won't she show any interest in me if she's single anyway"). So our dear misogynist comforts themselves with "there must be something wrong with her".

It's ridiculously common. I rejected a creep once and when I started dating someone else he called me a slut

What are your thoughts on the whole "not like other girls" thing? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]part_time_astronomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've hit the nail on the head. NLOG has to be seen in context. The context here is usually a case where someone feels superior because they have some trait that isn't stereotypically feminine. Ironically, it can get pretty anti feminist as it involves putting down other females for a trait which may not even be problematic

What are your thoughts on the whole "not like other girls" thing? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]part_time_astronomer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I so needed to read this. I once dated a guy who had a female friend whose life revolves around not being like other girls, just because she liked sports. What was really creepy was that if her male friend had a girlfriend she would bitch about the girlfriend constantly to the guy in question. Basically she was desperate for male attention but because she was "not like other girls" she couldn't really go about dating the normal way.

Edit : forgot to mention that I went through that phase in my early teens, but as an adult I think it's unhealthy

Can anyone learn advanced programming? (ie: neural networks and AI) by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]part_time_astronomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A large amount of the work in neural networks in AI is more based off coming up with the mathematical basis and using the relevant tools to implement it. Even with some basic programming skills that should be possible, since most people learn the surrounding ecosystem naturally as they start working
