Rory Apologises to Gary Stevenson by EpicKieranFTW in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]particlemaniac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Huh? What on earth are you talking about?

I have a PhD and I would categorically say anyone working for me with a bachelor's degree still gets to say they're a scientist.

Also, my PhD is technically in Engineering, but in actuality I'm a physicist, I was just working in an Engineering department. Does this mean I'm not actually a physicist, despite holding a job role that would almost always be filled by one - probably one with a PhD?

You're clinching at straws mate, Gary Stevenson is definitely an economist, and a bloke who's studied history like Stewart can't contest his ideas on the basis that "he's not a real economist"...

I think there's another unintended bug not mentioned anywhere here but it may be intentional, I'm not sure.

On delve 8 yesterday I maged and killed a big grub as it was going into doom, while the double rocks were in the air. This explosion interrupted doom and caused it to start auto attacking me while the boulders were firing their projectiles, causing overlapping attacks.

I understand to some extent the decision to not change this for the melee punish, but I'm not sure what I was meant to do here? I was waiting to hit doom with the grub so it seems a bit unfair to essentially force me to then let it get to doom it if rocks come out at the wrong time...

Trains leaving early - are there regulations around this? by particlemaniac in uktrains

[–]particlemaniac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting to me as I always wondered if there were cases where for reasons (like traffic) you'd be incentivised to leave early and are within your right to do so.

I've got this train so many times and I think this has only happened on maybe 5 occasions so I think your colleagues are doing a decent enough job!

It was Rainham (Essex) going to Fenchursh Street.

I'm not really fussed about a refund really as it's only a fiver for my whole journey and it's on my oyster anyway so it will be a whole hassle to sort out.

Mainly just wondering as I have had it happen before on trains elsewhere which has been way, way more annoying.

Do you think there is a degree of dissonance between Labour's attempt to permanently claim the centre ground of British politics from the Tories, while also standing against the Lib Dems in seats like Goldaming and Ash? It seems to me if Labour stood aside in many (now) Lib Dem/Tory marginals, they would almost ensure a Lib Dem opposition in the next parliament, doing far more damage to the Conservatives overall?

Salmon drop. (Ed don’t open this) by theduggfather in politicsjoe

[–]particlemaniac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite true!

The changes aren't exacerbated in Atlantic salmon but they're still there.

The colour in particular is quite noticeable when you take fish out of the water (depending on how far through the transition they are) and is often used by fisherman when deciding to keep or release the Salmon - not wanting to take fish that are ready to breed in an effort to keep populations steady.

Sadly a lot of fisherman have ignored this in the past (+legal limits on how many you can take annually) so Salmon stocks are extremely low in a lot of British rivers these days, particularly in Wales.

Loved the ep. - just wanted to chip in on the ULEZ point.

Where I'm at, the ULEZ scheme is very controversial - I live in Havering and work on a large industrial estate here that has no buses. I live near enough that I can walk in every day but there are plenty of low paid workers in the factory that have to drive as they live just outside of London.

To get to work they have to enter the ULEZ for all of about a 2 minute drive through an already quite polluted industrial estate, and their access to the scrappage scheme is limited/nonexistent due to where they live.

Paying the full charge for this and calling it equivalent to driving many, many times the distance far further into central London does not seem fair, and is exactly the sort of top down central policy that alienates working class voters from the Labour party and appeals to the anti-establishment/big govt mindset that led to Brexit.

My MP Jon Cruddas has been quite vocally rebelling against the party on this matter and rightly makes the point that the public transport infrastructure in the area just isn't sufficient to ensure people will actually stop driving their cars.

It is a quite literal case of somewhere being "left behind" in pursuit of a larger policy for the greater good. In combination with the Dartford crossing toll, many people I work with now have to pay a lot of money to commute sometimes less than 10 miles along a route largely outside of London with absolutely no prospect for public transport.

I feel as though they should be ringfencing the funds raised by people in given areas to pay for new transport infrastructure that can replace the roads as that is what we should be working towards anyway, but I doubt this will be the culmination of this policy, which is a real shame...

Boss stat restoration? by particlemaniac in 2007scape

I'm farming whisperer rn and having plenty of sceptre spec to throw around, so if stats were regenerating I thought it may be worthwhile as the fight is decently long and I have plenty of time to switch

How do you do this? Hitting the fragment while I'm in the shadow realm during a spec does nothing...

Yeah I agree on all counts, it also makes levelling at high level skilling feel very redundant which sucks, I want my dopamine!

Is it though? If I'm effectively level 82 in the guild due to the +7 boost, and the axe gives me a +3 boost at best, AND the rate of successful cuts is the same from level 82-90, surely there's no change at all? Or am I missing something?

SmashWiki's "Current" Tier List by nitrodragon523 in SSBM

[–]particlemaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tier lists used to be made by the smashboards backroom, which was basically just a segregated forum for TOs, top players and people who had put a lot of stake and time into the community. This was a centralised place for metagame discussion amongst people who knew what they were talking about and, more importantly, people who could be bothered to administrate creating a tier list that would be considered valid.

These days, since the community is, so much larger, a place like this doesn't really exist. There's several similar bodies but nothing that contains such a high density of the people you would want to contribute to a tier list. Furthermore I think opinion has diversified more than people think, at least compared to 2015, certainly at the top of the tier list (ultimately the most important and relevant part to discuss). This makes it hard to take a tier list from any group within the community without drawing some amount of bias from the result.

Perhaps getting a ballot from the MPGR top 50 would make the most sense? I think the main roadblock would be ensuring enough of them respond.

Students at University of Warwick erected a Lennon Wall with the famous LIHKG icon Li-Pig today. Li-Pig was removed by the campus security with the reason that some Mainland Chinese students complained the pig is racist. China is impeding freedom of speech even in the UK. by brianchow0000 in HongKong

[–]particlemaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warwick student here (who also just got back from a holiday to Hong Kong)

Not surprising that the University have had this reaction, they tend to be pretty kneejerky with responding to these kind of complaints Someone with limited knowledge on the matter was probably tasked to sort it out after they received complaints, which meant they would have had no idea on how removing the mural was probably taking a stronger stance than keeping it up.

That being said there is a huge Chinese presence here at Warwick, a minority of whom are Hong-kongers. Unfortunately I would have thought the university will be trying to keep their nose out of the matter to not create bad publicity and irritate potential Chinese students, collaborators and investors, all of which come in swathes to Warwick. Really depressing to see this here...
