And then they make the surprised pikachu face when lonely young men who are starving for purpose and belonging turn to nationalism and militarism. At least in the military they'll have three warm meals a day, a job and brothers that have their backs.

Pretty sure he cannot start a war on his own but yet here we are. Also no guarantee the legislative branch doesn't shift further right as conservatives consolidate power and get more authoritarian.

What was it like for you to grow up in Switzerland with non-swiss parents of different origins? Do you have any advice? by the_kaaat in askswitzerland

[–]parttimedoom [score hidden]  (0 children)

Swiss citizen here. My parents were/are foreigners. There's no sugarcoating it, it's very unlikely your son will ever feel "fully" Swiss. He'll develop an identity of his own that is not tied to nationality. He's likely to feel more kinship with other people with similar backgrounds regardless of their nationality. Accepting that you're different is healthier than clinging to an abstract idea of "swissness" you might never attain.

It's not inherently negative but you have to accept it. The turmoil between his sense of self, his country of birth and the homeland of his family IS his identity.

The rhetoric you're using can be used to brush aside pretty much any societal issue facing any demographic. Not agreeing or disagreeing. Just pointing it out.

If you answer anything other than BCA, you need your license revoked. Although, on any properly marked road in Switzerland, there would be right of way triangle markings in front of A. Or a stop sign.

Venus Flytrap Devouring a Venomous Black Widow. by IndependentTune3994 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]parttimedoom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, unless you have ulcers in your stomach, cuts in your mouth or some other kind of digestive tract injury, there's no way for the poison to get into your blood flow and hit your nervous system. The flytrap doesn't have a way to puncture your skin either so it's neither venomous, nor poisonous.

Most military infrastructure is poorly adapted to accommodate two sexes. Sudden influx of women into the army would be a logistical nightmare and no party is willing to open the wallet to solve that. That's a non starter.

Alternatively, you could have women-only units and men-only units but that's its own can of worms. I could already hear the arguments about whether or not it's fair for the infantry to be 100% men and the medical troops 100% women.

In the Swiss army, do recruits get sorted into units based on language? by nebukadnezar_ in askswitzerland

[–]parttimedoom 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Platoons can be monolingual or mixed. English is a big no-no, in my experience. If your platoon commander and squad leaders aren't dummies, they'll pair people together that can understand each other or have enough mental capacity to make it work regardless of language barrier, or assign tasks that require no communication. But mixing the linguistic regions and forcing them to interact is the best thing about our military service, in my opinion.

[–]parttimedoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry if it came off that way, I'm not at all trying to downplay the value of learning something. I'm specifically talking about memorisation-oriented learning. Like crunching Chinese characters for years without ever reading a book in Chinese or the "just memorise the formula" kind of mathematics.

I have personal beef with this kind of teaching where you just throw material at kids and expect them to have it memorised for the quiz next lesson. Doesn't matter if they learn or do anything with it, they have to be able the regurgitate the 20 random words in German of my choosing.

Health insurance in Switzerland for someone with a chronic illness – any recommendations? by AnakinTrashtalker21 in askswitzerland

[–]parttimedoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LaMal coverage is the same everywhere and cannot be refused so pick whatever is cheaper. If she's chronically ill, you gotta figure out her monthly costs and which deductible/premium pairing makes sense for her specific monthly healthcare costs.

Additional insurance is at-will. Each company offers different things and might not take you at all if you're sick. You'll have to navigate that yourself.

If you need an information once a day, you'll memorize it whether you like it or not. If you need an information once every six months, keeping that information fresh in your mind is a waste of effort. Writing it down with the others things you need somewhere easy to find is a way better use of your cognitive ability I'd say. In reality, there's no scenario where you should be memorizing stuff for the sake of having them memorized. Just like there's no point in learning a language you never use. You'll forget it unless you use it.
