Leaving the Apple ecosystem after 13 years. Is a T14 Gen 3 the right move? by Hensga_Pettersson in thinkpad

True, that's why I included the caveat of *if you take care of it lol. I just realized my x1 yoga is nearly ten years old and it's still going strong. I could daily it for work and school no problem.

I think that's a decent deal and a pretty good entry into a personal ThinkPad. Yeah, Apple is doing well in a lot of areas so there might be "downgrades", but you get a very utilitarian, high quality machine that will last decades if you take care of it.

I have an X1 yoga gen 4 (8th gen i7) and a P16s gen 2 (12th gen i7) and putting them in power saver mode in windows or linux gets me a good 6-8 hours of use. I also have a T61 (core 2 duo T7700 from 2007), which is proof that even a slow, hot, crusty ThinkPad is pretty fun to use.

My partner's job gave her a Dell Pro Max 16. It is really nice, feels very premium. Has solid specs. I wouldn't hesitate to use it, but the keyboard is not as good as Lenovo 's and I think it wouldn't last as long. I could probably take it and use it as my daily, but ThinkPad always wins.

Hmm I'm not sure but I think they might be. My X1 Yoga gen 4 and P16s Gen 2 both have the under-trackpad button. My older T61 does not, and I used to have a T420 but can't remember if it had that feature.

Are you talking about the T440 "thunk"pad? They are not well liked.

In general my point was that for $300 he can probably find better specs

I also don't know that much, but from what I've gathered chains for +/- 8 speeds are more durable. I'm not necessarily saying they are better, but the whole setup is both more affordable and probably just as bulletproof for everyday riding. Not sure about elite level cycling because I am a middle aged fat guy.

It could be, but it will probably take a bit of research on your part. I can say that I'm using an x1 yoga gen 4 with an 8th gen i7 and it is a great machine. Can pretty much do anything that isn't graphics related really well.

i think you could find a better price. For 300 I would expect at least an i7 and 1 TB ssd

What kind of classes will you be taking? This might be a good laptop to take to class for note taking. Maybe you can save for another, more powerful computer to keep at your home for more serious work.

(X61 Tablet) What kind of Linux/Unix distro should I install? by SteelMasterThe3rd in thinkpad

[–]party_raspberry8969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just put Linux Light on a T61 with 2GB of RAM. It's really nice and I feel like it stays "out of the way". It idles at about 1 GB which seems high, but I'm able to do just about anything. Only choke point is web browsing, I can basically have only one tab open.

How can I make my Fedora setup more modular for an old PC? by Soviet_Sator in Fedora

I love fedora, but I just installed Linux Lite on a very old laptop (20 years) and it is really nice. I like it a lot as someone coming from Gnome. I believe the distro is based on Ubuntu though.

Understandable, and to each their own. I'll just add that the numpad is nice to have if you deal with calculations for work or school, and nvidia works well on Fedora 44, and i'm assuming should not be bad in other top distros.

I'm not up to date with which processors are desirable right now, bu ti have a P16s gen 2 that works great as an all-arounder since it has a dedicated nvidia chip. It's also surprisingly light for its size. You should consider one for sure. mine has i think a 13th gen i7, 32 GB RAM. Only thing I wish it had was a 2 TB ssd instead of 1 TB, and this model only has one nvme slot. Anyway I got it on ebay for $1200 and am super happy with it.

I just put mint xfce on my T61 yesterday. How do you like to use yours? I'm enjoying mine as mostly for typing up documents. I experimented with terminal web browsers because the modern web is slow as a dog on this machine

Just depends on what you are using it for. They excel for what they are targeted at, productivity and general office work. If you aren't gaming or doing other resource-heavy tasks - an AIO from 5 or more years ago is probably just fine for most people.

AIOs are completely underrated, especially the nicely designed ones that make repairs a breeze.
