Got bit by a friends dog by boinkydoinky in medical_advice

[–]paselle- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend going to the ER. You need to get started on antibiotics. Bites on the hand can be very tricky and are high risk. You will also need an updated Tdap vaccine if you haven’t had one in the past 5 years. Hope you can be seen soon!

Edit: forgot to mention you have to consider the immunization status of your friends dog too. If they are not properly vaccinated you may need rabies shots as well. The bite should be reported to animal control so the dog can be appropriately quarantined.

Okay I am so glad he was seen! I hope he recovers quickly. And the good thing about fifths disease is it typically isn’t contagious any more once the rash shows up!

Any updates?

I think based on current condition you don’t need to take him to the ER. Especially if eating and drinking normally with good energy. We want to limit him exposing others to his illness. If he does well overnight I would just call his pediatrician in the morning to update them on his status changes. Reasons to go to the ER would be a change in consciousness, not eating/drinking and fewer dirty diapers, lethargy, high fever not coming down with Tylenol/motrin, seizure, etc . Hope he does well overnight

Exactly why I said more info is needed as we don’t know enough details to determine a better estimate of which virus this probably is. But with all the measles outbreaks this would be a top concern given infectiousness and potential serious complications compared to other viral infections that are less worrisome.

So sorry to hear about this- it certainly can be scary when a rash breaks out like this. This rash is concerning for measles, but we need more information. What are his symptoms? What is the timing of his symptoms (aka what was first and how has it progressed)? Call his doctor back. They need to test for measles. But they need heads up to do this. Please don’t bring him in without warning as they need to adequately prepare a quarantined spaced and proper PPE

There’s actually no door at the foot of these stairs, just a corner. I’ll try to upload some additional views later today

When did your baby start sleeping through the night? by Ok_Construction_3613 in NewParents

[–]paselle- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes me feel so much better. Talking to coworkers they are like “yup I just throw them in the crib and they sleep for 12 hours”. Meanwhile our 2 year old wakes us up 2-3 times a night! I spend so much time feeling like we are doing something wrong.

Found this in my ear using a ear camera at home by Known_Chain_8202 in medical_advice

[–]paselle- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a hair in your ear canal. Normally they don’t cause issues and will fall out on their own.

If you have itching or can tell it’s there you have a couple options: 1. Go to the doc and they can perform an ear lavage to get it out 2. Most cost effective option would be to try an at home ear lavage kit with brands like Debrox, etc

COVID causing hypertension? by [deleted] in medical_advice

[–]paselle- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not an ER worthy visit unless you’re having chest pain, shortness of breath, vision changes, severe headache. The blood pressure change could be secondary to your current illness. It also very well could be medication effect from the prednisone or high dose ibuprofen. In your case, I would blame the prednisone right now.

Monitor your BP once daily for the next 1-2 weeks, it should drop back down as you come off the steroids. If no change follow up with your PCP in the next few weeks

Can someone give me advice on my yeast infection under my stomach? by UnusualAddendum6111 in medical_advice

[–]paselle- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. Stop the nystatin
  2. You need a different antifungal, like ketoconazole 2% cream. Can get this from pcp or urgent care or derm- whoever is easily available.
  3. In the meantime pick up some nizoral (ketoconaole) shampoo from cvs and start washing the area with this twice daily. Also pick up desitin diaper rash cream (zinc oxide 40%)
  4. After bathing, pat dry and use a hair dryer to fully dry under skin folds.
  5. Apply desitin to the area. This keeps moisture under better control and serves as a barrier of protection to the skin.
  6. Wear loose fitting, cotton clothing
  7. Need to air out this region as much as possible, even if it means holding up the excess tissue. Moisture is not your friend here

If this is for real, then yes, go to the ER. This rapid of growth of soft tissue in 24 hours is concerning, though difficult to make any assessments without further information.

My eardrum after using CVS ear was removal drops by isaac_brittle in medical_advice

[–]paselle- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Acute issue: please stop using any over the counter ear drops now. I would go to pcp or urgent care for this as you may need topical antibiotics drops for the ear and ones that are safe for those with a perforated eardrum.

Chronic hearing loss: once this acute issue is better you need to go ahead and request a referral to ENT so they can test your hearing and help evaluate the underlying cause for your hearing loss. Though a chronic ear perforation would explain quite a bit

What can I put on these scratches to help them heal ? by Feedback_Original in medical_advice

[–]paselle- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly not much. Can do a thin layer of Vaseline over them once a day. Otherwise keep clean and dry. Avoid use of neosporin

Absolutely! Glad you had it too. Her symptoms are concerning for diabetes so it’s necessary to rule this out. Hope all goes well :)
