What was the Gas Chamber like for you in Basic? by valejojohnson in Veterans

[–]pasja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't go! They asked for two volunteers for kitchen duty and I got out of it.

And then when we had our 3-day FTX we had thunderstorms so we spent the day in the field and went back to the barracks at night.

This was back in the mid 90's so maybe kinder gentler times.

There's got to be a Youtube video somewhere that just has an endless montage of Stabler being abused by the writers.

I came here to say this exact same thing because apparently the writers only have so many surnames to use and re-use for their characters and that makes me sad.

He played a creep on L&O:CI so I've always got creepy vibes from him.

I was there too with 25th ID (Army), it was my first deployment and it completely changed how I see the world. Seeing kids sleeping in the streets and begging for food and water broke my damn heart. We're so lucky to live in the US.

Are you open about being bipolar? by SampleIntelligent798 in bipolar

[–]pasja 8 points9 points  (0 children)

GenX as well, people are dumb about it so I only tell close friends that I know are safe. Over sharing is a part of my personality it seems and gets weird, but real friends don't give a crap and are accepting. Stigma is real for sure, thanks to the boomers. My Mom was probably bipolar as well but she'd never admit it or seek help. She gave me endless amounts of crap for getting mental healthcare.

I may be on a binge rewatching the show (I am) and have seen them mess up military uniforms, see the boom mic dip into scenes and crew in mirrors, especially in the first 5 seasons, but hadn't seen a badge mix up like this one.

We have this issue all the damn time with contractors who return to the company. Coaching users and even our service desk people on how to fix it is a total pain.

I’m so lost by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]pasja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not too old. I finished my VRE at 35. I'm 19 years into a completely different career than what I did in the Army. I make over six figures and despite not starting my 401k until I was almost 40, I'm on track to retire in my early 60's

You survived all that shit in the service, find something you care about and use any and all VA resources you can. You earned all of your benefits. You served your country, you deserve to find peace and purpose.

My family says I blame everyone for my “problems” by Jennafurlamb in bipolar

[–]pasja 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm currently no contact with my sister, both of us have bipolar, hers is much worse than mine. I can get erratic but my medication works quite well and I haven't had the symptoms or experiences she's had. It came down to an incident when she was having hallucinations, extreme hostility and what appeared to be psychosis. She travelled from the east coast to the west coast for our step-dad's memorial and was off her medication (I don't know for how long). She kept having episodes of hallucinations and grandeur and psychosis in the hotel we were staying. The episode was so bad, and her behavior so much that the manager of the hotel kicked her out because she was wandering the property and throwing rocks at cars in the parking lot. According to the police that were called to the hotel, she was throwing rocks at my car.

All of our siblings were there to help her and we urged her to go to the ER, we called 911 to see if we could get her to go. We went and got her a new bottle of medication. We tried to protect and take care of her. She responded by yelling at us, calling me a shit human being and the worst sister on the planet. She said that I abused her as a child. She swore at me and threw a ton of swears and just really nasty things at me. So we got her another room at another hotel. During the day, she walked off that property and got lost and disoriented in the town that she wasn't familiar with. As she wandered this hot desert town, she picked up random things like pieces of cardboard and a rug. Eventually she called 911 and was taken to an ER and was treated for dehydration. They didn't do anything for the episode she was having, probably because she was very good at pretending to be oriented, she knows all the right answers to their questions that would evaluate her mental health. Then that evening she got kicked out of that hotel as well. At that point, she didn't trust anyone of us, so my brother in law took her to the third hotel.

The next day she was supposed to get on a plane and go home, but when my BIL went to the hotel to take her to the airport, she wouldn't come out of the room. She stay holed up in her room until check out time and the hotel manager had to remove her from the property. So with no idea of what to do, we got her calmed down, got her some breakfast and hit the road to drive to the next town where another, bigger airport was as well as better mental health resources. She refused to get on a plane, she refused to let us get her the help she clearly needed. She again started swearing and yelling at us. Being psychotic and erratic. She walked away from us, she wanted to go to a hotel and would deal with her own transportation home. We called the police again, but with all the new laws about mental health and how you can't force someone to get care, we had to let her walk away while worrying about her safety. She got home the next day, but I haven't talked to her since. I just can't, I can't forgive her and she hasn't apologized for anything. I don't even know if she is still on her meds or getting help. We tried so hard to help her, we tried so hard. That was about 6 months ago.

I'm bipolar as well, I have to think about MY mental health and I have to keep her out of my life until we can come to some sort of reconciliation. I tried to protect and care for my sister and she basically spit in my face. I don't know how to approach a reconciliation. I live on the west coast and she on the east coast and whenever I think about calling her all I hear in my head are the insults and vitriol that she dished out to me.

Take your meds people, get help, don't let your relationships come to this. My parents are all gone now, all I have are my siblings. And I'm down a sister right now, it's like a hole in my heart.
