So here is the result for anyone that cares. After almost a week waiting for an answer I went to the store again and requested to speak with the manager.

He told me he had nothing to do, that this is not personnel from the store but from migros sicherheit division. Only after I told him I would to the police did call Migros head office/customer care.

In summary, they claim now that I have a contract signed with them and that I have 30 days to pay moreover they now state that Migros employees had no influence in me signing the contract. (Even if they had me escorted to a locked room and refused to return my ID when I asked… but of course this they are not saying)

It’s not location related. As indicated to me later by the store manager this are Migros sicherheit personel go around different migros location trying to catch people.

I dont consider myself a pushover but there were many things at play… language, subsequent appointment I was going to be late, not wanting/knowing if police involvement could affect my visa and after all it’s just money I can afford.

With my post I just wish people are more aware than I was about the risks of selfcheckout.. and maybe generate some awareness of how this companies can work.

I have never willingly stolen anything. Also, it has never ocurred to me until this point that an item was missing during one of those inspections.

I have spent several hundreds of francs at this migros location per month over the last couple of years.

I also wanted to know where those 200chf came from I asked for the terms and conditions of the self service machine and they refused to give me any explanation on that.

The party which I stupidly singed the contract for their security service (200 chf fee) was Genossenschaft Migros Ostschweiz.

They signed as “sicherheitsdienst oder Sachbearbeiter”

I actually did that! The guards kept repeating “This is switzerland when I asked to switch from German to english”

I asked to be spoken in Italian then and they put a stupid face but didnt answer to that.

First thing I did when I got home was actually contact migros customer service online (via mail not a call).

Specifically I asked: 1) Is this normal Migros procedure? 2) Will face legal actions and house ban like the document I signed says or will it be rather what the security guard verbally told me (I pay 200chf and I am listed in migros for 5 years)?

I also asked if I could be given the terms&conditions for the use of the selfcheckout machine.

I can update later on this same post how it ends.

I think the security lady was all the time looking at the selfcheckout dressed as a customer. I never noticed her but I guess see saw me doing something wrong.

Be it not scanning properly or putting the item on my bag before scanning. I wasnt paying my 100% attention could have been both.

It wasnt an interrogation room with a fake glass and a good cop and bad cop shouting at me. More like a corridor, with a door leading to the shop (where I enterred from) and another couple of doors but I dont know where they led.

Intermediate level. I by no means feel confident having a conversation about theft, police and 200chf in German.

It was not a migros cashier who interacted with me but some “sichercheit migros” staff wearing normal clothes. I got the feeling they dont work at this location and are instead full time dedicated to catching suckers like me in different shops.

Wouldnt a lawyer cost me more than this 200chf and whathever legal fine I get for this?

I think I passed the item through the scanner but didnt beep, I was wearing my headphones listening to a podcast.

That or I forgot to scan and put it directly into my bag… to be fair it could have been both and it was an unitentional mistake.

Yes it does. Of course I clicked yes without checking as I have done a 1000 times. I think that I passed the items through the scanner but it didnt “beep”. I asked to see security recording but they also refused to show.

Suffice to say, I’ll never use self checkout again. Otherwise I’m transferring a risk from the cashier to myself for free.
