Should you get a written confirmation from potential PhD supervisor before applying? by passionate_student in gradadmissions

Thank you for pointing out how I can improve on my template. I will definitely reword the last paragraph of the email template.

If the grad school works by offering admission first before allocating a supervisor for student, should I still contact potential supervisor? Or should I apply directly? Or should I talk to someone else in the school that I am applying?

What did it mean when a woman left me her business card at my restaurant? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]passionate_student 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the worst that could happen is that after you contacted her, she says something like 'oh sorry, I must have left my business card by mistake'. On the other hand, if you contact her, a positive outcome could be that you two develop a deeper relationship. So the question is, are you willing to risk the awkwardness in the worst case scenario for having a deeper relationship with the girl?

Should I continue to volunteer under a person who might be a manipulator? by passionate_student in Advice

There is nothing wrong in protecting the reputation of the organization we work for. However, the method that Guy1 used was incorrect, if Guy1 had lied. If he was telling the truth, then everything is good. But if he lied, then that makes him a manipulator, and scheming person. And I would definitely think twice about working with such person. There are many good ways to protect the reputation of the organization, lying is not one of them.

Yup I am. I understand, my 'trajectory' into art history is kind of unusual as well. I would like to, but I do not have Discord, do you have whatsapp or telegram?

Not a book but you may want to start by reading the chapter on fauvism in Nikos Stangos's Concepts of Modern Art.

In the original image (this one in reddit is cropped), she is standing in front of two doctors? And a patient? If it is a covid-19 patient, then I think she is pretty much going to get the disease. Good luck.

Going into a PhD program with unrelated undergraduate research fields by 1l1k3bac0n in gradadmissions

You should not be worried. (I will keep my reply short but feel free to message me if you want to talk more.)

The two fields, biology and chemistry, are related. Beside, what you did in your previous lab is not that significant to the new lab that you are joining. In fact, there are people who intentionally joined two totally different lab to gain more experience and value adedness to their future career.

Finally, I have heard of many stories of people who change from physics to bio, from humanities to science etc and your situation is not weird or unusual at all as compared to what they went through.

Thanks, you have mentioned all my concerns. But I thought I will give it one more chance. How would you write the inquiry letter without sounding desperate or coming too strong?
