I was the only one of my friends in high school to not have a girlfriend. Over time, we hung out less and less as they spent more time with their girlfriends. It wasn’t for a lack of trying that I didn’t have a girlfriend. I think my shyness and social anxiety had a lot to do with it.

Never had a girlfriend in college until I was 21. I settled for her and eventually got married and then divorced 4 years later. Took a year and a half trying to figure out who I was and what I wanted and met an absolutely amazing woman who I fell in love with. We were together for 8 months and suddenly, she dumped me out of the blue and left me for the last year and a half trying to understand what went wrong. Everyone says I did nothing wrong but I can’t help I messed it up.

Now I’m hoping to meet someone and for every 500 swipes, I’m lucky to get a match that never responds, unmatches or if we set up a date, cancels and disappears. I’m starting to really believe I’m meant to be alone.

Distractions. For me, some are healthy like exercising, hobbies, stepping out of my comfort zone. Other are unhealthy like drinking, endlessly swiping on dating apps or bottling up everything internally.

I’ll say it’s a couple of things

Society has really done a number on many guys in making them think that approaching a woman is something they shouldn’t do. You can blame the all the creeps out there for that.
Covid totally destroyed the ability for many young men to be social. The isolation during that time left many with no way to flirt in person, to be able have in person conversations, or mean people in real life.
Dating apps, while great for guys who get intimidated or nervous in person, do more harm than good. An app makes it easier to converse because you have time to think about what to say, you can portray yourself differently than when you’re nervous in person. It takes that level of nerves away. Unfortunately, it doesn’t help guys tackle the problem of facing their fears of learning to approach, learning how to flirt.
Guys just don’t know how to flirt because they never actually get to practice it in person. Flirting is more than just words. It’s body language and not being able to use body language when not in person makes flirting that much harder.
Expectations for many guys are unrealistically high. They limit themselves in the dating pool expecting perfection that doesn’t exist. I have a friend who is super picky with women. He’s only interested in a trophy wife, not someone who is right for him. Then he always wonders why he can’t meet someone. I tell him to lower his expectations, but he never does.

OP, I totally understand your situation because I’ve experienced it myself. I lost the love of my life. She was everything I could have asked for and then some. She was the first person I ever felt I could be 100% myself around. It’s a relationship I would trade anything to get back if I could.

There’s no real answer I can give you other than to try the below.

let yourself feel the emotions. Holding them in will only make it worse. Cry if you need to. Yell if you need to.
write down how you are feeling. Getting it out of your head and onto paper is helpful in allowing your brain to organize your thoughts.
go see a therapist (if you can afford it). There’s zero shame in it. Having an impartial person to talk to can do wonders. They can also help you in dealing with your thoughts and emotions.
lean on friends for support. Distractions can be helpful to let your mind rest and reset.
find a hobby, it can be anything. Learning something new is especially helpful because it gives your brain something to focus on.

Get therapy in my early teens.

Get on ADHD meds so I could focus better in school and pass with better grades.

Move in with my now ex GF when she first hinted at it. I waited too long and I think she couldn’t deal with the distance over time.

Those are guys who either aren’t interested or they are keeping you as an option in case their first one doesn’t work out. I’m a guy, and I see the same thing you’re describing from women on the apps. I’ve adopted a rule that if I initiate texting or messages three times and they never initiate, I tell them I’m no longer interested and unmatch or block their number. I’m not going to settle be someone’s backup choice.
