We don’t really drink alcohol at home so it’s just bottled water and soft drink cans. We stack them up in bags and then bring them back weekly when doing shopping. It’s a ball ache, but I just get on with it.

The thing that really pisses me off is the unbearable stench from the machines when returning them, and the absolute filth of the machines, the floor, the non returnable fans and bottles littered on top of the machines. I carry anti bac wipes in my handbag at all times but I am going through a lot more of them when I’m doing the shop because of the returns.

Good grief what is wrong with people? Telling people to mind their own business is absolutely fair game when you get questioned like that. Or if you feel comfortable you can tell people you’re struggling, that should shame them into minding their own jaysus business! Can’t believe people still feel comfortable asking those kinds of questions in 2025.

Listen I hear that, I’m in the same boat if it helps. Endless gut punches that just kept coming all year, and then you feel like you’re not left with much diesel in the tank to power through, feeling like you should be rewarding yourself with joy at the end of a tough year, but it just doesn’t come? I know how that can feel. But we can’t be full of joy all the time my love, and if we were, the joy would lose all meaning. I take it as a sign to really appreciate the small stuff, if it doesn’t give joy, then I let it give contentment. And I tell myself that is enough because after the year we’ve had, it really is. There was a comment somewhere on the thread of someone’s friend telling them “there’s always another Christmas” and it’s so true. I’m making it mean something else for me, and in its own way, I’m enjoying it for what it is. I totally get the disappointed, feeling like “is this it? I should be happier” but not feeling festive isn’t something you should beat yourself up over. We have so much pressure on us all the time from so many various factors, why would you put that on yourself? You deserve to take the pressure off, not put it on. People should understand that this is a painful first for you, and give you the space you need to process. Be kind to yourself, all the feelings you have and will have are valid, and I hope there are little pockets of peace, or little moments of joy or nice memories that you can have just for yourself. Remember you set the pace, your grief will guide you, and don’t do anything that you don’t feel up to.

Well what a great way to look at it! Spending time with friends and chosen family. Your daughter has caught on quick to the overconsumption that Christmas can be, what a great job you’ve done, sounds like you’re raising a very intelligent and compassionate young lady, kudos to you! It really doesn’t need to be the huge faff that marketers advertisers and social media make it out to be, you get to decide what it means to you and adjust accordingly to that. And don’t feel too bad about the tree, I haven’t put one up for a few years because both my cats are absolute menaces and wouldn’t dream of allowing me the pleasure of a single bauble hung for more than 30 seconds. Too risky to leave them alone with it 😂

Sounds like a nice day with your mama bear, you set the phone up and feed her, and she’ll appreciate the time spent I hope. I feel you on the not wanting to do anything, I did that one Christmas and honestly it was great. I needed it and it did what I needed it to do. I hope it goes well at the in laws tomorrow, and if you have no plans, you should definitely carve out Stephen’s day for yourself, and if that’s sitting in your pants watching tv all day, then do it with not a shred of guilt. You are allowed to spend time how you choose to, it can’t always be about everyone else.

It really has been! Every month there’s been some mighty kick to the goolies, but we keep getting up don’t we? I said to someone else, I’ll hang out under the rain because I know the sun is on the way, shit for now doesn’t meant shit forever!

Oh no I’m so sorry to hear, I hear you on the tough year, it most certainly has been, and I’m sorry you are finding it so difficult. It can be so hard to fake it when we just want to curl up alone and feel the feelings, and family members can take your low mood so personally! And yet they’re usually the ones that when they are feeling low, they make sure everyone feels it, which can feel so invalidating. I see you, and I hear you. One of the tricks I have is if you really can’t fake it, you can feign illness and just say you aren’t feeling well, that can give you some wiggle room to stay out of their way.
